Should video games be considered a sport?
There are many kinds of sports around the world all played differently, but to be asked does video games count as a sport? Video games have been around for a while now and many people are really good at them like it is a sport. They work a certain skill and the mind like a sport, so why isn’t it counted like one? The reason video game should be counted as a sport is because it can enhance your skill and strategy, the competition of doing it as teamwork as if it was a team, and why it even counted as competitive.
First of all is what is a sport? “A sport is defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment,” says Merriam Webster. Technically a video game involves physical exertion and skill against another person. Depending on the game you

play, you can work as a team to complete goals as if it was a sport. It can help you enhance your skills with working with others. A test from the Max-Planck Institute of Human Development had done a test to see how video games affected the brain. They played Super Mario a certain hour a day for 2 months. It had shown that it had grown the prefrontal cortex, which helps you plan and contributes to behavioral development, the right hippocampus which is the memories, and also the cerebellum which controls the muscular activity. And all three of those together affect and control the motor control of the brain. So saying it fits the definition and description of sport. Now when you are for say online in a game like Halo 3 or Black Ops 2, you are technically going against other people of just computers for the people who are lonely out there? Well to be true, when you are playing online, you are usually playing against other people which means your being competitive, like a sport, and it causes you to enhance your skills. If you are on a team for say assigned online though, you are using teamwork to win the game against the other team as if it was like the other basketball team. You're trying to win and you use teamwork to get there to win the game. On the other hand, people think it causes people to be lazy and making them aggressive towards other people.
Sports in real life like football or hockey, usually lead to aggressive outcomes if they believe that the other team did something wrong and start a fight. Video games might cause some people to have aggressive thoughts when playing an action game like Black Ops 2, but they are less likely going to take it out on people than if they were playing hockey and had those similar thoughts. Research showed that your were actually less aggressive towards people like for say family for instance. Because when you are playing the game, you are helping defend each other from what evil or bad is surrounding you.
So for conclusion, video games should be counted as a sport because they fit the definition of sport, you play as a team and use teamwork, and it helps you grow and enhance your brain as well. Video games hopefully will become a part of school for a sport and people will be able to join it as one too. And of course for the nerds of the school, but what’s not to

What exactly determines whether or not an activity is a sport? The term sport is defined by The Free Dictionary as: A physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively, an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively, or an active pastime; recreation.
In pages 20-24 of Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World, I agree that there are many different video games. For me, I am a fan of single-player games with story modes because I can play by myself and go at a pace that suits me. However, I enjoy playing online multiplayer when I have friends I can play with because it is fun interacting with friends and doing stuff together. I play on a console or my computer, but I have played on my phone and a hand-held device. I have not played a board game or card game in a while, but I would play it if the opportunity presents itself. The video games genres I play are sports, action, and adventure. I agree with Jane McGonigal that video games share four defining traits,
When you think of children playing video games you probably think of a child sitting in front of a TV or monitor for hours on end. This is not the case with a lot of games. Now while there may be a fair amount of children who do this there are a lot who know how to moderate their gaming and exercise. Some medical professionals have actually recommend patients to play video games as part of their treatment.
What makes something a sport? What characteristics define a sport? Why do we feel that some sports are not considered sports when we have never played them? When you google the definition of a sport this is what you will find “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” So as long as there is physical activity and competing then whatever you are playing is considered a sport. When you think of a “sport” that should not be considered one what is the first that comes to mind; why? Why is it when googling “Sports that aren 't considered sports” Cheerleading comes up so often?
Nowadays video games get nothing but bad reputations from people. There are people in powerful positions who are saying that video games have nothing but bad effects and they only promote violence which leads to children acting out in violent ways. Who are the ones listening to the people in these powerful positions; Parents. Some Parents have this misunderstanding that video games are bad and that they have a negative effects on their child’s minds and how they develop after playing them. The parents with that understanding are misinformed and need to understand just how beneficial video games can actually be for their children. Although, some parents think that video games offer nothing but
The purpose of this paper is to present a literature review on existing articles relating to the possibility of violent video games promoting aggressive behavior. The hypothesis set forth was that people who played non-violent video games displayed more Prosocial behavior versus those who played violent video games displayed more antisocial and aggressive behavior. A search was conducted on regular search engines on the internet, and on EBSCOhost using the title “can violent video games promote aggressive behavior.” The research articles presented are obtained from five case studies each focusing on different measures that were obtained, methods used, the participants involved, the designs of the study, and the results of the studies.
I had always enjoyed the summer Olympics and the way the athletes strive to be their best, but after watching the winter Olympics I couldn’t help but ask, are these really sports. I have no doubt that the races are sport. There is a definite outcome and no dispute over who won. Then you have these other “sports” like figure skating and ice dancing. Somehow I cannot take any point of view that would support these two as sports. First you have figure skating that requires agility, endurance, stamina, and coordination yet the winner is purely based on the opinion of another. How is that a sport?
Whether they be first-person shooters like Call of Duty, sports games like Madden or Fifa, racing games like Forza or Mariokart, or even games and apps on your phones, there are quite a bit of gamers in here. According to the Entertainment Software Association, about 59% of American play some sort of video game, so gaming isn’t all that uncommon (Entertainment Software Association, 2014). As such, there must be some sort of effect on the audience of this growing form of entertainment.
Video games can give players experience and knowledge, but they can also, at the same time, drain energy from a player by taking away vital sleep the night before a game . Video games can be a great source of basic athletic skills, improving hand eye coordination and visual search skills. Young athletes, who have been playing and practicing with sports video games have a greater understanding than older sports stars did when they first began playing a sport, but video games cannot create an athlete. Video games help athletes become better at their sport, but the video games cannot help a person become an athlete. "A better analogy for virtual training [sports video games] could be weight lifting: It’s an activity that won’t turn you into a professional athlete, but if you are one, it will make you better at your sport" (Suellentrop 20). Sports video games impact sports performance positively, but a balance must be found between video games and real life practicing, as video games can cause harm just as much as improvement for and athletes sports performance

There exists a world where you can be or do something you’ve always imagined. You can fly in the sky or own a brand new custom Ferrari. You can be the central character and be hailed a hero or become a dreadful villain. You can do whatever your imagination wishes. What am I talking about? Video games. Now you may not believe it but video games actually contain a lot of reading, despite being action packed. Players have to read dialogues, hints, tips, help, paragraphs of information, narrations, explanations of various objectives, and more. Some games are even classified as visual novels. These types of games contain little to no gameplay but contain the most text compared to others.
Sports should be regarded as originally intended: strictly as a form of entertainment. These days, while it is considered entertainment, it is actually much more serious than that. Sports are productive – to a certain extent. When people cross the fine line between fan and fanatic, that's when sports are brought into a new dimension. That's also when the business side of this entertainment approaches the spotlight.
