** (Grabber) The novel The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald embodies many themes; however the most significant one relates to the corruption of the American dream. The American Dream is defined as someone starting low on the economic or social level, and working hard towards prosperity and or wealth and fame. By having money, a car, a big house, nice clothes and a happy family symbolizes the American dream. This dream also represents that people, no matter who he or she is, can become successful in life through his or her own hard work. The desire to strive for what one wants can be accomplished if they work hard enough. The Great Gatsby is a novel that shows what happened to the American Dream in the 1920’s, which is a time period when the It becomes evident that this green light is not Daisy, but a symbol representing Gatsby’s dream of having Daisy. The fact that Daisy falls short of Gatsby’s expectations is obvious. Knowing this, one can see that no matter how hard Gatsby tries to live his fantasy, he will never be able to achieve it. Through close examination of the green light, one may learn that the force that empowers Gatsby to follow his lifelong aspiration is that of the American Dream. Fitzgerald uses the green light as a symbol of hope, money, and jealousy. Gatsby looks up to the American dream and follows it so he can be the picture perfect man that every girl desires. Gatsby cares a lot about how people see him, and his appearance towards others. He wants everything to look perfect for Daisy, as he wants Daisy to view him as a perfect man. “We both look at the grass – there was a sharp line where my ragged lawn ended and the darker, well-kept expanse of his began. I suspected he meant my grass.” (Fitzgerald, 82) This presents the theme of appearance vs. reality and how Gatsby wants everything to look nice and presentable for when he meets up with Daisy for the first time in five years. Gatsby becomes corrupted because his main goal is to have Daisy. He needs to have an enormous mansion so he could feel confident enough to try and get Daisy. Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald criticizes the American dream very elaborately and shows the idea of the American dream to be connected with the goal of achieving wealth. Fitzgerald does not praise wealth in the Great Gatsby but condemns it by drawing attention to the dreadful fall made by Gatsby. Fitzgerald finds the desire of wealth to be a corrupting impact on people. Throughout the novel, the characters with money contradict the idea of the American dream. They are portrayed to be very snobbish and unhappy people. The American dream in the novel is shown to be unachievable. The American Dream is the concept that anyone, no matter who he or she is, can become successful in his or her life through perseverance and hard work. During the course of the novel, Gatsby’s dream is revealed to be delusional and unrealizable, so the symbolic meaning behind the green light collapses. Finally, as Gatsby’s dream is dashed, the green light stops being something that is his alone, and is a torch passed to us instead standing for the unreachable dream of an “orgastic future” that is constantly getting farther and farther away and that we keep trying to grab for. Though success lies at the heart of the American dream, Fitzgerald deftly portrays the ease with which this sacred idea can become tainted by commenting on the corruption of wealth. Gatsby exemplifies the American dream in his ideals, in this case the desire for success and self-substantiation; however, this dream become corrupted because he is not able to distinguish the acquisition of wealth from the pursuit of his dream, embodied by Daisy, and is tainted by the illicit foundations of his wealth as well as his desires for an unsuitable married woman. Fitzgerald uses the symbol of the green light at the beginning of the novel to represent Gatsby’s dream and even uses the light to introduce him for the first time. “He [Gatsby] stretched his arms out towards the dark water in a curious way, and as far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward- and distinguished nothing but a single green light, minute and far away”(Fitzgerald 26). However, his dream was still symbolized in the green light at the other end of the dock at the Buchanans’ residence in East Egg that he stretched out his arm towards “with his extraordinary gift of hope.”. Towards the end of the book, the narrator, Nick says “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. ”(Fitzgerald 180). The light symbolized his hopes and dreams for his future which he associated with Daisy. He viewed it as a guiding light that would help him achieve his goal of getting together with Daisy.
After the occurrence of World War I, the United States returned to its former self. A land full of financial and social opportunities for those willing to work hard, the American Dream. For many this was difficult. Striving and working towards this dream corrupted them. Many obtained their riches under the influence of pleasure. Fitzgerald’s characters in the Great Gatsby enjoy their lives in the 1920s presenting the void that results when pleasure and wealth become the ends in the people themselves. Especially, the hollow lives of Jay Gatsby, George Wilson, and Daisy Buchanan reflect that chasing empty dreams lead only to misery.
