The two short stories of “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Black cat” by acclaimed author Edgar Allen Poe are a great example of what exemplifies the darkness a person can succumb to in certain situations. Both of these marvels share important realizations of thought and subconscious guilt’s to which are used as an example of how two different people in two different situations can have the same outcome in the way of committing murder. Meaning that insanity is a key role and in this story as well. The guilt caused him grief and in an insane way hangs the cat from the tree. But as a result of this, later he acquires a different cat with similar traits which in time and alcohol made him insane as it reminded him too much of the pain he caused the original cat. With the guilt of what he had done, he grew extremely violent thus eventually attempted to kill the second cat, but while in such a furious state he murders his wife in the process. This is where both tales share a great similarity because both become the cause of death of two innocents. Both characters decide to hide the bodies of their victims to escape all consequences. In “The Tell Tale heart” the protagonist hid the body under the floorboard and in “The black cat” the man hid his wife’s corpse inside a wall. As the stories progressed, the police arrive to investigate and share the similarity in which both characters paranoia awakens. In “The Tell Tale Heart” the character makes his murder known to the police after he claimed to hear a heartbeat coming from the dead corpse and couldn’t bear the noise believing the police were aware of his crime. In “The Black Cat” the character does something similar when he hears a noise and the police discover what he had done as well. The cat was inside the wall where the corpse sat the whole time. “Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Monkey’s Paw,” share the same qualities in plot and settings. Both dark tales are obviously, dark, cold, and mysterious. The fact that they both take place in a more primitive era makes the story more suspenseful, because refuge is far away. In both of these stories, the characters suffer the consequences of making a rash decision that, in some way, involve death. The characters regret their decisions, but there is no turning back. When reading any of Edgar Allen Poe’s works, the reader can almost expect a reoccurring theme that focuses on the questionable sanity of the narrator and the overwhelming presence of death that drives the story to its resolve. The two stories being compared are no exception to this theme as both are built upon the thought driven narrative of a seemingly mad man with a fervor for revenge. In both stories the reader is told of the main character, “The Cask of Amontillado” gives us Montresor and “The Tell-Tale Heart” is simply the narrator of the story, who seek out a character to murder for vague reasons not fully explained to the reader in a way that builds a picture of the way their mind works. As both dictate how and why they plan to commit their crimes, the inner monologue that is provided by a first person narrative paints a picture of the unstable emotional state and irrational thought process that gives the reader insight to how unreliable their account of the story actually is. This unreliable narrative leaves the story open to interpretation on whether or not the act of murder was committed righteously, or simply just the misguided actions of two insane characters.

Poe knew how the get a reader deep into the story; he could make them believe as thought they went through the deeds with the character. The two short stories that I have chosen by Edgar Allan Poe are The Tell Tale Heart and The Black Cat. These two stories in particular have many things in common as far as technique goes, but they do have some significant differences between the two.
