Similarities Between Animal Farm And The Russian Revolution

Animal Farm is an English novel written and published by George Orwell in August of 1947, that accurately reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917. In the novel, Orwell tells the story of Manor Farm and the overworked animals who live there, under the care of an alcoholic farmer, Mr. Jones. Orwell writes of animals who form a rebellion, then turn the farm into a system that very much mirrors that of a dictatorship.

The book opens up with the unhappy animals having a big meeting led by Old Major. The animals have seemingly lost faith in Mr. Jones’ ability to run the farm in way that allows the animals to work yet still lead happy lives. While the animals began to disobey the farmers orders and make lots of noise during the night, the Russians began to hold strikes through the streets and held protests. Nicholas who was not in Petrograd at the time, received reports of a rebellion but did not take them seriously. Eventually Nicholas II was forced to recognize the signs of a revolution and sent in troops in an attempt to control the crowds. At the time Russia had many soldiers but most were not properly trained or were injured. The small amount of soldiers they had were reluctant to move in on the crowd, since there were so many women involved. After being ordered to constrain the rioting crowds by force, many troops began to mutiny. As a result government authority in the capitol crumbled. By March 1st everyone in Russia knew Nicholas II was no longer the leader of Russia, except for Nicholas II himself. It was made obvious to him and official to the people of Russia when he was abdicated on March 2, 1917. Though the animals had been showing slight signs of rebellion, things become much worse for the farmer after he drunkenly forgets to feed the animals and is overthrown and chased off of the farm.
