Pay for Grades ? Should students get paid for good grades? Students should not be paid for good grades because students that were paid didn’t do as well as students who were paid. The idea of money caused many conflicts and and pressure with parents. Also, teachers and many parents argue that the only reward students should receive is the accomplishment of success. Paying students for good grades is also not a good idea because students have conflicts with parents and other students, children have worse performances in academics, and students won't be motivated by themselves which later leads to greediness and students will not study for the sake of knowledge, but just for the money instead. First of all, paying students for good grades
College athletes are undoubtedly some of the hardest working people in the world. Not only are they living the life of an average student, they also have a strenuous schedule with their specific sport. One of the most discussed topics in the world of college athletics is whether or not student-athletes should be paid money for playing sports. The people who disagree with the idea have some good arguments to make. Primarily that the athletes get to go to school for free for playing sports. Another argument is that if student-athletes were to get paid then it would ruin the amateurism of college sports. People who are against paying the athletes do not want to see the young people become focused on money. “Paying student-athletes would dramatically shift their focus away from where it should be - gaining knowledge and skills for life after college” (Lewis and Williams). This is very understandable because one of the biggest reasons college sports are so popular is because the athletes play for school pride and for bragging rights. They play because they enjoy the game, not because it is their job. Most people that disagree with the idea of paying the athletes fail to realize what really goes on behind the scenes. At most Universities around the country the bulk of the income the school receives is brought in through the athletic programs. In fact the football and basketball teams usually bring in enough money to completely pay for the rest of the athletic programs all together. To get a better understanding of how much has changed in the world of college sports a little history must be learned.
Should college athletes get paid an additional salary? They are an important assets to universities and colleges, so why should they not? How else would universities justify taking advantage of these young men and women? These are questions that arise when pondering the issue. This has been a large controversy over the years of rather or not college athletes should be paid, more specifically football and basketball players. However, they fail to mention that colleges are only considering paying a select few, the stars of the sports. Every single sport in colleges is making revenue for those campuses, making colleges money hungry. Thus, if they decide to only pay a select few, would that leave out women sports all together? Why pay college athletes more on top of everything they already receive? Most college athletes receive free tuition, medical care, meal plans and room and board, which can acquaint to more than a quarter million dollars for their entire college career (Scoop, 2013). Why ask for more? What is this teaching our youth? They should appreciate their chance to do what they love and value the education they are receiving, because that education is far more valuable than a potential sports salary. Even though colleges and college athletes have a few good points on why they believe they should get paid, over all the issue is larger than that, college athletes already make their share of “money” through free education and much more.
“Beginning in 2007, his [Roland Fryer Jr.] project paid out $6.3 million to students in 261 urban schools...from low-income families” (Sandel 52). As a result, paying students for good grades has an impact on many people, not only students but teachers as well. Students should be paid for good grades because they will be able to save the money they earn for the future, it will motivate them to do well in school, and it will increase their scores on AP exams. With the money that students earn for their good grades, they can save it for their future. According to student Brett Upperman, “‘Kids need money so we can save it for college.
There is much controversy about this topic lately. Some feel that yes, college athletes should be paid. While others think, they should not. I feel that college athletes should not get paid.
For years college athletes have been working their whole life to play in College. Day in and day out, working their hardest, pouring their heart and soul into their sport. Over decades athletes have been able to showcase their talent to get to College. When a college school recruits you, your job is to bring in money for the University. A real athlete plays the game for their desire and passion for the sport. Recently, athletes have been questioning whether or not they should be paid for their hard work and dedication to the sport. In this essay, I will explain the effects of paying athletes.
Arianna Prothero wrote the article “Does Paying Kids to Do Well in School Actually Work?” Her general argument in her work is about students getting “rewards” for achieving good grades. Parents reward their kids with things such as gift cards, scholarship money, cash, and sometimes even gifts like a new bike to motivate their students to go to school and perform better on tests. I think with all of her research and facts that she is against it parents paying their children for good grades.
In trying to decide what research topic I wanted to use, I took many ideas into thought. I decided that the one idea that interests me most is whether student athletes should be paid or not. This is very intriguing to me since my master’s program is sports management. In order to do this research there must be many ways to use research as well as ideas from other people. This project is a very big topic in today’s discussion amongst sport fans, college administrators, and student athletes themselves. Media has recently put more pressure on this topic as well with the Northwestern decision to unionize as well as pointing out an athletic director gaining an $18,000 supplement for a wrestler at their school winning a national championship. To gain a better idea on this very topic, I would like to do an extensive research on how many variables could affect different people or universities from the idea of student athletes being paid from their university.
Whether or not college athletes should be paid has been a major argument for a long time. My opinion on this particular subject is that, I believe college athletes should get paid while they are in school. One reason I believe this is, because college athletes bring in a lot of money for businesses like NCAA and CBS/Turner Sports for March Madness, but receive none of the profit. This money is not even, at least, distributed back into their education. These companies are making income off things such as their names and merchandise like jerseys with the player’s names and sometimes even video games(SmartAsset, 2017). It is not right for businesses to be making money off the college athletes that are also student struggling to keep up their grades,
Should student athletes be paid at the college level. Athletes should be paid at the college level because there is a lot of money being made in the NCAA. Student athletes are being considered amateurs because of the forth of effort to the business for no pay. Students spend up to 50 to 60 hours per week.Which limits there ability to find a good job that will match their schedule.
In many states, athletics in the academic system, are a big deal. Usually, the athletic department is what brings the most attention and revenue to the smallest of schools, to the largest. A topic of discussion that was brought up to my attention when March Madness began, was whether or not student athletes should be compensated for their hard work on the court or on the field. Many believe full ride scholarships should be enough, but not every athlete gets full ride scholarships. When determining whether a student athlete should be or should not be compensated, there are many factors to take into account.
There are more than 420 thousand student athletes in the NCAA. They all play a lot of different sports football, basketball, soccer. The athletes play a lot of different sports and some of them go to the professional and some do not . The average Football Bowl Subdivision Player is paid 137,357 per year, and the men's basketball player gets paid 289,031per year. The players earns just $23,204 in scholarship money to go to there college that is not enough to pay for all there needs. That will barely pay for books and food and everything they need to keep their hygiene good . Then they will have to save all there money all year long they get there next check for the year. That's why I think “All student athlete that plays college sports should
The world of sports has grown larger than life over the past century, especially in college. Being a collegiate athlete is, without question, the hardest athletic profession in the world. Not only are students devoted to their sport, which requires an obscene amount of time of preparation, but they are also devoted to their school work. And the award they receive for their hard work? Of course there are the great memories, friendships made, “free education”, or national championships, but are theses students receiving their fair share? Should college athletes be paid? It is a question that has been asked, but never truly answered. College athletes should be paid for their work. I even have the perfect system to see that college athletes get their fair share- Pay up! It’s that simple.
Sports have been viewed as hobbies or after school activities. Now people view sports as full on careers and dream jobs. Colleges have begun supporting this new view come true by giving full or partial scholarships to sport’s athletes. Already a big compensation , it is not the only benefit athletes receive. They now consider offering college athletes a certain pay for their representation and participation in selected college sports. For a high school athlete this appears as a dream come true. On the other hand , for an athlete who depends strictly on his grades to enter college , this would feel unfair. Athletes who represent colleges , should not be paid due to the grand compensation of a scholarship.
Students should be paid for having good grades. According to Psychology Today, the United States has fallen behind other nations in education. In addition to this, approximately one in four students in the U.S. drops out of school before graduation. The main reason for this is that students have little to no motivation. Students are either bored with school, or they are distracted by the other things that go on in their lives such as sports, jobs, friends and their own family life.
In conclusion, students should be paid to do well in school because it has many benefits to the student. Those benefits include motivation to get good grades, the money would help the student financially, and the student would learn how to manage their money more effectively. School is a big part of every person’s life, so it should be more rewarding to the
