Speech 2 Hello everyone. Nowadays, video gaming, no matter if its online or offline, private computer (PC) or consoles, had becomed a worldwide phenomena. In 2016, video gaming, or what some people call it “eSports”, is equivalent to the largest Boxing prize fight ever and MLS’s 2015 revenue at $500M. Today I would like to give a speech on “Should video gaming be classified as sport?”. My opinion on this is absolutely no. Sports should be good for health, requires athletic skills, and help you to socialize. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a sportsman. I played football, softball and cricket. I’m also a gamer. I played a large variety of video games . Before I go through my reasons why my opinion is no, I would like to share the definition of sport …show more content…
Sports train both body and mind for the vigors of competition, whereas “eSports” attempts to train the mind at the expense of the body. Sports force you to use your body strength to defeat your opponent along with your mind to outsmart them while “eSports” just needed you to use your mind to outthink your opponent. How is that going to make your body healthy and fit? Pressing the pads and buttons using your fingers does not make it a physical exertion. If because of that video gaming should be classified as sport, then eating should also be called sport as well. Video gaming is sedentary activity and it could lead to obesity, video-induced seizures, and postural, muscular and skeletal disorders, such as tendonitis, nerve compression, and carpal tunnel sydrome. Sports may lead you to injuries, but just under extreme circumstances and lack of awareness …show more content…
Video gaming lacks all of that skills. If you said gamers endure a 10-hour straight gaming session, believe me, that is not endurance. That is addiction, and we all know that addiction is not good. Addiction to video games increases depression and anxiety levels. Video gaming requires nearly no strength at all, just push the keys and buttons with your fingers. With your body just sitting on the chair, surely speed is out of question. Some will said that playing video games need a very fast set of fingers. If that is what the speed means, that I’m pretty sure all of the typewriters in the world are athletes. In sports, you need to be persistance. When you lose, don’t give up. Keep trying until you had become a champion. Eventhough you couldn’t become a champion, at least you overcame yourself. But what do persistance have to do in video gaming? Maybe you keep trying until you finish the game. But is that persistance? In game, you could set the difficulty level. Unfortunately, sports is real life, and in real life you could not set your opponents difficulty level. You must train yourself to be better than your

In pages 20-24 of Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World, I agree that there are many different video games. For me, I am a fan of single-player games with story modes because I can play by myself and go at a pace that suits me. However, I enjoy playing online multiplayer when I have friends I can play with because it is fun interacting with friends and doing stuff together. I play on a console or my computer, but I have played on my phone and a hand-held device. I have not played a board game or card game in a while, but I would play it if the opportunity presents itself. The video games genres I play are sports, action, and adventure. I agree with Jane McGonigal that video games share four defining traits,
Video games first appeared in the 1950s and were urbanized all through the 1960s. They came to importance in the 1970s and established an original and unlike entertainment industry in the world. These games have evolved notably with time and have become a culture on their own. Nevertheless, questions were raised about their effects on people which led to debates in societies about whether or not they should be banned. However, video games should not be banned in this age and time.
Sport is the new Opiate of the Masses it behaves in the same way religion does as it is used as a deterrent from our everyday lives. Religion main function is to preserve the status quo, which means that it serves the “haves” and keeps the “have-nots” down in their place. Sport may be very different from
Studies have shown that there is a wide variety of physical and behavioral effects that video games can have on their players.
Of all the sports in the world: soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, etc. Is gaming considered one? For multiple years now, people in the gaming industry have promoted the idea of eSports. It is pretty clear, to this day, gaming is definitely considered a sport… at least by some people. It is the 21’st century and a new era is rising…
One of the biggest downfalls of video games is the distraction they create. Video games can distract players from actually playing the sport they play. John Hart, an advisor for the Texas Rangers, warns of this, sharing that athletes should not play video games before games, but instead be watching film and mentally preparing for the game, activities video games cannot replace (Brescia 25). Video games can distract athletes from not only pregame preparations, but from sleep, which is a vital part of an athletes health and performance capabilities. Playing video games late into the night can be very harmful to an athlete’s health. Video games, no matter what the game, can often raise the blood pressure and pulse of the player, causing the body to take a longer time to fall asleep and cuts the most restorative parts of sleep short. Without vital restorative sleep, a persons ability to focus and memory declines, along with the ability to learn and the person becomes more irritable (Dunckley 10). Video games can harm how much energy and focus a player has in a game and the impact is mostly negative. Video games have also been reported as causing injuries to players. Long video gaming sessions can often leave a player sitting in the same position for long periods of time, causing strain on joints and bones. Joel Zumaya, a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, was
This is true as really the only thing you need is a flexible wrist, a mouse and a keyboard. With just that list you could be the world champion in LOMA (lord management) and RTS (real time strategy) games such as the very popular League of Legends and Dota 2. Sports typically require a rather large amount of physical energy while gaming requires little of the body and more of the mind. Many still refuse to look at the fact that although games don’t require physical energy they do require mental energy, they choose to refute this by simply saying that use of the mind is not true “physycal”

Video games are not considered as a serious addiction amongst teenagers and adults, often being compared to severe cases of addiction, such as drug abuse or alcohol abuse that may result in the appearance of a decrease in the severity of the addiction. However, video game addiction is a serious matter and has unhealthy consequences for an individual 's life and their health; spending too much time playing video games can take a great toll on one 's physical and mental well-being. Continuing unhealthy patterns of video game activity for prolonged periods of time can result in mental health issues, physical health problems, and a decline in a social life.
Many people believe that Video-games are a sport, but the few oddballs are disagreeing. According to debate.org it’s 66% to 34%. That’s more than half the people. There is not enough people that disagree to stop video-gaming being a sport. For those that stick with
Video games are used to improve physical health. Playing video games does not mean being inactive. New and improved video games involve and incorporate different types of movement in the actual game. Certain video games can reduce fat causing global weight loss (Recio 143). By turning game systems into exercise, new generation games draw people into activities and get heart rates pumping. Schools have incorporated video games into part of their physical education program. Children’s waists lines have gone down by inches due to playing video games in gym class. In gym, the machines teach things like balance, timing, and coordina...
Video Games have been one of the main sources of entertainment throughout the world for quite a while now just likes sports. A sport is defined as a “activity involving physical motion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Video games can be defined as, “virtual reality where one acquires skills and competes against others in front of a TV or computer monitor.” Many people have argued whether video gaming can be considered a sport. The benefits of sports range from physical, mental, and social. Exercise keeps people fit, develops healthy muscle tone, and reduces heart and lung problems (Oak, Manali). Sports studies have shown that “youth are motivated and engaged in ways that do not happen regularly in any other parts of their lives. Their experience of sports stands out from nearly all other activities, including socializing and schoolwork, in providing enjoyment where they are exerting concerted effort toward a goal” (Larson, Reed, and Sean Seepersad). People who play sports bond over a common interest. This opens up children to meeting new kids and socializing with many more. In Kindergarten, I played baseball. Even though I did not truly understand all the mechanics of the game, I met new friends and began to develop motor skills. This was very useful starting at an early age and pushed me to stay active throughout my life.
