The compromise of 1850 was very similar to the Missouri compromise of 1820 in that they both succeeded in bringing together the North and the South. In the early 18th century, there was division in America as result of slavery. At that particular point, the North and South were already in tension due to issue of slavery. Slavery was not widely spread in the North however, businessmen enriched themselves through slave trade in the south. Both Missouri Compromise and Compromise of 1850 both aimed at restoring peace between the North and South slave sated and between the Free and the Slave states. In 1819, America consisted of 22 states which were equally distributed among Free states and Slave states. Missouri requested to be declared a slave …show more content…
state however, making it a slave state would strike off the balance among Free states and Slave states. The Missouri demand would not stop and hence increased tension between Free and Slave states. In 1920, as an attempt to reduce tension and create peace, the National congress drafted an act that granted Missouri a slave state but providing that Maine was an anti-slave state. The congress also provided in the act the boundary through Louisiana which marked the boundary between slave states and Free states thus making it illegal for slave trade on the Northern boundary above 36° 36´except Missouri.(xxx) However, both South and North criticized the Bill for their own reasons. The south criticized the bill because they realized that the congress could make bills regarding slavery which could favor in the abolishment of slavery in America. The North on the other side saw a threat to expand slavery. However, the act managed to create peace between the North and South until 1854 when Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed in the constitution. The Act allowed Kansas and Nebraska to their own decision to allow or disallow slavery. This brought division since both were on the northern border of Louisiana. Later in 1923, the Missouri Compromise Act was declared unconstitutional on the basis that slavery and was done away with by the congress. Despite the Missouri Compromise efforts to unite the North and South, it was replaced by Kansa-Nebraska Act which fueled the civil war in 1861. Between 1846 and 1848, there was growing division between America and Mexico along the boundary on the states that had been acquired.
It was the growing war that led to Compromise of 1850 to establish peace just like the Missouri Compromise. The Compromise consisted of five bills providing different guides. One of the bills declared that California was an anti-slavery state and made it the 16th state to be Free from slavery. The second bill created two states namely New Mexico territory and Utah territory. The third bill abolished slave trade in Colombia where businessmen enriched themselves from slave trade but retained slavery in general. A fourth bill provided that Texas disown entitlement to New Mexico as well as North of Missouri. However, Texas would lose boundary claims but the congress agreed to take over its debt. A fifth bill provided that slaves should return to their owners hence favoring the South recover slaves that had escaped. Also, the North were required to return slaves who had escape back to their owners. Following various failed drafts by Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and John Calhoun, the bill was finally drafted by Senator Douglas which saw all the bills passed. The compromise established peace for a long time until the American Civil War aimed at abolishing
slavery.
Congress was put in a tough position when Missouri applied for statehood, for they couldn’t have an uneven number of states. If they didn’t have an even number, they would have to come up with another idea to make slave states and free states equal, such as adding a state or neutralizing an existing slave state. Instead of making one of the existing twenty-two states neutral to slavery they accepted Maine as free state. The acceptance of Maine as it’s own state did not occur until 1820, but the addition of it did even the amount of slave states and free states to twelve and twelve. The Missouri Compromise did not only ban slavery from Maine and allow s...
There are two mind paths to choose when considering the statement that the compromises of the 1800s were not really compromises, but sectional sellouts by the North, that continually gave in to the South's wishes. The first is that the compromises really were compromises, and the second is that the compromises were modes of the North selling out. Really, there is only one correct path between these two, and that is that the North sold out during these compromises and gave the South what it wanted for minimal returns. The three main compromises of the 19th century, the compromises of 1820 (Missouri) and 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 each were ways for the south to gain more power so that eventually, it could secede. First, the Missouri Compromise of 1820 established the slavery line that allowed slavery below it and forbid slavery above it.
The North always looked at the South with antipathy and kept trying to abolish slavery, but the South didn’t like the North interfering and wanted to continue the use of slavery. The Missouri compromise was another issue between the North and the South. Missouri was a territory state, and it opted to be in the Union in 1818. There was a proposal to ban Slavery in Missouri, even though there were more than 2000 slaves living there, in desperation, Missouri asked for help from the South. Maine was another territory that had petitioned to enter the union, so in 1820 a compromise was set and Missouri was allowed to stay a slave state, and Maine was declared a free state.
Politically, there were questions about the amount power given to the federal government vs the states; as question since the adoption of the Constitution. At times states felt the need to question the power federal government. For example in the Decision of McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) confirmed that no state could tax federal property, enforcing the supremacy clause (Document D). While this reinforced a nationalist point of view that challenge was clearly sectionalist in nature. Efforts to diffuse political rivalries were also present. An example was the request for Missouri statehood in late 1819 who was also requesting that slavery be permitted. To diffuse the sectionalist debate the Missouri Compromise was placed by congress. At the time the U.S. contained 22 states, evenly divided between slave and free. (Page 155).... (QUOTE BY JEFFERSON) A sectionalism standpoint was also depicted in the presidential election of 1824 where each state differed in voting for the men running for the same position (Document
Missouri was a slave state, while Maine was a free state. This shows sectionalism as this thought on slavery distinctly separates the nation into Southern beliefs and Northern beliefs. This compromise shows the gap between the north and south. It has led to many devastating losses throughout history, yet on the other side it has “resolved” conflict when the conflict was too troublesome to talk through.
The north made a compromise which was a wrong decision and was the start to something worse that was what to come. Also the corruption of the government in the north caused the reconstruction to fall apart. (Background Essay paragraph 1) “1876 was an exciting year for America” “So it is great irony of history that the election of 1876 officially crushed the american dream.” The Compromise of 1877 was a compromise that gave both sides what they assumed they wanted. (Background Essay, Paragraph 4) The Compromise was introduced because of the presidential election. The north wanted there president and the south wanted theirs. The Republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes against the Democratic Candidate Samuel J. Tilden. So the north wanted to make a compromise and they wanted to give the north and the south what they wanted. The north got their president and the south got the union troops out of the south. (Background Essay Paragraph 5) When Hayes took union troops from the south he was ending the

In 1819, Missouri wanted to join the Union, although in the North, as a slave state. In would make the balance of power in the Congress unequal.
Before the mid 1800s, the north and south dealt with a lot of disagreements that involved economic differences. The differences dealt with slavery, representation, states’ rights, and tariffs. There was a conflict with states wanting to balance the freedom of slaves in the states. Another cause was the tariffs which dealt with the taxation of imported goods, the Northern states supported protective tariffs, but the South did not. Consequently, the conflicts began to grow and this increased the differences between the North and South. During the early to mid 1800s sectional differences forced the north and south farther and farther apart. The differences that affected the North and South involved the missouri compromise of 1820, the cotton gin invention, and the Uncle Tom’s novel.
Another advantage of the Compromise of 1850 to the south was that the rest of the Mexican Cession territory was to be divided into the two territories of Utah, and New Mexico. It was also said that when these territories eventually applied for statehood, the people of the new states would decide for themselves if they were to be free states or slave states. This was good for the south because it made it possible for the new territory to eventually become slave states, and that would not be possible if the 36-30 line was extended westward. The compromise also said nothing prohibiting people from bringing their slaves to the territory in the meantime.
The new territories and the discussion of whether they would be admitted to the Union free or slave-holding stirred up animosity. The Compromise of 1850 which offered stricter fugitive slave laws, admitted California as a free state, allowed slavery in Washington D.C., and allowed new territories to choose whether they wanted to be slave-holding or free was supposed to help ease tension between the North and South. Yet Southern states wanted more new territories to be slave-holders so the institution of it would continue to grow. They believed slavery was a way of life and as Larrabee said in his senate speech, “You cannot break apart this organization and this system that has intertwined itself into every social and political fiber of that great people who inhabit one-half of the Union.” (“There is a Conflict of Races”).
The Compromise of 1850 brought relative calm to the nation. Though most blacks and abolitionists strongly opposed the Compromise, the majority of Americans embraced it, believing that it offered a final, workable solution to the slavery question. Most importantly, it saved the Union from the terrible split that many had feared. People were all too ready to leave the slavery controversy behind them and move on. But the feeling of relief that spread throughout the country would prove to be the calm before the storm.
In 1817, the Missouri Territory Assembly applied for statehood. Missouri was slated to be the first state, other than Louisiana, to be created from the purchase. Considering there were slaves already in Missouri territory, it was clear that Missouri was going to enter the Union as a slave state and have implications on the rest of the new territory from the Louisiana Purchase unless Congress opposed it (America Past and Present). Fear began to rise due to the unbalance of free and slave states. Fortunately, the Maine territory was separated from Massachusetts and requested statehood.
The South did not want to lose slavery and wanted future territories to have slavery. Compromise is impossible to achieve. Going back to the quote, "The 1850's was a time of attempted compromise when compromise was no longer possible. " During the 1850's compromise was attempted by both the North and South and failed. It failed because both sides wanted different things, and this made compromise impossible.
After winning the Mexican-American War in 1848, the United States gained the western territories, which included modern-day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, as well as parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma. However, controversial topics, that helped cause the Civil War, arouse with the addition of these new territories. Primarily, the people of the United States wanted to know whether the new territories would be admitted as free states or slave states. In order to avoid fighting between the slave states of the South and the free states of the North, Henry Clay (Whig) and Stephen Douglas (Democrat) drafted the Compromise of 1850. Although the compromise was created to stop conflict ...
