The 1920s was an era of profound cultural conflicts. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, a wave of Italians migrated to America in search of better economic opportunities. In New York City alone, the Italian population grew from 20,000 in 1880 to a substantial 500,000 by 1910, which accounted for 10% of New York City’s population (Mafia in the United States). After the Prohibition, many Italian’s joined together to form the Mafia: an Italian-American crime organization that ruled the underground liquor trade. With members like Al Capone and John Gotti, the Mafia became a well-known and well-feared people among the public. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, reveals traces of the Mafia and their illegal business in the backdrop of the novel through the main character himself. A man desperate for money, Gatsby resorts to bootlegging to acquire his wealth, which gets him involved with suspicious characters, such as Meyer Wolsheim. Fitzgerald’s purpose for the creation of the character Meyer Wolfsheim was to epitomize the grim reality of the American Dream, a subject almost completely averted within the novel, which therefore allowed for the death of Gatsby, the figure of dreaming and reaching for the unattainable, by it’s harsh truth. Before 1931, the phrase “American Dream” did not exist (Churchwell 344) the way it does now. But in that year, James Truslow Adams wrote a book called The Epic of America, which declared that “the American dream of a better, richer, happier life for all of our citizens of every rank, which is the greatest contribution we have made to the thought and welfare of the world...Ever since we became an independent nation, each generation has seen an uprising of ordinary Americans to s... ... middle of paper ... ... The Great Gatsby is an American novel of hope and longing, and is one of the very few novels in which “American history finds its figurative form (Churchwell 292).” Gatsby’s “greatness” involves his idealism and optimism for the world, making him a dreamer of sorts. Yet, although the foreground of Fitzgerald’s novel is packed with the sophisticated lives of the rich and the vibrant colors of the Jazz Age, the background consists of the Meyer Wolfsheims, the Rosy Rosenthals, the Al Capones, and others in the vicious hunt for money and the easy life. Both worlds share the universal desire for the right “business gonnegtion,” and where the two worlds meet at the borders, these “gonnegtions” are continually negotiated and followed (James E. Miller). Gatsby was a character meant to fall at the hands of the man meant to be a reality check to the disillusions of the era.
