Game On! “The US Government recognises esports players as professional athletes, at least where the granting of visas is concerned. But not everyone agrees. Despite ESPN dipping its toe into esports, its president John Skipper is distinctly lukewarm. “[esports] is not a sport,” he said, “it’s a competition. Mostly I’m interested in doing real sports”(BBC IWonder). In recent years, an argument has been made concerning video gaming and whether playing competitively should be considered a sport. Competitive video gaming should be considered a sport because it has the qualifications to be a sport.

Whether it is on a professional level or if it is on a “casual” basis where a group of close friends get together to determine who is the best at a game, video games bring out the competitive side in everyone. Some might say that playing video games is comparable to watching television, and they are used for relaxation. These people think that playing video games is just for this and does not require any mental skills whatsoever (“Should Video Gaming”). Video gaming is not just for relaxation. While it can be used for relaxation, players who take gaming seriously go to competitions where they can compete for cash prizes and hope to one day become a pro gamer playing in Major League Gaming. Major League Gaming is highly entertaining to watch because you are able to see what happens when you work hard and practice gaming. Professional players are highly competitive and people will gather from all across the world to watch them compete. ESPN , a sports television network, broadcasted the MLG Dota 2 competition on their website and Heroes of the Dorm competition on ESPN2 in 2014 (Cerrudo). Tickets for the Dota 2 event sold out for the entire arena in just an hour after going on sale. Valve, who is the company responsible for the game, made over 10 million dollars just from the tickets (Tassi). There were also over 20 million viewers who streamed the event. That year the Super Bowl only had 2.3 million viewers who streamed it
