Should Tobacco be outlawed in Sports?
Tobacco is one of the greatest products man has ever produced. It has helped cultivate America into the country it is today, but there is a great debate over whether or not it should be outlawed in sports. Research has clearly shown that tobacco can lead to mouth cancer and gum disease; thus, people around the country want to abolish the use of tobacco and products associated with it in sports entirely. On the other hand, you have athletes and the other portion of the general population who state it is not up to the rest of America to decide if it should be outlawed or not. When it comes to tobacco, it is not just important on how it is used, but also by how it is portrayed. One of the major reasons why

Some people, such as athletes and tobacco supporters, are opposed to banning tobacco from sports entirely because of the fact that tobacco is a legal product. They state it is not the job of the general public to decide whether or not tobacco should be outlawed in sports or not. This is up to the players and people within the organizations. Here many anti tobacconists would probably object that it is not up to the players and workers inside the organization, but up to the general public to look out for these players health. But in fact, it is not up to them. It is up to the players whether or not to outlaw tobacco because it is a legal product that you can obtain over the …show more content…
One of the biggest factors of why organizations want sports to ban tobacco is because of the influence it has on young children. It is one thing for their parents to beat it into their heads to not use the product because it is bad for you, but when they see a player they idol and look up to using tobacco, it gives children the temptation of using it. There is a somewhat simple solution to this problem though. If the media stopped showing athletes using tobacco on television, then tobacco use among children would most likely go down. Athletes usually do not use tobacco around children. They usually use it where they cannot be seen, but the media takes it upon themselves to show footage of the usage in order to get tobacco
Growing up with a best friend who has been smoking since middle school, I have seen many of the negative effects it has on a person. Football was a passion and way of life for Andy; however, smoking caused him to struggle with breathing while running up and down the field. He would cut down on his daily amount of cigarettes before and during the season, but cutting down was little help for him. Not only was his breathing affected by smoking, but he also had yellow teeth, smoker’s cough, and would get “the shakes” when in need of a smoke.
A smoker knows the effects of smoking as well as the obvious outcome. Some smoke for the image of smoking and most continue to smoke due to the affects of nicotine. Everyone seems to have an opinion on smoking regardless if they do or don't. Recent television commercials that are against smoking has impacted a lot of the population's opinion on smoking. Recent laws in cities around the country are now banning smoking in a lot of public places.
The tobacco industry seems like a beneficial addition to our economy. It has basically been a socially acceptable business in the past because it brings jobs to our people and tax money to the government to redistribute; but consider the cost of tobacco related treatment, mortality and disability- it exceeds the benefit to the producer by two hundred billion dollars US. (4) Tobacco is a very profitable industry determined to grow despite government loss or public health. Its history has demonstrated how money can blind morals like an addiction that is never satisfied. Past lawsuits were mostly unsuccessful because the juries blamed the smoker even though the definition of criminal negligence fits the industry’s acts perfectly. Some may argue for the industry in the name of free enterprise but since they have had such a clear understanding of the dangers of their product it changes the understanding of their business tactics and motives. The success of the industry has merely been a reflection of its immoral practices. These practices have been observed through its use of the media in regards to children, the tests that used underage smokers, the use of revenue to avoid the law, the use of nicotine manipulation and the suppression of research.
While todays major tobacco producers deny that they market to the youth. However, we still see them subliminally targeting children through magazine advertisements, store posters, and Internet ads. In addition, they continue to use product placement strategies in mov...
Some actions should be taken on tobacco products because the risk of getting cancer is high. People vape everywhere in today’s society, blowing a massive amount of smoke that lingers in the air and could cause people nearby to cough or even children near it to cough. There needs to be a policy to ban cigarettes, it kills the smoker, in addition, it could kill the person exposed to the smoke from cigarettes. “The cigarette is also a defective product, meaning not just dangerous but unreasonably dangerous, killing half its long-term users” (Proctor). Cigarettes are not healthy in any way making it a defective product, it mainly kills the smoker rather than helping them.
One of the largest and most problematic health issues in our society is smoking. Smoking is currently the leading cause of death in our country, due to its harmful and addicting contents, such as nicotine and tobacco. Although millions die from it each year, smoking is the single most preventable cause of death as well. Without smoking, a tremendous amount of money and lives will be saved. I think that our country should ban smoking and the production of cigarettes in order to maintain a healthier nation, help save the environment, and prevent the almost 1000 deaths that they cause in fires each year.
With sports becoming more and more commercialized, sponsorships have taken over professional sports. In this paper, Alcohol and Tobacco sponsorships will be the issue of this paper. Sports sponsorship has become an important marketing tool for advertiser’s because of the flexibility, broad reach, and high level of brand or corporate exposure that it affords, (Krapp, 49). Yet some sponsors have created an uproar with in the society, these are namely alcohol and tobacco products. These two make up about half of the sponsorship in professional sports today. Sports sponsorship has been around since the creation of professional sport in the late nineteenth century. It is not a new topic, but it has become some what of a controversial issue in the past twenty years. With Tobacco companies being under strong scrutiny from the government and society, their sponsorship of sporting events have also been questioned about their effect on the youth of America.
.I believe that the Tobacco industry is unethical, They provide a product that causes addiction and eventual death if smoking continues thought the majority of a person’s life. I think that the tobacco industry needs to take more responsibility for their product. I believe they should do this by not advertising on the false image of being a cigarette smoker and focus on what consumers are actually going to receive for their money when purchasing cigarettes. They should focus on the feeling it gives people, and what the cigarette experience actually is in the most literal terms. Also cigarette companies should tell costumers upfront in easy to read labels the long term and short term effects of smoking to let people clearly know what they are buying and what it’s effects are.
“The unfortunate thing about this world is that good habits are so much easier to give up than bad ones” (Somerset Maugham). Almost everyone has good and bad habits, but the bad ones can lead to addictions. When it comes to tobacco addiction, it is a habit that leads to different diseases and causes death. Tobacco should be illegal. The American Lung Association states “There are approximately 600 ingredients in cigarettes” (What's in a Cigarette?
All throughout the world people do things that are not always agreed upon in different cultures, communities, and even religions. Some people believe eating red meat is a sin, but should you take it away from those who enjoy it? We are living in the land of the free. Aren’t we a snob? I am against the banning of tobacco products because not only is it a right as an American citizen to be able to smoke, it is a job for American citizens, and as long as smokers are knowledgeable about the product causes it should be a personal right to choose.
Every year tobacco is responsible for over 480,000 deaths. That includes people who have died from secondhand smoke. When statistics like this exist it is hard to understand why tobacco is still legal. This number increases every year that passes and most people believe it isn’t shrinking anytime soon. Tobacco should be banned because it’s deadly to not only the users, it’s highly addictive, and the tobacco industry is corrupting information promoting its harmful product. Society shouldn’t have to deal with anymore premature deaths due to a lethal legal product. We should work towards getting this useless product banned everywhere.
...allowed to make the choice to smoke in public. They must consider the risks of their actions and how it affects those around them. Health concerns cannot be the only driving factor when society allows other activities that are equally harmful to be legally allowed. Smokers have rights just as much as non smokers and as long as they do so in a manner that is respectful to others in a designated area, they should be permitted to do so.
There are lots of harmful things in the world such as alcohol, drugs and cigarettes. Cigarettes are smoked and liked being smoked everywhere besides it is poisonous. Although smoking is harmful for people's life. Some people believe that smoking should not be banned. However, in my view, smoking should be banned since it damages people on account of three important reasons. They are health, social and budget problems.
The Internet is the Internet. Tobacco is the substance that is in these cigarettes. These tobacco products are promoted through tobacco ads that are found almost everywhere you turn. They are in magazines, television screens. on the internet and even in cigarette boxes themselves.
One person dies every six seconds due to a tobacco related disease, which results in a shocking amount of ten deaths per minute. Tobacco is one of the most heavily used addictive products in the United States. Tobacco contains over 4,000 chemicals; approximately 250 are dangerously harmful to humans. Smoking is a major public health problem. All smokers face an increased risk of lung cancer, cardiovascular problems and many other disorders. Smoking should be banned due to the many health risks to the user, second hand related smoke illness, and excessive cost.
