The history of our world have many events that have shaped the way people think and have affected our lives still yet today. The Italian Renaissance was an important time during world history. Along with the Italian Renaissance, the Northern Renaissance in Europe was also a vital part of the past. There are similarities and differences between both the Northern European and Italian Renaissance that help in understanding their history. The way they started, the secular views, and the advancements are among some of the similarities and differences between the two time periods.
To begin, the way in which the Renaissance started in both areas is a difference between each. At the beginning of the Italian Renaissance, the Medici family was the
The European Renaissance occurring from 1450 to 1650, marked a change that led to many developments in art, religion, literature and the economy. The impact of the Renaissance changed the thinking and life. The society saw a rise in creativity, in ambition and in politics. During the Renaissance (the rebirth) achievement in art especially rose, though depending on where the Renaissance was, it was a different experience all around. Renaissance art in Italy and southern Europe had more of a grecian theme, while northern Renaissance focused more on life and mythology.
During the 15th century, as the Renaissance flourished in Italy, a separate movement of the Renaissance emerged in the Netherlands. The Netherlands, located north of Italy, independently developed a distinct artistic style that incorporated Gothic influences and emphasized observation of nature, symbolism, and attention to detail. Both Flemish and Italian artists were focused on accurately depicting physical realism through the use of chiaroscuro and linear perspective. However, some Italian artists such as Fra Angelico focused on spiritual message rather than naturalism. Each regions’ styles also often vary in materials and theme. For example, Flemish paintings integrated religious themes into secular settings. This was the result of wealthy patrons and merchants commissioning a broader expanse of subjects in Northern art. Italian Renaissance art, however, was predominantly religious. Giant altarpieces were created mainly for public display in churches and
Due to the Renaissance, European society changed politically, economically, and socially between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The word Renaissance means “rebirth,” signifying a whole new Europe. Humanism, crossroads, and monopoly in Italy were important characteristics of the Renaissance.
The baroque and renaissance periods are two different periods. The renaissance period rolled into the baroque era. There were changes made over the years from the baroque to the renaissance period. Differences in style accumulated along with views of art and music.
The shift between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance was characterized by great socio-economic, political, and religious changes. Politically, the feudal system of the Middle Ages was exchanged for a more stable centralized republic/monarchy system that gave the people more freedom and input. Religiously, secularism became more important as stability gave people a chance to concern themselves with the “here and now” rather than simply the “hereafter.” Socially, there was a shift from dogma and unshakeable belief to humanism and the ability to interpret things for oneself. The Middle Ages began around 400 CE and lasted until 1400 CE while the Renaissance began around 1200 and continued until 1600. The 200 years that overlap between these two periods contain many pieces of “transition” art in which it is obvious that the change is beginning to take place. These collective changes that took place in this period dictated change in art as well. There were changes in iconography, style, purpose, and patronage that facilitated the overall transformation of art from a sense of illustrating what you are told to believe is true to optical realism and conveying how you yourself interpret that “truth”.
The Italian Renaissance brought a new and stimulating attitude to the table, with the concept of modern and ancient times combining through art and architecture and a society that wasn’t theological or scientific but centered on civics, posing questions about how humans ought to be or do. Renaissance Italy had been divided since the fall of Rome and with the different city-states governed by a wide variety of governments politics was extremely weak during that time. Niccolo Machiavelli wrote one of the most important documents in Renaissance Italy and history in general, The Prince, which dictated how leaders acted around him and could be interpreted as a guide to how the leaders should be acting. This document would be used as a blueprint for the unification of Italy but also proved to be of use to modern politicians when applied to the world we see today. The political weaknesses in Renaissance Italy were
There are many differences in theatricality between the Catholic Baroque in Italy and the Protestant Baroque in Northern Europe. To illustrate this statement two artworks will be examined. One form the Catholic Baroque in Italy and one form the Protestant Baroque in Northern Europe. The painting that will be used to illustrate the differences for the Catholic Baroque Era is Caravaggio’s The Crucifixion of Saint Peter. This is a painting that was finished in 1601 and portrays Saint Peter being nailed to a cross. Not only does the actual painted image differ from paintings of the Protestant Baroques in Northern Europe, but also by how it was painted and the thoughts behind it. To understand and compare the differences for the Protestant
The renaissance and the reformation were two of the most significant changes in history that has shaped our world today. If you examined both the renaissance and the reformation there were many differences and similarities from both. One of the main contrasts was that the reformation was all about the way to reform the church, and the renaissance had a much more secular view. Some of the similarities were that they both were about accepting new ideas whether artistic or religious, and they both had leaders who were corrupt. There were many changes that came about during these times and I believe that our world today would be completely different without them.
During the 1400s, a whirlwind of cultural, political, and religious ideas swept across Europe. It would lay the groundwork for the Reformation in Northern Europe and redefine the way that artists and intellectuals were seen in Italy. This movement is commonly called “The Renaissance” but the Renaissance that took place in Italy was arguably different from the Northern Renaissance. The Northern Renaissance took place in France, the Low Countries, Germany and England. Due to the different types of changes taking place, the two types of humanism emerging from these areas were distinctly different. Yet they focused on some of the same things as well; such as education and rediscovering old works of literature. The main differences between

One of the ways that the Middle Ages time period differed from the Renaissance is the way that the people are portrayed. In the Middle Ages, idealism was defined as how a person should be, not how they are. Similar to the Middle Ages, the figures in the Renaissance look like they have no
The Renaissance period started in Italy and took place between the 1400’s and the 1600’s. In French, the term Renaissance means rebirth, which is an accurate way to describe that period since it was then that many people chose to break away from the stagnation, incertitude, and extreme hardships that occurred during the Middle Ages and plagued most of Europe. The Renaissance period is noted for being a time when the population sought educational reform which increased literacy and many were able to master more than one skill set. This led to an intellectual, economic, and artistic revolution that transformed several European nations such as Italy, France, Spain, and several others. During this time, there were several developments within the Catholic Church, such as scandals and controversy. Because of that, many people were driven away from the traditions of the church and sought more freedom of expression and individualism. As economies improved, there was more wealth and a desire for self improvement which greatly influenced the arts.
The geography of Italy had a huge impact on the beginning of the Renaissance. Italy was
After Europe passed through the disastrous ‘age of darkness’, there were complete changes of methods and social conditions. These revolutionary changes happened between the 14th and the 16th century, and signaled the beginning of the ‘Modern Age’ of Europe. This significant revolution, known as ‘The Renaissance’, was begun in Florence, Northern Italy, because Italy was located in a geographically strategic location, where the center of trade existed. Since there were a great number of merchants and people from other continents passing through the Mediterranean, Italy started to become a place where people shared their ideas without being prejudiced. However, the Renaissance in fact, also brought a lot of substitutions, which first covered all of Italy and brought Europe to the beginning of the Golden Age. These changes occurred in the economy and lifestyle, in the attitude to learning and knowledge, and in the conditions for the Arts.
