Sia Furler is an Australian born singer-songwriter whose music has earned her a Grammy along with appraisal from celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres. She was placed on the radar of stardom when she collaborated with top singers in the pop music industry which lead to the creation of hits such as Beyoncé’s Pretty Hurts and Rihanna’s Diamonds. However, while Sia’s creative energy in creating unbroken melodies and a smooth articulation of words may have boosted the success of these celebrities’ albums, Sia spares a certain type of originality for her own songs. Often, her music reflects the events that have happened in her life as she has explained this in interviews (Find the actual interview! Support Yo Stuff). Particularly, drug addiction,

Nina Simone used music to challenge, provoke, incite, and inform the masses during the period that we know as the Civil Rights Era. In the songs” Four Women”, “Young Gifted and Black”, and Mississippi God Damn”, Nina Simone musically maps a personal "intersectionality" as it relates to being a black American female artist. Kimberly Crenshaw defines "intersectionality" as an inability for black women to separate race, class and gender. Nina Simone’s music directly addresses this paradigm. While she is celebrated as a prolific artist, her political and social activism is understated despite her front-line presence in the movement.
The music of today has many songs in which there is a hidden meaning or stories behind the song. The song " Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke and Pharrell is a song with a hidden meaning given much to talk about , another song which has a similar meaning with previous song is "You Do Not Even Know It " by Rick Ross. The intent of this paper is to compare song to song through its similar meaning. Both of these songs have a very rough meaning. These songs are inspired in hidden personalities , lies , appearances, violation , drugs , sex, etc. In " Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke and Pharrell it talks about rape and sexual assault and all of these because of the use of alcohol and drugs. Helen J. Stewart was from German/ English decent and was born on April 16, 1854 in Springfield, Illinois and died on March 6, 1926 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Helen attended the public schools in Sacramento county and attended Hesperian College in Woodland, California for about a year. Helen J. Stewart developed into a highly skilled rancher and a business woman. Understanding that someday the land in the Las Vegas Valley would become of value, she started buying land that was close to her ranch. By 1890, she was the biggest landowner in Lincoln County, which during that time included present-day Clark County. She was selected as the principal postmaster of Las Vegas in 1893. The name was spelled “Los Vegas” until 1903. The authentic spelling was designed to prevent confusion with Las Vegas, New Mexico. As the new town of Las Vegas started to develop and become settled with people, Helen J.
Arlene Shechet, has always thought of herself as an artist. When she was in her mid twenties she had a very dear friend that was in the process of dying. Carroll, her friend was suffering from a incurable disease and was dying as Shechet was giving birth to babies and brining life into this world. To honor her friend and to represent the process of moving forward, Shechet threw out everything in her studio and began to work with a new medium: plaster. Shechet stated that she loved the texture of plaster because it changed over time. She also applied paint skins to many works to add a layer of depth and various textures. Over time most of her sculptures began to resemble a buddah-like formation. She said that she didn't have any aspirations
Whitney Houston is considered one of the greatest singers of our generation. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, she holds the record of being the most rewarded female artist of all time. I chose her as my topic, because she represents resiliency and tenacity, despite her troubled experiences with drugs and her personal life. Whitney Houston comes from a family with an amazing, musical pedigree; her mother, Cissy Houston, was a successful back-up singer for Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Dionne Warwick is her first cousin, and Aretha Franklin is her godmother.
In today’s world, celebrities are often misunderstood, especially singer/songwriter Robin Rihanna Fenty, referred to as Rihanna. Rihanna’s sexual behaviors in her videos have been talked about in negative ways for some time now, but what [eople do not understand is that it is all for fame. Celebrities will do anything to keep their career going strong. If one really took the time out to take a deep look at Rihanna, they will notice how humble she really is. After going through the abusive relationship with Chris Brown, Rihanna has struggled with gaining that strong confidence with who she is. Her critics believe that she is still trying to discover herself and figure out who she really is as a person. Rihanna is often given two choices, to do what she is being asked to do, or throw her career out the window. She either gives the crowd the sexual acts they want or let her career die down. In the song “S&M,” Rihanna was really exposing herself to the crowd, as well as “Good Girl, Gone Bad.” She is basically telling the crowd that this is the person she is, but is it really? For my original piece I will be creating a journal, expressing the feelings Rihanna felt as she overcomes her struggles. Rihanna’s sexual behaviors in her videos are really all for fame and therefore, are easily misunderstood.
Erykah Badu's song "Bag Lady" is a prime example of the healing power of music, and the lessons that can be taught through music. Erykah Badu's "Bag Lady" serves as a wake up call for women across the world. From the first verse of the song until the last verse when the song begins to fade, Badu's words evoke feelings of emotion that women can relate to. Badu's lyrics also help women find some type of inner peace to get over their problems, in a way that will best help them free their spirit.
Amy Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983 into one of the biggest “music making” capitals of the world, London. (“Amy Winehouse”) Winehouse lived with her older brother, cab driver father and pharmacist mother in their London Southgate home. (“Obituary: Amy Winehouse”) Her godly musical talent came from the side of her mother who included professional jazz musicians and singers. (“Amy Winehouse Biography”)This and the music taste of her parents influenced both her interest in singing and the syncopation, blue note sounds of jazz. Her early passion for Frank Sinatra’s vocals developed from her father singing his songs to her but her parents split by the time she turned nine. Her grandmother however encouraged her to hone in on her vocal talents and attend Susi Earnshaw Theatre School where she further developed her vocal and tap dancing skills. (“Obituary: Amy Winehouse”) Winehouse grew passionate about her verbal instrument and began full-time training at Sylvia Young Theatre but was soon expelled fo...

Many people do not know a great deal about the teaching of the blind and deaf. There are many well known deaf blind people; one of them is Laura Bridgman. She was born on December 21, 1829, and at 2 years old, she was diagnosed with scarlet fever. This resulted in the loss of her sight, hearing, smell, and almost all taste. The only sense Laura had remaining was her sense of touch (Perkins). She was the first blind and deaf person to learn a language. The way Laura Bridgman was taught is a phenomenal story.
Evanescence, a gothic-rock band originating from Little Rock, Arkansas shows that in the deepest, most private recesses of our minds, a sinister beauty elegantly glides among the darkness of our most horrifying nightmares. By drawing upon the intense pain of tragedy and loss in her life, lead singer Amy Lynn Hartzler (formerly known as Amy Lynn Lee) effortlessly creates a shoot of morbid curiosity in the minds of her aficionados that quickly blossoms into a majestic stream of flowing lyrics. For some, the exquisiteness of such grim poetic genius entices and enthralls by generating powerfully moving feelings within. For Hartzler, however, the music she has created presented her with a form of therapeutic solace that has carried her through the years following the loss of her younger sister during her early childhood. Due to the commanding atmosphere she radiates through her spellbinding and siren-like melodies and the emotionally charged force behind her music, I believe that she is, what I consider to be, one of the greatest musicians of the modern day.
The lyrics of music play an important part of interpreting the meaning of the song. The roles which women have been allowed by the society to embody have changed drastically. Women may question their roles because of what they see portrayed by popular culture or media. Change in female’s identity can be seen in how women are viewed or how they portray themselves in popular culture specifically through music. In general, music continues to...
