The warrior ethics in Beowulf and The Tale of the Heike are similar and different at the same time. Their ethics are similar in ways that they wear their clothing. Their differences are that they fight different. Not everyone believes in the same things.
First, Beowulf and the people of The Tale of the Heike are similar in just about one ethic that I could find. Beowulf wears armor in all of his battles but one and that’s because he thinks he is strong just like Grendel. Beowulf also fights with weapons. “Handed him a hilted weapon, a rare and ancient sword named Hrunting” shows that weapons are his main source of defense and an ethic that makes him behave the way he does in fights (Beowulf line 1559-1560). His armor also makes him act the way he does because he thinks it won’t let him lose or die. In The Tale of the Heike they also wear armor and use weapons to protect and fight with. “The arrows whizzing” shows that the people of Heike use weapons and they feel more confident in winning if they have weapons and armor. Beowulf in his first fight comes to the town to save it. He defeats Grendel and then his mother comes for revenge. When Grendel’s mother comes Beowulf isn’t there so Beowulf has to go to her home. Beowulf isn’t afraid to fight anyone or anything. Then you go to the story of the Heike and you have the ones who run away from the fight. “So they plunged to the bottom of the thousand-fathom sea” the grandmother took the king away because she was afraid of fighting. So that is the most major difference between them. Beowulf isn’t afraid to fight with people to win a good reputation. Then you have the people of Heike who run away when something bad happens.
