As Malala Yousafzai once said, “In some parts of the world, students are going to school every day. It's their normal life. But in other parts of the world, we are starving for education... it's like a precious gift. It's like a diamond.” This quote is relevant because education is the most important thing children obtain at school. In the United States students have the privilege of receiving a public education and should put it above athletics. I believe that students should have to keep a certain GPA in order to play sports. If a student’s GPA drops below the set standard, then that student has not fully gained the learning that is expected of them. If students are planning on attending college they will need a good education, …show more content…
They need to be able to get into college, but cannot do that when they have a low GPA. Athletes are in school to learn and being able to play a sport is a privilege. A student's first priority should be to keep their grades up, rather than how well they are doing in a certain sport. Many of the best athletes out there are the ones who have good a GPA and care about their grades. Students who plan to attend college will need a certain GPA based on what college they want to get into. Some colleges will require you to have a higher GPA to get into them than others. The student athlete's education is the most important thing they get through grade school. The athlete's education does not come from playing sports, but rather working in the classroom. Studies show the harder a student works in class the harder they will work on the court or on the field. Athletic scholarships are very limited, whereas academic scholarships are more available. There are local scholarships and scholarships that come from the college for academics. There are many local academic scholarships for money, some worth much more than others. However, if a student's GPA begins to drop they may not be qualified for these scholarships. When students go to college and don't play a sport they are judged based on their grades not their athletic
Almost all colleges have friendly classes or teachers that understand the stresses of the student athlete that has to practice and study. But they do not understand the young man or woman who works full time and is trying to make a better life for themselves. These teachers are selected by the coaches and ADs as the teaches to have. These friends of the program will make sure that a student is eligible to play. These teachers will also sometimes waive assignments and even allow slacked attendance. Were as when the average Joe misses he will loose credit and not be allowed to make up missed work.
Football and men’s basketball players are admitted and given full scholarships almost entirely because of their athletic abilities. Academic criteria for their admission are far below those for other students. Their average SAT score are about 200 points lower...
Some of them can be intelligent and some can also be unintelligent. The fact of the matter is that, colleges need to try and work more for the student athletes. They need to try and make sure that every player has an opportunity to succeed in academics not just the sport they are playing. Colleges need to see that the athletes have an education when they leave the university not just that they played a sport for the school. A proper education is the key to a successful future, they need to be aware that you may not succeed in the sport your trying to contend in, so a degree is a prerequisite for your future, to make sure that you can support your family when your time comes to an end in the pro’s. It’s acknowledged that not every school takes advantage of the players and many the schools want the student athlete to succeed in life, but a great way to show this would be by demanding the athlete stay in school and become more educated. Doesn’t it make sense to put the education of your student athletes first, over sports? After all, in the phrase “student athlete”, student comes first, then athlete comes
The only reason some athletes make it to college is due to scholarships for their performance on the field. If they don’t perform well on the field, that scholarship might get cut. This makes practicing the athletes a main priority. However, college athletes have to concentrate on their grades so they don’t drop out of college. These athletes know they may not make it to the pro’s, so they know they have to have a back-up plan.
College athletes receive scholarships based on the fact that they can play. What happens when they get injured and they are ultimately dropped from the team? They are left unable to pay for college, with hospital bills and the dream of becoming a professional athlete is flushed down the drain. Some might argue that they can get an academic scholarship, after all school should have been their priority. That sounds great, but in actuality a lot of them have been pushed through school and will not qualify. They spend so much time practicing that they do not have much time or energy to put into schoolwork. Then there are the off campus/out-of-state games that they attend. Those do not just take place on the weekends; they are during classes too, and they will almost always be considered an official excused absence. These coaches and other people in charge of athletes do not have the student’s best interest at heart. All they care about is that they can get out there and win. In my first year of college, I found out that a couple...
Many people believe that College athletes have it easy, and who wouldn’t think that? A free education, free living; getting to travel and play the sport that many people would love to still be able to. Student athletes also get to pick classes earlier than a regular student and have the ability to be excused from classes to go to games and special events. The life of a student athlete sounds like an enticing thing for many people; especially those who are not student athletes on scholarships or walk-ons to a college team. The rising cost of attending college has made the younger athletic population work just as hard to receive a scholarship to play a sport, because they may come from poverty where they can’t otherwise afford to attend school, which is beneficial to them. Understand, that college is a place where academics comes first, and everything else is second; this includes athletics. But are these athletes treated fairly and given all the right things they need to succeed in life, let alone college?
Imagine a world with no education. It is hard not to imagine a society where no knowledge, no future, or no life. If the world had no education; how will we build our sources? How will life know what is right and what is wrong? How would society know about the stages of life from past, present, and future? Just think how empty the world would be without education. Malala Yousafzai, an activist of woman and children's right of education known for her courageous acts to improve education globally. Malala Yousafzai has positively benefitted modern society by speaking up for her rights of education and by inspiring others to join her to create equality for all.
Often in college, athletes will do just enough to get by and not care about what their academic performance means. Unfortunately, especially in some larger schools, preferential treatment for athletes does exist among the faculty. This also gives athletes the advantage at the time, but hurts them in the long run.
“Maintaining good academic standing is part of the student athlete culture,” according to women’s head soccer coach Jack Hyde, “It’s part of their responsibility...they embrace it,” he said (Stricklen). “I love football and I wouldn’t want to mess it up by not getting good grades in all my classes,” said Narayan, a student athlete (Given and Tribou). However, more and more student athletes are not finding studying and keeping their grades up a priority. Most student athletes dream of one day becoming a professional athlete, but without good grades, they won’t be able to go to a good college to play for. Being an athlete with good grades also benefits them when trying to get scholarships. Becoming a professional
Success isn’t given, it’s earned on the track, on the field, and in the gym with blood, sweat, and the occasional fear” -Unknown. This is relevant because it is hard for students to want to play sports but also to do well in school. If high school students can’t find the time to keep their grades up or to keep a certain GPA, they should not be allowed to play sports. Students need to prove themselves to be able to play any sport and still be able to do well in school. Also, having good grades shows the coach maturity and may earn them more playing time if they are working hard in school and in practice.
Should kids actually have to maintain a 2.5 GPA in order to receive and keep their driver’s license? If you think abou it. The reason why some teens GPA are so low is because they skip school driving up and down the streets instead of being in class. They could easily just get upset or angry and leave school. Hop in their car and drive away. They are missing assignments and teachers instructions how to do something. There grades will drop tremendously, because without help how would they know how to do something when they actually decide to come back to class. Also it should be a privilege to get your license and someone with bad grades should not be awarded with a new car and a right to drive it, Then they will think it’s ok to act out and
Being a college athlete is not given to anyone. It is a privilege and a chance to play at the collegiate level in sports at its highest peak. When athletes get to college, they fall into a state of becoming lazy when it comes to their work. The GPA standards for college athletes are to maintain a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (O’Neil). This GPA gives college athletes the ability to slack off and makes less effort than what a regular college student does. I believe that the GPA standards for college athletes should be raised and enforced higher. Dana O’Neil of ESPN summed up a jump in the required minimum GPA from 2.0 to 2.3 is more challenging. If the athlete doesn’t abide by this then it should result in an automatic year of not participating in their respective season.
College is a huge step that many people take in order to set themselves up for success in the future. From all over the world people with many different goals go to college to learn the necessary skills they need in order to do what it is that they want to do. Whether it’s to be a painter, an actor, or a detective, people go to college to hone their skills to have a lucrative career. Athletics is also one of those things. Many Students go to college in order to properly learn how to advance in the sport that they want to play, or be a professional. While in college you do not usually get paid beyond a scholarship if you are a student. That even goes for Student-Athletes. Student-Athletes was a coined term specifically to show that the Athletes
...d. Placing the blame of below average grades on athletic programs is a way to shift the focus off the fact that students are simply not applying themselves, and can in no way be proven.
Others who vanish for weeks on end, helping their parents with the year-end harvest. Still others who never come back, lacking the money to pay for school uniforms and school supplies. Such is the daily dilemma faced by many young people in the developing world as they seek to obtain that most precious of all commodities, education. With the global economy relying more than ever on brainpower and innovation rather than raw materials and manual labour as generators of wealth, a good education has become the key factor determining who will succeed and who will be left behind.
