How do we help deaf children to learn and become independent? In the past, we have made many mistakes in trying to educate our deaf children, some of which are still used today in other countries. We must look at the support and culture we have surrounding the deaf community and their families and learn to accept them as apart of our society to help them to be independent. Choosing this topic was natural, growing up my brother had a developmental disability caused by a nerve between his eye and ear not being fully developed. This caused his senses to be heightened, often causing overstimulation to his brain. He acted out often and needed physical therapy to help him with motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Even our doctors lack respect and understanding towards their deaf patients. William Wilson, a former audiologist who has recently lost his hearing describes a time in which he did not understand his doctor, so the doctor came up to his ear talking loudly, blocking his face from view and essentially further preventing Mr. Wilson from knowing what he was saying. The lack of understanding cannot be blamed on the doctors and teachers, we can't blame China and Syria for failing to educate their deaf, nor can we blame Canada for teaching a less preferred language. We can not blame them, as they are all doing what they believe is best. There is a serious lack of interest and support for deaf people. Deafness is far more common than Down's Syndrome, yet you know more about the latter. We, as a society need to stop ignoring the voices of the voiceless. We need to learn to listen with our eyes and pay attention to our peers, regardless of differences, this is the only way we will be able to help the deaf community to gain independence and recognition as
