The Great Gatsby High School Students If you have attended high school then you probably have heard a little bit about the Great Gatsby. If not then you are really missing out on a great book. The Great Gatsby is a book based on a true story written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The events in the book can be very harsh at some points. Considering these harsh events, some say the Great Gatsby should not be taught in school. Reading this book myself, I think the Great Gatsby should be taught in schools because it allows students to reflect on societal norms, it teaches what life was like in the roaring 20 s, and students see illusion vs. reality. The Great Gatsby helps them get out of their everyday bubble. In an article called, Why the Great Gatsby Needs to be Read in Schools experts say, Though The Great Gatsby was written nearly a century ago, its key themes and ideals still apply today. Students have the opportunity to learn about history and society’s foundation through literature. The characters that Scott Fitzgerald illustrates have clear archetypes that can be related to all. In the Great Gatsby there are so many different people. Everyone has their own group that are like them. For example, they have an east egg and a west egg. In West Egg, people live there with new money, meaning that they made their money on their own and didn't inherit their wealth. In the east egg there is everyone who has their money passed down. Then there is the valley of ashes, which is where the people who don't have money at all live. These are the poorer places that are frowned upon because they are less fortunate.
