These two different books Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde, and Mary Rielly were written in the years 1886 and 1890. They both tell a story about a man that is more or less two people. The biggest difference is the perspective in which it is told. These two books also written by two different authors. It was cool to be able to read Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde in a perspective of a friend, and then read Mary Rielly in the perspective of a maid. The Books Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde and Mary Rielly can be very similar at times but can also be very different in other aspects. In these two books the plot follows pretty well the same time sequence of events. For instance the part where Dr.jekyll quits having people over then has people over again after a while happens in both of the books. For example in Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde,”He came out of his seclusion, renewed relations with his friends, became once more their familiar guest and entertainer”(stevens 22). This quote goes to show that he had secluded himself and then at this point …show more content…
he comes back out of his shell and has people over again. The same thing happens with Dr.jekyll in Mary Reilly for example when Dr.Jekyll says,”I fear I shall spend a few days gazing at my footboard”,(Martin 104). This is when Dr.Jekyll secludes himself from the rest of them. In both the book Dr.jekyll gets deathly ill. In the book Mary Reilly you hear more of it though. For example in Mary Reilly Mary reilly says,”Dr.jekyll is so weak sounding and he can not even pick his head off of his pillow”,(Martin 106). In Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde He also gets very sick and stays in bed for a few days. This is shown when mr. utterson says,”Jekyll is ill...Have you seen him”,(stevenson 23). They go many days without seeing their friend. In both book sir.Danvers carew is murdered by Mr.Hyde. Mr.Hyde in both books is a shady character in both books as well. This is shown in Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde when the maid from the window. For example,”Mr.Hyde broke out of all bounds, and clubbed him to the earth”,(Stevens 15). This was from the maid watching this happen in the street. In Mary Reilly the murder of Sir.Danvers carew is shown by when Dr.Jekyll said that Mr.Hyde was gone for good he fled the country. Although in Mary Reilly It is very brief of this event it does happen in both books. There are many more differences between these two books than there are similarities. One of them happens to be that Mary Reilly is written in first person whereas Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde is in third person. In Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde mary reilly does not even exist. In Mary Reilly you get to know mary as an individual.”I was up before dawn and dressed by candlelight in our room”, (Martin 172). This just shows how dedicated mary is to her works when she is up before everyone else in the house and usually the last one to bed at night. In Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde the description of Mr.Hyde is very brief for example he is,”particularly small and particularly wicked”,(Stevens 15). In mary reilly the descriptions of Mr.Hyde as a character and his appearance are much more descriptive. As mary was entering thre library she witnessed Mr.Hyde and reconised,”He was well dressed, though plainly, and, as cook has said, he has a deal of dark, unruly hair which is in a longer fashion.”(Martin 145). This just goes to show how the book Mary Reilly is more descriptive than Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. In Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde you hear a lot about the murder of Sir.Danvers carew.
Where as in Mary Reilly you do hear briefly about the murder of Sir.Danvers carew, But you also hear about the murder of a prostitute. In Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde you do not hear of the murder of the prostitute. In Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde,”The ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot, and hailing down a storm of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jumped upon the roadway”, (Stevens 15). This is talking about the murder of Sir.Danvers carew in Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. In Mary Reilly,”I took this in without noting it, for all I saw was the twisted sheets and blankets on the bed, which was all soaked in blood, and the stains down the wall as of fingers dragged along, which had turned almost black on the dark on the paper but was surely blood”,(Martin 127). This is when mary goes to see Mrs.Farraday, and see’s the room where Mr.Hyde killed the
prostitute. In conclusion there are some similarities in this book, but there are many more differences. These books are both good books that tell a similar story, but from a different point of view. Dr.jekyll in both the books acts pretty similar. The fact of hearing it in the different point of views is pretty nice to get to know more about the characters. Having the two books being a little bit different makes it nice, so it's not so boring.
In both The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the 1941 movie adaptation, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, a strong representation of evil is present. Both the film and the novel are surrounded with sense of immorality and sin. The text and the film have economical and historical characteristics that help define evil. While the film alone has a strong representation of evil surrounding gender and relationships.
In the first chapter of the book we are introduced to one of the main
The character, Jekyll/Hyde, from The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by Robert Lewis Stevenson, and the characters Bartholomew and Thaddeus Sholto from A Study in Scarlet and Sign of Four, written by Sir Arthur Canon Doyle, exhibit dual-self characteristics. The Jekyll/Hyde and Sholto twin characters have many strong similarities as well as distinct but related differences. Interestingly, many of the areas of differences are ultimately the most vital aspects of the characters.
Essentially, the two men are complete opposites. Reputable and successful, Dr Jekyll was outlined “… [possessed] every mark of capacity and kindness” (Stevenson, 1978 pg. 14) . Paradoxically, Stevenson gave a man that hides from people the name Mr. Hyde. A couple examples of crimes which reflect his evil disposition include an incidence where he “trampled calmly over [a] child’s body and left her screaming on the ground,” (Stevenson, 1978 pg. 5) and his attack on Sir Danvers where “…with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot and hailing down a storm of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jumped upon the roadway.” I did not, however, outline the severity of criminal events in which Mr Hyde (or in case Dr Jekyll) had triggered, as it would be too unbefitting to include in the

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by Robert Louis Stevenson, follows the story of good versus evil. In this case, Dr. Henry Jekyll represents the good, with Mr. Hyde representing the evil. Religion is a main theme in this story.
The main characters in ‘Macbeth’ and ‘The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ are created in an identical way in the opening chapter and scene. They are being shown as loyal, dedicated and brave. Macbeth is surely dedicated to support his king whereas Dr Jekyll is faithful to science and shows his bravery by trying to help society as he believed he could get rid of evil.
wrong, a lot like the way Mr Hyde was thought of. So to Mr Utterson,
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are the same person all within the body of Dr Jekyll. He switches between the two willingly for science and his own personal desire. This can be proven in the last chapter of the book where we see
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde both suffer; however, one from illness and the other from insanity. Mr. Hyde is a sociopath, and lives in it to the full extent as well as Jekyll being a psychopath. However, Hyde was created the way he was to portray a sinful side of Jekyll, while Jekyll was himself throughout, good and bad, to manipulate and gain in the harm of
In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the author Robert Louis Stevenson uses Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to show the human duality. Everyone has a split personality, good and evil. Stevenson presents Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as two separate characters, instead of just one. Dr. Jekyll symbolizes the human composite of a person while Mr. Hyde symbolizes the absolute evil. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, who are indeed the same person, present good and evil throughout the novel.
Naturally, it is human nature to yearn for some sort of evil. Sinning is common on a daily basis. Kids lean towards destruction. Countless people have the urge to gamble at casinos. Human beings are lustful creatures and have sexual notions constantly in their minds. Evil is not something that can be avoided. For those who appear perfect, their "evil" is well hidden. Thus, ."..humanity is...synonymous with the struggle of good and evil" (Abbey, et al. 328). Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde centers on the dual nature of the human personality through the good and evil facets of Dr. Jekyll's character.
Making a decision based upon what is right, not only for yourself, but for everyone your associated with, is not easy. Many times the correct choice is the harder one, and it’s easiest to do the opposite of what society preaches. In both novels, The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde and Grendel, by Robert Louis Stevenson and John Gardner respectively, the main figures seem to conform to this ideology. The “characters” Grendel and Dr. Jeckyll (because they can’t yet be deemed as protagonist or antagonist) deal with dominant conflicts between society while simultaneously coping confusion within themselves. An antagonist, notoriously “the bad guy,” defines as the opposing force that brings conflict and is instrumental in the development
