Imagine a world where lying, murdering, partying, and cheating on your spouse is allowed and encouraged. Would you want to live in that kind of a world? ¨The Great Gatsby¨ by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which I believe should be banned, is a story in which all of the above goes without consequence. In a fictional town of West Egg illegal activities happen all the time, and the wrongdoers have even taught themselves to justify those activities. Throwing excessive parties can lead to several issues, whether it´s one party, or multiple. In this book, Gatsby, throws multiple parties in hopes of his dream girl, who has a husband, attending. Not to mention he knows little to no one at the very party he constructed, and no one knows anything about him. …show more content…
Tom Buchanan is cheating on his wife, Daisy, but is livid upon learning Daisy is also cheating on him with Gatsby. Nick is also with a woman named Jordan throughout the book, but figures out at the end that she is married. Everyone having an affair in this book gets off scot free, which is another reason this book should not be taught. Even introducing the idea of cheating on your spouse to teenage students is a huge mistake. Even though it doesn’t directly demonstrate that cheating is acceptable it does initiate the concept of cheating in general. Wedding vows are important, and on your wedding day you solemnly swear to honor them, but having an affair is unfaithful and breaks those …show more content…
Murder is guaranteed jail time in all states, and in some is even punishable by death. After a small get together, Gatsby and Daisy ride home together, but Daisy is upset because her husband finally found out she has been cheating on him. Gatsby lets her drive to blow off some steam, and she ends up hitting Myrtle Wilson, Tom’s mistress, killing her. Myrtle’s husband, George, believes Jay Gatsby was the one driving the car and ends up at Jay’s house with a gun. After killing him in the pool, George immediately turns the gun on himself. Falsely accusing someone is one thing, but murdering them without factual evidence is horribly wrong. Also, suicide is a very touchy subject, and to put that through a teenagers mind could lead to a huge mishap. Ending your own life is a selfish act with the potential to affect all the lives around you. Ending another’s deserves a proper punishment, which in this book does not
Gatsby is a powerful looking man who insists on having his house filled with nonstop parties. The guests at these parties spend much of their time gossiping about Gatsby, some saying things such as, ?he killed a man once? and ?he was a German spy during the war? (44...
With the thought that someone can be hurt by reading a book, people will try to challenge and ban them. To ban a book is to have it restricted from a certain age or audience. Banning and challenging books is trying to keep a certain book away from an audience due to sexual content, going against religious beliefs, language and vulgarity, violence, drugs, self-harm, racism, occult/satanic views, promoting gangs, and going against community standards. An argument from someone who believes books should not be banned is that it is important for the age group to learn about certain content and material as they grow up. Due to controversial content, the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald should be banned.
In his giant mansion on Long Sound Island, Gatsby hosts lavish parties, complete with colored lights, replete buffet tables, and a fully stocked bar with “… gins and liquors and with cordials so long forgotten…” (Fitzgerald 44) for anybody that wants to attend. No invitations are required, and everything is free. At a glance, this action appears generous and done out of pure goodwill, but the narrator later revels that it was all a ploy to attract the attention of Gatsby’s lover, Daisy Buchanan (83). Gatsby did not throw free parties to provide festivities and entertainment for others, he did it for the selfish reason to acquire the love and respect of Daisy
Gatsby’s obsession with Daisy leads to his death when he allows Daisy to drive his car when they go home from the city. Gatsby was so devoted Daisy that he would not let her take the blame for hitting and killing Myrtle. When no one confessed for the crime, George Wilson started to go from garage to garage trying to find the owner of the yellow car that killed his wife. Eventually, George arrived at the Buchanan residence, where Tom insinuated that Gatsby was the one who was driving the car and who was Myrtle’s lover. While George was at their house, Daisy did not come forward and reveal that she was the one driving the car, letting George believe Gatsby was at fault. Gatsby was shot and killed in his pool by George Wilson the next day as a result of Myrtle’s
And Nick finds out that he is very violent and sees how completely wrong in doing that , and doing something a gentleman should not do. This bash was used by Myrtle to show off Tom. The third celebration, Nick is invited by Gatsby. “ I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house, I was one of the few guests who actually been invited.”(“Fitzgerald” 41) The others arrive knowing only that there will be a party and they won't be turned away. At the party Nick tries to find Gatsby , but no luck. No one can tell where he is , they said they didn't know who the host even was , people just came uninvited. As Nick roams around the party , he sees Jordan Baker, “And I like parties they're so intimate, at small parties there isn't any privacy.” (“Fitzgerald” 54) , the two of them were being eavesdroppers while hanging around, listening to rumors about Gatsby, Saying that he once killed a man. Later on, Jordan talks with Gatsby privately , then Nick finally meets him. The fourth party,
loses sight of who they are. Gatsby's house and parties were a part of the
The next evening was another of Gatsby’s famous parties. Anthony knew he had to keep an eye on Gatsby to make sure there was nothing else going on he wasn’t aware of. Everything had to be perfect. As he blended in, moving through the crowd of party-goers, he was bumped into. He recognized the timid looking man as Nick Carraway, Tom’s cousin-in-law. Knowing of Gatsby’s personal invitation to him, he tailed Nick, hoping he would lead him to Gatsby. As Nick perused the party, he was joined by a woman he thought he recognized. Sure enough, Anthony was pretending to be enjoying a cocktail when he heard a familiar voice.
Tom Buchannan is not fully responsible for Jay Gatsby’s death because others were also involved in the murder. Tom Buchannan played a part as well as his wife, George Wilson and Gatsby himself took part in it. The major role for this death was from Daisy. Daisy is the main killer of Myrtle, which led to Gatsby’s death. Daisy only cared about Gatsby’s money not Gatsby himself. Gatsby and Nick are from a working background but Daisy is not. Tom and Daisy didn’t care about if they hurt the felling of others they only cared for themselves. If daisy truly loved Gatsby she would have told Wilson that it was her not Gatsby who ran over Myrtle.
Prohibition had the most effect on The Great Gatsby's most notable charachter, Jay Gatsby. Bob Batchelor states in his book Gatsby: The Cultural History of the Great American Novel, “Gatsby is a deeply flawed hero” (Batchelor 250). Gatsby is a hero because he was able to achieve the American dream by working hard to get to the top. Gatsby, however, was flawed because his dreams revolved around impressing and winning back Daisy. He was so blinded by his love for Daisy that he was not willing to achieve his actual dream. In the Great Gatsby, it is heavily inferred that Gat...

Everybody is getting drunk everywhere. And Gatsby gives no thought to cost- at one party he has an entire orchestra playing for his guests. People come to the party who aren’t invited, yet Gatsby makes no effort to get rid of them (he lets them stay, maybe hoping that they’ll help to ...
Another example showing the disrespect for women is the fact that Tom is cheating on Daisy quite openly. She knows that he is having an affair, but there is nothing that she can do about it. Fitzgerald comments on this power and disrespect that men had for women because he disagrees with it himself. He believes that men should not do these terrible things. Tom never once expresses his guilt for his actions, and never considers Daisy's feelings. His life is full of selfish actions which lead him nowhere.
The Roaring Twenties is considered to be a time of excessive celebration and immense corruption. The novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a criticism of American society and its values during this era of history. This criticism is first apparent in the people who go to Gatsby's parties. They get absurdly drunk, do not know who their host is and are rude by excessively gossiping about him. This commentary is also shown in the corruption of the police. Gatsby is able to pay off the police so that the activities going on at his home will go unnoticed and so that he may behave as he wishes. This criticism is finally shown in the corruption of friendship and love, the simple fact being that there is none. People use Gatsby and then throw him away. Fitzgerald's criticism of American society and its values during this time period is first shown in the behaviour of people at Gatsby's parties.
Gatsby has all the money yet he is not happy when he throws gigantic parties at his house. Daisy, the one he tried to lure in with his parties, never cared to show up. The love shown by Gatsby towards Daisy, “’I want to wait here till Daisy goes to bed. Good night, old sport.’ He put his hands in his coat pockets and turned back eagerly to his scrutiny of the house as though my presence marred the sacredness of the vigil. So I walked away and left him standing there in the moonlight – watching over nothing” (Fitzgerald 145).
The moral decay of society during the 1920’s was represented through the characters in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. People became selfish as their wealth increased, and they didn’t care at all what they did to other people, as long as they ended up okay in the end. Dishonesty became accepted, and that led to a downfall of society. Because of the character’s lack of morals and responsibility, Gatsby, an innocent man, died.
