Working Teenagers Parenting methods are different in all families. They can be strict, or lenient, but when one grows into their early teen years, it is time to start thinking. Should a teenager work in High School? In the article “Should teens have part time jobs,” written by Nicole Knepper, she describes how every teenager should have at least a few hours a week at a part time job, because it is the best experience for teens before graduating, and gives some extra money so they do not ask parents to pay their way. In an opposite article named “Working in high school doesn’t pay off the way it used to,” by Allison Schrager, argues differently than Knepper and states that working has died out and it is not worth a teenagers stressed, already busy, life. While working as a teen can be hard, the pros are far greater than cons including the extra money, experience, and people you can meet. This can provide a huge advantage for a teenagers future, and is therefore the obvious better option to participate in a part time job during high school (Greenberger). When considering not working as a teenager there may be many advantages that really …show more content…

Sure not working gives more free time than the average person could ask for, but they are not making any money or success while doing nothing. In Catherine Rampell’s article, “A Generation of Slackers? Not So Much,” the idea of the younger generation, known as Generation Y or Millennials thought of as lackadaisical and indolent by older generations has been quashed by Rampell’s explanations of the differing behaviors and ideas held by these two generations, causing a misunderstanding and misinterpretation of productivity. The era of computers has especially been a major cause of such a rift, specifically the dependence on technology of which has contributed to the growth of synergistic and collaborative dispositions amongst the younger generations- behaviors once thought of as ineffectual in the workplace.
Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.
Students’ wouldn’t be able to hold down a job is the second reason they shouldn’t dropout of high school. Many employers would like to have someone who has been too high school and that have been educated so they can handle money and add things p...
First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. This may be extremely agitating and stressful to a student that is not good at studying. The new college student may realize that the schoolwork is too much for him to handle and instead drop out. In Pharinet’s blog post, Is College for Everyone? He states that “…it is estimated that in the U.S., approximately 50% of students who begin college never graduate. There exist students who are not yet ready for the academic and financial challenges of college. There exist students who do not have the desire for college or learning.” This statement is important because if 50% of students that begin college never gradua...
Figuring out if they should find jobs right out of high school or go to college first. Nevertheless, most people are sure that they want to have a better job. Not only one that will pay more, but one they are pleased with, and one that makes him/her happy. Today, practically 60 percent of all jobs in the United States require their employers to have a higher education. Jobs for individuals who only have a high school diploma are decreasing. A large majority of high school graduates work in some type of service industry. These individuals also work in low paying jobs with no position to advance. On the other hand, college graduates tend to have more skills that qualify them for a much larger range of employment opportunities. This makes it easier for them to move up in positions. According to Catherine Rampell, “there are more employed college graduates today than employed high school graduates and high school dropouts put together” (678). Thus, as the economy progresses over the years to come, college graduates will be better placed to find jobs that will offer a larger amount of pay. Therefore, earning a college degree will greatly enhance your marketability as a professional.
Many students believe that they can handle having a part time job and being a college student at the same time. For some students having a job and being in school can be manageable but there is some students who believe they can manage their personal life and school at the same time. In the talk show Tedx Talk with David Ray, Ray mentions that students with jobs tend to struggle more in college and have more of a chance to drop out, when he states “students have to work part time jobs or multiple jobs to pay for tuition and they do less school work”. College is worth it for the students who know how to manage their personal life with their school life but sadly there is students who do not know how to manage their time appropriately and end up dropping out of college which results to losing
Most teens are getting jobs at high school ages. They would need a way to get to and from work on their own. More often than not a teens work schedule is not going to coincide with the parent or guardian's schedule. The job would just end up being a hassle for both the teen and the parent taking them. If they have a license, there would not be a problem with getting a job when they can take themselves whenever. Having a job in high school sets you up to be more responsible, builds time management skills, and you can save up college money or money to support yourself.
First of all, college gives us a variety of careers. You may want to be a Doctor or an Astronomer. Both careers are day and night different, but that is the beauty of a college education you are given the opportunity to explore new waters. High school graduates that don't move on to college are not given this opportunity, they are forced to choose from menial and odd jobs, that you may not even enjoy. In the article “Importance of a College Education” by Mr. Hobsons the author states “High school graduates
Teens wouldn’t be able to do such things like shopping and other hobbies if they are providing for someone other than themselves. A teen are not able to handle financial pressure to take care of a child of their own. I honestly can say that teenagers are still children themselves and are not ready for the mother/father lifestyle, so they should make an effort by avoiding that
The thought of sitting four or more years scare some people because some people didn 't like their previous school experience. Most people who are not financially able, choose to work time they get out of high school. Most people may realize college is very stressful, and also very expensive for most people and many people are not very fortunate as others. If you do not find a job right after college, you might be piled up with debts and unpaid loans. You would end up having a bad credit score. Then end up having a bad start with your life. Going to college teaches you a life lesson, it teaches them to manage their time wisely. Going to college will pay off in the end. For example, you are at an interview and it 's you and one other person. The other person doesn 't have a college degree and you do. You are more to get the job because you have more experience than the other
All in all, it is strongly suggested that teenagers to work while in high school. They obtain a lot of benefits from working, such as becoming more responsibe, practicing time effectively, and providing some experiences that will prepare for their future. Having a job while attending school is quite hard. However, a self motivated and well organized person may find it easy to balance work and school.
There has long been an argument as to whether or not high school students should hold a job, especially a service job such as in the fast food industry, during their school year. On one side of the argument are those who believe that holding said job teaches the teenagers responsibility and how to be financially responsible. They even often liken it to having a newspaper route or running a lemonade stand. The opposing side is of the belief that holding a service industry job while attending high school only distracts them from their work and has a negative impact on their studies. Although there are some immediate pros to high schoolers being employed in the service industries during their school year, in the long run, we are setting today’s youth up for failure, both educationally and life in general.
College is a place where you open up your mind and see the different options that are set for you , ranging from sports, engineering, literature and many other subjects. Many high school graduates think that college is only a place you go to obtain a higher wage, while that is somewhat true, students should pursue a career which they enjoy, rather than a job that just pays a large amount. As Danielle Allen writes “But we don’t want to craft an environment where people fail to come to their own understanding of what they should try to do because as a nation, we are justifiably trying to increase the efficiency with which we match human capital to the labor market.”(2) Teens nowadays are pressured by parents and media to obtain the most valued jobs such as those in the medical and engineering field, but completely ignore the fact that they might not enjoy the job itself. While not completely ignoring the income in a profession, scholars need to learn that studying something they 're passionate about will become better for them in the long run because it 's something they will be working on for a long
Many teens become overwhelmed with the stresses of high school and raising a baby; therefore, dropping out of school may seem like the best option. Attending school five days a week, studying for classes, and raising a baby would be overwhelming for most teens. One would have to pay for babysitting and many other expenses for the child that a part time job income could not cover. Dropping out of high school to work full time may seem like a great idea at the moment, but the jobs one applies for may be limited because the lack of a high school diploma.
Nowadays, the numbers of students who are always looking for a part time job while they are attending college is increasing every day. According to an article was published in 1998 on The Futurist, the number of students who have a part-time job increased from 5% of students in the 1950s to almost 70% of the students in some communities (“Jobs hurt school performance” n. page). Because of a bunch of fee and cost that students have to handle, working during college seems to be a necessity than an option. The part-time jobs provide not only paychecks but also experience, skills for the students. It is very helpful for the students after they graduate college and look for a real job. Although there are some people who argue that having a job during
