The warrior ethics in Beowulf and The Tale of the Heike are similar and different at the same time. Their ethics are similar in ways that they wear their clothing. Their differences are that they fight different. Not everyone believes in the same things.
First, Beowulf and the people of The Tale of the Heike are similar in just about one ethic that I could find. Beowulf wears armor in all of his battles but one and that’s because he thinks he is strong just like Grendel. Beowulf also fights with weapons. “Handed him a hilted weapon, a rare and ancient sword named Hrunting” shows that weapons are his main source of defense and an ethic that makes him behave the way he does in fights (Beowulf line 1559-1560). His armor also makes him act the way he does because he thinks it won’t let him lose or die. In The Tale of the Heike they also wear armor and use weapons to protect and fight with. “The arrows whizzing” shows that the people of Heike use weapons and they feel more confident in winning if they have weapons and armor. So both Beowulf and the people of Heike are similar with wanting weapons and armory during their battles. They are also similar with the way they behave with

weapons and armory compared to not having weapons and armory. Next, Beowulf and the people of Heike have different ethics when it comes to fighting.
Beowulf in his first fight comes to the town to save it. He defeats Grendel and then his mother comes for revenge. When Grendel’s mother comes Beowulf isn’t there so Beowulf has to go to her home. Beowulf isn’t afraid to fight anyone or anything. Then you go to the story of the Heike and you have the ones who run away from the fight. “So they plunged to the bottom of the thousand-fathom sea” the grandmother took the king away because she was afraid of fighting. So that is the most major difference between them. Beowulf isn’t afraid to fight with people to win a good reputation. Then you have the people of Heike who run away when something bad happens. Being scared is an ethic they don’t have in
common. All in all, they are alike and different at the same time. There is a notable difference because one like to fight and the other runs from anything bad. These ethics are showing how their behavior effects them.
society. In Beowulf, Beowulf shows extraordinary courage and strength that gives him special status. This notion is shown, when Beowulf fights Grendel and Grendel’s mother, but it is especially noticeable when he fights the dragon. When Beowulf fought Grendel others had the courage to attempt to fight him. The same is true with Grendel’s mother. When Beowulf goes to fight the Dragon, the other warriors cower away into the woods. Beowulf shows his courage by fighting the Dragon. Even when Beowulf is fighting the Dragon and realizes that his sword can do no damage he continues to fight. After Beowulf is on the verge of death he shows a combination of courage and strength by delivering the death blow to the Dragon, and not just laying down to die. Beowulf’s strength is shown when he is able to actually do battle with the Dragon; any normal man would have fallen to the dragon immediately.
When deciphering between what it considered to be heroic or monstrous, it is important to keep in mind the angle in which a story is being told. While reading Beowulf, the protagonist of the epic poem could be considered either heroic or monstrous through the eyes of different characters. Beowulf can be classified as a hero according to The Hero’s Journey through the eyes of Hrothgar and Hygelac. On the other hand, Beowulf could be viewed as being monstrous according to Monster Theory through the eyes of Unferth and Grendel’s Mother.
What is hero? A hero, under the Merriam-Webster definition, is a person who is admired for brave/great acts or fine qualities. This is a very broad definition that combines both ancient and modern belief of what --or who-- a hero should be. Beowulf is an epic poem that focuses on an Anglo-Saxon hero. As such he embodies the traits that his culture valued most. Deadpool, on the other hand, portrays the most recent ideas of what traits a hero should embody. With these examples from contrasting periods, we are still able to see similarities and differences that shows how modern and Anglo-Saxon idea of heroism reflects its culture.
King Hrothgar had no solution to the conflict it was described that “All were endangered; young and old were hunted down by that dark death-shadow who lurked and swooped in the long nights on the misty moors” (Heaney 219). Grendel took over and established a kingdom. Grendel established a terrorizing fear in all the danes, until Beowulf comes along. Beowulf is immediately praised “There was no one else like him alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high-born and powerful”, the Danes after seven years have found how to defeat this monster. (Heaney 222) Beowulf travels to another country and is one of kind, no one compares to his might and power. This proves how brave he is to travel to another country to defeat a monster that has had repeatedly attacked Danes. Beowulf emphasizes his bravery even more by declaring ““I hereby renounce sword and the shelter of the broad shield, the heavy war-board: hand-to-hand is how it will be, a life-and-death fight with the fiend”. This boastful attitude gives Beowulf the bravery to step up and fight using his barehands. The average warrior would use a shield and sword but, Beowulf is not average he shows that he is a hero and will fight Grendel as if he was invincible. Beowulf defeats Grendel by ripping of his arm and it signifies that he is not a fraud, but a man of his word. Beowulf pride gives himself an
The third comparison is how the both get treated with a great deal of respect. Beowulf gets respected through out the lands of his time, and by his men whom are scare with out the help and support of Beowulf. The soldiers get treated with up most respect by people not just of our country, but people for across the world that they have helped out in hard times in their country.
For a hero Beowulf lacks a lot of morals and compassion. This is shown here
“In my youth I engaged in many wars”, Beowulf boasts to his warriors, which is certainly true. Throughout his life, he faces many deadly foes, all of which he handily defeats, save one. His story focuses on the most challenging, as well as morally significant of foes, Grendel and the dragon. These creatures reveal much about society as well as Christian virtue at the time. Even after Grendel and the dragon are defeated physically, the two monsters pose a new threat to the hero on a higher plane. Beowulf is not only at risk of losing his life, but his humanity, virtue, and even spirituality.
Erika Mercado Essay 2 Modern Heroes: Dante vs Beowulf A modern hero is a good-hearted person with these attributes: bravery, strong, and contributes to saving the lives of his homelands. Beowulf demonstrates the characteristics of a modern hero: a leader, fearless, and generous. Beowulf is a young hero whose character exerts powerful strength in battles. Dante the Pilgrim does not display hero attributes in The Inferno.
Another similarity of course is violence. Violence is obviously present in Beowulf’s world. The determinant of status holds its roots in violence. The only way for a warrior to prove himself is through battle, or violence. Specifically this can be seen through the character, Unferth. He was not respected as a warrior due to his inability to win battles. He tried to find faults in Beowulf to raise his own ego. The disrespect given to this man was due to his unsuccessfulness in violent engagements.
In the stories of Beowulf and A Knight's Tale, there are many different themes. One of the major themes is the religion that runs through both of them, yet both stories have a very different view of religion. In Beowulf, it seems as if God has chosen where our life will end and where it will begin, everything happens by the will of God in a fair and just way. In The Knight's Tale, we see Greek gods playing with the characters and when they "play" with them, there is no real pattern to how they choose things. Each vies is different and this affects the stories in different ways.
The men of the cross rode out to retrieve the holy land of Jerusalem, bearing arms and the power of our great Lord, Jesus Christ. Medieval Literature was able to further strengthen Christianity during its time as Medieval Literature explores the tales of those who follow Christianity and those who do not are mocked and/or portrayed as villains. For example, Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, and The Divine Comedy are all beloved works of arts that explore the idea of the effect of religion has on the masses or individuals. Christianity and the power of Christ played a monumental component of the Medieval era and is one of the overlapping themes of the Literature that was born from the era.
The second comparison would be of their codes of conduct. If you compare the two heroes' ethics, you see that they are different, too. Beowulf appears to have little morals that he lives by. His pride in himself and loyalty to his country are qualities of a hero, but there is not one line in which he shows inner strength from his heart - only his quest to put another 'notch in his belt.’ Sir Gawain never shows signs of arrogance, only selflessness, hon...
Beowulf is one of the oldest heroic poems that still exists. Likewise, it has been a theory for many that this poem has inspired authors and screenwriters alike in the creative process of fictional heroes for shows, movies, games, and books. Nonetheless, Beowulf 's trait of a modern-day superhero can be evaluated in almost every type of fictional hero that exists. For example, Beowulf is brave, even willing to die for the greater good, he is abnormally stronger than most humans which in a way makes him superior, and he is somewhat of a natural leader that everyone seems to admire. When comparing this character to other fictional characters, one that particular fits these same characteristics, and that person is Jon Snow. He plays cast in the popular television show, Game of Thrones. Jon Snow shares three fundamental characteristics of Beowulf such as, self-sacrificing for the common good, strength and abilities that are not seen in typical humans, and having natural leadership skills
The book Beowulf and its film adaptation were very similar. There were, however, several key differences that set them apart from each other. Overall, the book did a better job at portraying the tale of Beowulf because it includes more details and better emphasizes the struggles of Beowulf’s battles. For the most part, all the characters were the same, as well as their personalities. The film did include two characters the book did not mention, and these characters were quite important to the story. Another conflict between the two is that the argument between Unferth and Beowulf in Harot was not as intense in the movie as it was in the book. In the book, Unferth challenges Beowulf's reputation and inflicts a sense of distrust in Beowulf
Beowulf is a heroic epic that displays the heroic code of the Anglo- Saxon religion. The heroic code is made of 6 values, Courage, Loyalty, Kinship, Treasure, Hospitality, and Vengeance. Christopher Tolkien summarizes the code in his quote, “Physical courage (and shear strength of body), pride and a fierce individualism which would brook no humiliation, and the duty (and pleasure) of revenge, were the chief features of the man of honour.” Beowulf is a hero the same as Siegmund in that he shows his own individualism and displays the heroic code in all aspects.
