To a partial extent I believe that the widespread recognition of the importance of learning English is a result of linguistic imperialism. Kachru’s circle shows English as an expanding international language. It is natural from those expanding countries to naturally want to learn English from the inner circles where the language has originated or is mostly spoken from. It creates a linguistic imperialism. Places such as India, Pakistan, The Philippines and Nigeria have their own indigenous and local languages but are also ranked with the most english speakers in their country right after the United States which is first. India which comes second already has approximately 125 million english speakers. China, which is the most populated country in the world now has roughly 400 million people using English which is approximately one third of China’s population, according to a 2010 China Daily article.

There are currently 1.5 billion people that speak English as their first language, second language or as a foreign language. The English language has had a great impact on the world as a whole. English is still the dominant language that is spoken throughout the world. Although the language has evolved over time and changed in many ways it has still stuck around and became a language that was spread throughout the world. In conclusion, the controversial topic of English dominating today’s society has divided many people. With the continual domination of English it has led to many devastating consequences including people losing touch with their cultural identity, more poor and developing countries being left behind and people are becoming more lazy and unmotivated to learn another language because they believe that all the other languages will be unnecessary (Crystal ,2003) . Nevertheless English is becoming more of the ‘standard’ language around the world, making communication with one and other the more easier.
In order to visualize the “global” as an adjective in the collocation “global language”, a study has shown the numbers of people speaking the language. According to them, there are about 6000 languages in the world and not surprisingly English is at the top of the list of most dominant. In the world there are 375 million first-language speakers, approximately the same number of second-language speakers and about 750 million foreign-language speakers (David Graddol, The Future of English? These numbers could make people think that English is really conquering the world which can be both positive and negative.
To sum up, in the contemporary world English is surely the global language but the spreading of English threatens some cultures. Communities must encourage the preservation of mother tongues and learning English as the second language to not to fall behind in the age of globalization and communication since English had become the international language in all areas from politics to technology. In that way, they can protect their culture without isolating themselves from the fast globalizing world.
