What does it take to become truly satisfied with life? In the novel Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, a man proceeds through life searching for enlightenment. He continued on in learning from himself and others, but found a certain emotion much more important than knowledge. Siddhartha found love as the most important thing a man can have. The lessons Siddhartha learned that can be applied to real life is that we cannot only learn from word, but we must learn from experiences and that humans should love everything. Along with love and experience, Siddhartha learned how to listen and take in information.
Throughout his life, Siddhartha learns from his multiple experiences. He went from being a Brahmin, to a Samana, to a merchant, to a ferryman while through each of these encounters and lifestyles he learned from himself. The novel quotes, “It came to you through your own seeking, on your own path, through thinking, through meditation, through knowledge, through illumination. It did not come through a teaching.” (Hesse 32). Within Siddhartha’s words, he is in realization of how Buddha became enlightened. While he was a ferryman he learned that every object was once or will be everything, therefore he must love it. The text says, “This stone is a stone; it is also animal, God and Buddha. I do not respect and love it because it was one thing and will become something else, but because it has already long been everything and is everything.” (Hesse 145). Siddhartha is explaining that he loves a stone off the ground because in a circuitous way it will eventually turn to soil, which will then turn to life, and so on. We must learn to love every object or being as Siddhartha did because it is everything.
