The Discussion: For my group project we talked about whether teachers should be allowed to carry guns in kindergarten through twelfth grade schools. Overall I believe that the discussion went really well considering on how heavy and depressing the topic we presented was. I thought that everyone in my group was well prepared, knew what we wanted to say and had facts to back up our topic. The map that we showed the class of the school shootings in America over the past three years was a great visual that helps people comprehend how often school shootings actually occur. We were also passionate about our topic and found it to be quite interesting to learn about. I don’t think any of the people in my group were for teachers being able to carry …show more content…
Personally as a student who would like to be a teacher in the future, I would not feel comfortable carrying or having access to a gun. Guns are extremely dangerous and I don’t think something so dangerous should be so close to children. There are too many risks of having a teacher being able to carry a gun. Children could get access to the gun and physically harm themselves or others. On the flip side, what if the teacher has mental health issues, gets into an argument with a student and then pulls out a gun? None of these scenarios have a good outcome and therefore further enhance my opinion on why teachers should not have access to …show more content…
Some examples of these features could include bullet proof glass, locked doors, more identification measures, and possibly even going through a metal detector before coming into school. All of these options are harmless and much safer than having guns all throughout the school. The metal detector might be a little extreme and expensive but I’m sure it would be effective because then it could make sure that people aren’t bringing anything harmful into the school. Bullet proof glass and extra locks on the doors will keep intruders out and keep children safe if there is a school
One of the biggest debates in education is how to respond to gun violence in schools. According to BBC, “There were 64 school shootings in 2015” (BBC). One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.
Everyone knows that parents’ first worry is the safety of their children. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine left parents, administrators, and educators feeling the need to be proactive towards children’s safety. Reacting to situations like these is not good enough when children’s lives are on the line. Administration has started to brainstorm different ways to help insure the protection of their students. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have started to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers because of the high risk they are putting themselves at. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of the teachers’ weapons and injuring themselves or other students. Because this idea seems quite extreme, I believe there are other alternatives that are less dramatic and more positively out looked, such as having armed security guards in schools.
Another reason teachers should not be able to carry guns is because it would be very hazardous; Kids would feel unsafe with guns easily accessible. Having a gun in the classroom would create tension and make it to focus. If teachers accepted firearms then a child could get their hands on it. According to Corbett from Slate magazine, “If a gun finds its way into a teacher’s desk, briefcase, or purse. A child will get his hand on it.” If the gun was easil...
The safety of fifteen or more students would be much more easily secured by one person if that person was armed. Promoting teachers to arm themselves also prevents school shootings; criminals don’t attack a victim that can fight back. At least 60% of school attacks would be prevented with an armed faculty warning sign. School faculty members should be armed to secure the safety of the country's students, and to prevent the majority of potential shootings.
Having armed officers in schools can help the safety of the students and faculty. It could possibly help stop mass shootings or lower the casualties of shootings that occur. Making schools safer should be an important topic to talk about because we want students to feel safe while learning. Schools should make sure the students feel safe going to school. Schools should study past shooting and shooting that were avoided. To further make schools safe and almost worry free. Having no officers in schools has only cause more harm and leaves schools in a vulnerable state for any kind of safety risk. Having some protect of our youth is better then having no protection.
Gun-control laws are a very controversial topic right now in the U.S., especially when it comes to allowing concealed-carry holders on college campuses. Nevertheless, guns should be permitted for concealed carry on college campuses if the carriers have concealed-carry licenses because mass shootings occur mostly in gun-free zones. There have been many incidents in which concealed-carry holders have disarmed attackers, and concealed-carry holders are overwhelmingly law-abiding citizens. However, the argument’s opponents believe guns should not be allowed on college campuses for various reasons, including: professors might be afraid to issue bad grades, a gun may go off by accident, college
My recently divorced History professor seemed to be in an extremely foul mood one dreary Monday morning. Every move and comment the class made seemed to irritate him more and more. Everyone in the room stopped moving and talking in concern for him, everyone except Josh, who is our class clown. He made the decision to make a comment to our teacher that any other day would have broken the ice and class would have resumed. For some reason, on this particular day it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. My professor looked up from the floor and in a matter of seconds had removed a gun provided to him by the school for protection, from under his jacket, and then shot Josh before anyone could do anything to stop him. Although, this is a story of fiction and never really happened, it could become a headline on the six o’clock news if David McGrath gets his way. He is the author of an article that supports teachers being given loaded weapons for protection in the classroom. To me providing teachers with weapons is a drastic move because the epidemic of school shootings is not as big as McGrath makes it out to be and there are many more sensible solutions that have yet to be explored.
Taking privileges away from the majority of mentally stable, healthy, hard working Americans just because a percentage of alcoholics, drug addicts, gang members, and mentally ill individuals are to blame for the school shootings, murders and suicides, would just be insane. So, why is the government trying to implement more strict gun laws for the people that don't do these heinous crimes. The debate on if the government should take the guns away from all the citizens in order to stop these crimes would not stop those who are committing the crimes in the first place. Then, the question would be, how would we know who really has the guns and where they are?
The schools had also brought in school officers to have on school grounding during school hours. They feel that they need these type of secured to have their children protected. Parents feel a little say knowing that there is a police in school patrolling. In several school they have started to do searches to make sure no one is bring anything dangerous that could harm a person. This is super important to makes sure no weapons are on school grounds. Schools have also put on their policy that if any weapon is found on the person’s possession there could be serious
“Since 2013, there have been over 200 school shootings in America, an average of nearly one a week”(Everytown Research). How safe is our family members at school? Allowing teachers and staff to carry guns could lower that number. Some people may disagree with it, saying that it would be teaching students violence. School shootings would be a thing of the past if staff were armed.
If teachers go through the proper training not only physical but the mental part of it as well. If teachers are gonna carry guns then we need to know that they will be in the right state of mind and will do what needs doing. We can afford any more lives to be taken by students with mental problems or any other problems that causes school shooting, teachers need to find a way to handle the situation without violence before they take a child's life.
Teachers should be armed on school grounds. Having a free gun zone is an easy target building for shooters. (Santoni, Matthew) So teachers having guns would improve the safety for students and it will become a non-free
Obeng, Cecilia. "Should Gun Safety Be Taught In Schools? Perspectives of Teachers." Journal of School Health 80.8 (2010): 394-398. Academic Search Complete. Web. 23 May 2014.
The first and main reason why is because it would mainly to keep our school faculty members and students safe and away from danger. Some people think that firearms are bad and evil. If teachers can be taught gun safety and how to conceal a firearm; there wouldn't be any problems. Students can be informed as well. Yes, guns are lethal, but they can be completely safe if taken proper precautions. The classroom is meant for learning in a clean and uninterrupted environment. A concealed firearm in a teachers’ possession wouldn’t hurt anything. A perfect example is the Price Middle School Shooting. A staff member said he had clear visual of the shooter and he could have stopped him in his tracks if he conceal carried. The staff member could not do anything so he fled the scene. Some people consider this idea completely terrible. The liberals think that the
I am without a doubt of the opinion that all teachers in a school should not be armed with a gun. It is an outrageous idea and shouldn't even be considered a possibility.
