hour New York. Hong Kong. The business and cultural centers in two of the world’s most powerful nations, they have influence in so many areas. Beyond their own borders, both cities and the nations they belong to, are connected to the lives of billions. They hold significant influence from business control to military power. A financial crash of New York or Hong Kong would be the demise of today’s world. The personas and authorities of the two cities are much like those of the United States and China. Many may think that because the two nations share comparable characteristics, they must be fairly alike. Those people would be tragically mistaken. Despite a few similarities, the United States and China are starkly different in most ways. “Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt, arguably one of the most influential U.S. presidents, illustrated the United States’ practice of democracy this way. Despite the communist rule that has oppressed the Chinese people over the last 66 years, the strength and value of Chinese cultural traditions are still in place. There are seven national holidays in China ranging in length from one day to an entire week. In the spring, Chinese New Year is celebrated. It is the largest and most widely known holiday in China. People fill the streets wearing red, the color of good luck, and shooting loud fireworks into the sky in celebration of their new year.
