The character I chose was from a book titled Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. I found Shylock to be an interesting character since there was a tremendous change with regard to his character. At the beginning on the book, Shylock was depicted as a man who was cruel and selfish. The plot of the story illustrates how people hated him because he did not show mercy to any person who default his payments. His cruel character is depicted when he intentionally lend Antonio cash knowing that he would not be able to pay it back on time. This character is facilitated by the fact that the terms and conditions laid on the loan are barbaric. Shylock insists on a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body when he defaults payment. As expected, Antonio was unable to pay the cash and this case was forwarded to the court. The court scene transforms Shylocks character in the sense that Shylock for the first time pleads for mercy. It is here that shylock is transformed to an individual that the society can relate well with. Shylock’s character had a great impact in my life since I was able to learn that evil has no place in any society. Shylock’s character symbolized evil in the sense that he was ready to kill an individual so as to satisfy his vengeance. I was able to learn that revenge was a tool used by people who had poor personalities. Shylock was able to learn that evil deeds bore negative fruits. Moreover, it is from shylock’s transformation that we learn the world is fair and being evil would lead to personal destruction.
