'Silly Old Bear!'; Almost every child and adult has heard this phrase before which comes from the Winne the Pooh series written by A.A. Milne. In this series of books written about Winnie the Pooh, the 'silly old bear,'; his friends, and their adventures together in the Hundred Acre Wood Forest, Milne captures the 'incomparably and enduringly, the frolic and indolence, the sweetness and foolishness, of animals which are also people(Discovering Authors).'; Many critics and people agree that Pooh is simply an ignorant little bear who is only interested in self-indulgence and is literally a 'silly old bear.'; This statement, however, is not true. Through the use of his characters in the Winnie the Pooh stories, Milne is able to present both the good and bad qualities of people that make up the Chinese philosophy of Taoism. One may even say the Pooh is a master of Taoism.
Born a Scotsman, Alan Alexander Milne spent most of his childhood in London where he grew up to be one of the most well known British authors of his time(Dennis). Today Milne is praised for his 'accurate and sympathetic observations of child behavior, his wit, and his skill with language, especially wordplay and dialogue'; which are easily recognizable in his famous Winnie the Pooh stories(Discovering Authors). Although people today regard Milne's stories as children's stories, Milne did not intend them for children, but rather for the child within every person(Dennis). As Barbara Novak puts it, Milne's work 'captures the gaiety of a child's mind and suggests a positive attitude to life and a fresh appreciation of the smallest things(Novak).'; Not only does Milne show the positive attitudes of people, but he also shows the negative attitudes and characteristics of people which, combined, come to make up the philosophy of Taoism.
What is Taoism? Taoism is and ancient Chinese philosophy that began during the 300's B.C. The word tao originally meant way or road. The general idea behind Taoism is that reality consists of all the individual ways and that the characteristics and behaviors of each thing in the universe make it what it is(World Book 26). In terms of Pooh and his friends, the concern of Taoism is a particular way of appreciating, learning from, and working with whatever happens in everyday life. If one has mastered these simp...

Taoist immortals have been traditionally known for their young attitudes, appearances, and energies(Hoff 109). It is not the adult that achieves the highest level of development. It is the 'clear-minded, all seeing Child. The wise are Children Who Know. Their minds have been emptied of the countless minute somethings of small learning, and filled with the wisdom of the Great Nothing, the Way of the Universe.(Hoff 151).'; Pooh has been called the bear with little brain, but this is not a bad thing. Taoists believe that the brain can often send people off in the wrong direction. A brain can do all sorts of things, but the things that it can do are usually not the most important things. The masters of Taoism, like Pooh himself, listen to the voices within themselves, the voices of simple-mindedness and wisdom. These voices go beyond knowledge(Hoff 154). Pooh may be a simple-minded, childish bear, but his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood Forest have demonstrated that knowledge and cleverness can often lead to no accomplishment. All people possess an Owl, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, and Rabbit within themselves, but it is the 'Silly Old Bear'; that they must choose to follow.
Philosophy is a complicated subject. Since the beginning of human existence, many tried to come up with theories about life, happiness, reality and knowledge. From philosophical ideas different beliefs sprung, and existence of different religions followed. Every theory raised by a philosopher attracted different followers. In today's modern society aside from major religions, there are thousands of others that suggest that their explanations to universal questions are the only accurate ones, and all of these religions seek to gain more followers to join their "way". One of these religions is the religion/philosophy of Taoism. Taoism has it roots in China, where the founder of Taoism Lao-Tse was searching for a way that would avoid the constant feudal warfare and other conflicts that disrupted his society during his lifetime. The result was his book: Tao-te-Ching. Lao-Tse described Taoism as a path or a way which one must follow in order to reach inner serenity and peace. In order to reach these inner goals one must live in harmony with nature and natural process that creates the balance in the universe.
After a four week survey of a multitude of children’s book authors and illustrators, and learning to analyze their works and the methods used to make them effective literary pieces for children, it is certainly appropriate to apply these new skills to evaluate a single author’s works. Specifically, this paper focuses on the life and works of Ezra Jack Keats, a writer and illustrator of books for children who single handedly expanded the point of view of the genre to include the experiences of multicultural children with his Caldecott Award winning book “Snowy Day.” The creation of Peter as a character is ground breaking in and of itself, but after reading the text the reader is driven to wonder why “Peter” was created. Was he a vehicle for political commentary as some might suggest or was he simply another “childhood” that had; until that time, been ignored? If so, what inspired him to move in this direction?
In one of the scenes, Rabbit is trying to help Pooh out by trying to get him unstuck from the hole. Rabbit tries to push Pooh out of the hole first, after Pooh has eaten a lot of honey. Then, she tries not to look at it, but she sees his butt in the mirror. Next, Rabbit tries to decorate Pooh's butt with different items, but that does not seem to work either. Finally, one day Pooh moves a little, and Rabbit pushes him out hard and then Pooh goes flying through the air into a tree with bees and more honey. Another scene is where Rue gives Pooh a bouquet of flowers to cheer him up while he is in the hole. Pooh then feels a lot better about being stuck in the hole after Rue gave him the beautiful
The basic philosopy of Tao Te Ching was that of living in harmony with the basic force behind nature (Religions of the World page 181). Tao Te Ching split into to different groups; one group was those who followed the teachings of Lao-tzu and Chuang-Tzu. The other group was focused on the extension of life, not through reincarnation, but extension of present life. Through the process of seeking the extension of life, Taoist found their first god, and more and more gods began to develop. Soon Tao Te Ching was official validated and recognized as a scripture. The influence of Tao Te Ching spread and became the religion of the masses to the Chinese people. Through influence with Buddhism Taoism evolved and began to merge with other religions. A battle between Buddhist and Taoist broke out, and it was a battle of influence, which eventually led to persecution. Each groups teachings change until both where mixed with Confucius teachings, and each became more accepting of every...
...ccording to it. It is the level of understanding and respect a Taoist has with nature, everyone around them, and everything. This mystery is the last feature that is important to defining a religion.
In 1910, “after reading Norman Angell's book The Great Illusion, Alan committed himself to pacifism, a cause that he served the rest of his life” (Wheeler). Even before this, Milne’s personality tended to lean in this direction; as exhibited in his childhood, a fundamental characteristic of Milne’s was his hatred of violence and aggression. He also had a strong sense of Puritanism, “partly natural, partly imposed by his Victorian upbringing” (Wheeler). These tendencies affected all of his writing, including the Pooh books, for many of his works carry light-hearted and innocent sense, but also an overwhelming sense of moral justice.
Although The Tale of Peter Rabbit is not a ‘modern’ picturebook, and was written to a different concept of childhood than Voices in the Park, it certainly falls within Bader’s description. Susan Hill has described the events of the book as reflecting ‘the world of the Victorian nursery… Naughtiness may be understood...
In its second sense, Tao means "the way of the universe." Tao is something that goes through all beings, all of the earth. It is everywhere, all the time. It is something that flows through everything. This flowing idea links with the idea in Buddhism that Nirvana can be reached by anyone, as long as one is devoted enough and has lost all attachments.Thirdly, one life must be a certain way to work with the Tao: Tao also refers to "the way of human life" as it "meshes" with the universal Tao in its second sense.
In the book Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu employs different ways to explain what “Tao” is to people. He uses different techniques—using simplicity, nature, metaphor, and comparison—to affect people’s mind so that they would rethink and relearn the things in their daily life. As a consequence, people can understand well the main concept—“Tao.” Overall, Lao Tzu wants to express the importance
A brief history of Taoism is required in order for us to pursue these goals. To begin with, Taoism originated from a man named Lao Tzu. He wanted to deeply come to an understanding of how one could induce human beings to live together. Tradition says that he developed such a theory but there was no one around to listen to him. In turn, he hopped on his water buffalo and rode to Tibet. When he arrived, he found a border guard and Lao Tzu taught the guard his philosophy. The guard agreed with all Lao Tzu stated and he encouraged Lao Tzu to write his teachings down.
Tao is translated as “the way” There are many different meanings to Tao. Tao describes ultimate reality, explains the power that drives the universe and the wonder of the human nature. In Taoism they believe that everything is one despite all the appearances. Opinions of good and evil or true and false only happen when people forget that they are all one in the Tao. Overtime Taoism evolved. Religious Taoism worshiped many gods and ancestors. In 440 C.E after being adopted by China Taoism became popular and continues to be practiced even to this present
Although an extremely successful playwright author, talented poem author, and a superb novelist in his early years of writing, A. A. Milne is known around the world because of his highly treasured children’s book series, Winnie-the-Pooh. Milne’s love for writing and words started at a young age, but he didn’t pursue this career path until after graduating from Cambridge with a degree in mathematics according to S. Ward (9). Milne was able to relate to the young readers of his children’s books, as well as give a sort of distinguished outlook with the parents and adult readers. Alan ventured far beyond children’s literature, unwilling to stay with one type of writing for too long of a period of time. Because Alan Alexander Milne attempted many contrasting types of work, he showed to be skillful in writing a wide variety of compositions.
Taoism is “philosophical system developed by Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu advocating a simple honest life and noninterference with the course of natural events”
As a result, an audience may realize that it is Taoism what keeps all of Ang Lee’s films connected. Taoism is Ang Lee’s not-so-obvious fingerprint. By using the Taoism belief in different aspects of the film like the camera, the composition, the art direction etc., audiences have freedom in the world his film created to choose the way they perceive the most authenticity about the character and the world the character is in.
The idea of Taoism was originally presented by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu. His beliefs and views on this philosophical system were stated in Tao te Ching, which in English is interpreted as ‘The Classic book on the way of Virtue’. The book, which has very little known about its roots and creation, talks about what effect behaviours can have on an individual’s life, and how to prevent these behaviours from having negative consequences. For many people in the modern day, the Tao te Ching provides an insight into ‘the art of living’ and how to live in a world of peace and joy. I agree with his philosophy that he presents in his book, in that people living the natural way and not forcing outcomes of life and situations leads to a better sense
