Whether it is on a professional level or if it is on a “casual” basis where a group of close friends get together to determine who is the best at a game, video games bring out the competitive side in everyone. Some might say that playing video games is comparable to watching television, and they are used for relaxation. These people think that playing video games is just for this and does not require any mental skills whatsoever (“Should Video Gaming”). Video gaming is not just for relaxation. While it can be used for relaxation, players who take gaming seriously go to competitions where they can compete for cash prizes and hope to one day become a pro gamer playing in Major League Gaming. It would not be the right thing to do to call this a sport it would disgrace the name of sports and it could be insulting to those who participate in real sports. Considering all the training and hard work put into their game then have a poker player who probably does nothing in preparation for their game but yet can have the title of athlete. Does not seem fair to all the athletes that risk injury in pursuit for glory in their sport. A card game is not a sport like Matt Pusateri says in his article “lets try to pretend it’s something it isn’t .” "The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." –Olympic Charter
What makes something a sport? What characteristics define a sport? Why do we feel that some sports are not considered sports when we have never played them? When you google the definition of a sport this is what you will find “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” So as long as there is physical activity and competing then whatever you are playing is considered a sport. When you think of a “sport” that should not be considered one what is the first that comes to mind; why? Why is it when googling “Sports that aren 't considered sports” Cheerleading comes up so often?
To this day video games are not considered a sport because it doesn’t require physical work. Even though it is not considered a sport, events exist in which teams compete for a big prize. Others think that video games are just moving your fingers and pressing buttons, but it goes a lot further than that.
A sport is something that requires someone to have a special set of skills to do what they are doing within the said sport and also a sport requires some form of physical excellence in said athlete NASCAR simply does not have this no matter what type of shape you are in you can drive a car. NASCAR drivers are not really special either due to the fact that nearly everybody in this world can drive a car. NASCAR is taking a basic everyday thing and putting a competitive feel to it which simply does not work if it did anything and everything could be a sport. If all a sport was something that had a competitive feel to it then breathing could be a sport or even sleeping could be if it just had to have a competitive side to
American educational philosopher John Dewey once said, “ Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Education is the foundation of a permanent lifestyle. Parents should desire for their children to have educational stability to build upon. Any concerned parent should want nothing but the best for their child as they are well aware of the new forms of child entertainment. Since the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, children in the United States have become subject to a new type of entertainment: video gaming (Nickson, 2010). Video games have become a big part of the average American household. Parents have begun to wonder how videogames are affecting their children’s lifestyles. Inappropriate games are sweeping the
Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. One study done by scientist’s Daphne Bavelier and her team found that playing five to fifteen hours of action games (e.g., Call of Duty) a week increased how good the participants vision was in two ways "The first way is that they 're actually able to resolve small detail in the context of clutter… The other way that they are better is actually being able to resolve different levels of grey”. Sure games have violence in them but honestly what doesn’t, films and TV are chock full of it, heck even Tom and Jerry promote violence and animal abuse plus there is a reason that those big shiny red “18” stickers are put on games so that it is clearly shown that children aren 't supposed to be given access to these specific types of game. “I 'm very careful about how I portray violence in my films. I do believe that violence, especially violent video games, is not a good thing for young kids” (Lee, quote hook). This quote taken by Stan Lee expresses the exact predicament video game designers are facing, about how violent video games truly are violent and effect young adults. Although video games have ratings on them just like how movies and T.V. shows do, which can protect or keep unnecessary violence away from teenagers and children. Meanwhile electronically controlled devices can still produce violence in children because of the careless portray of cruel and vicious scene’s game designers produce in their games, such games like GTA. Sports video games, video games that replicate a real life sport, have been around ever since the first video game console was released . Magnovox Odyssey, one of the first video game consoles, consisted of a table tennis game. Gaming is a good score of entertainment and it's just a something to do,as well as at this point there are so many games out there now that you can test your skills whatever they may be. For an example reflexes, there are first person shooters that are player vs player to pit their skills against each other. Another example is solving games, and of course there's a lot under that genre like detective games where you're solve the crime based on your own judgment, and then there's the simple solve the puzzle games and you're just try to beat your past record. Of course there are so many more examples for so many more skills but I think I’ve proven my point.
