“Teachers, please release your students to their Advisory class,” the speaker announces to all of the eighth hour classes. As I open the wooden door and leave the physics room, other classroom doors slam open and students rush out into the hall. Some of them, including me, plan to attend the pep rally that day, while others plan on the sudden flood of “doctor’s appointments,” releasing them from this school activity. Upon entering my Advisory classroom and then continuing on to the assembly, I can notice the sudden decrease in the number of students. This is an issue that needs to be addressed, as the students not attending the rally are ultimately harmful towards all of the students. There needs to be more involvement at these types of events, and this can be accomplished by either adding more incentives to attend the function or by making it harder for students to skip them.
The mindset of some of the students, that these activities are pointless, cannot be healthy for the entire student body. Foremost, students should be satisfied just with these laid-back occasions taking time out of their classes. Would they rather be stuck in a boring class doing busy work? I guarantee that they would not. Most importantly, this attitude of not wanting to attend these events that are meant to be something fun can be demoralizing to the people who are planning it. We should not let situation to get to the point where those people or the school no longer wishes to organize these junctures anymore. Furthermore, more student involvement would escalate the school, as it would contribute to additional school pride and enthusiasm. The student body needs to become more enthusiastic about these activities.

While there are some setbacks to both of the proposed solutions, implementing one of these is better than leaving the situation as it is, as student participation should be the primary objective.
While students leaving before an event is a problem, it is fixable. With both options to choose from, the first solution, where incentives are given out to the students, is the best. It is much simpler to implement, and the students will only have positive reactions to it. Rewarding students is better than punishing them. If the school rewards students for attending these events, I am sure less students will be signed out for “doctor’s appointments” that day. The improvement in student involvement needs to initiate.
I agree with Garland I feel that attendance shouldn’t be mandatory because that’s just forcing those who don’t want to learn go to school. Those who are always getting into fights and causing problems shouldn’t be able to attend school. I like how Garland talks about why mandatory attendance is just based upon the idea that every American has the right to basic education. “But as the old saying goes, your rights stop where the next guy’s begin” (620). Garland explains how every student who wants an education regardless of their inabilities should find a way to receive an education. On the other hand, I remember when I used to go to high school and I witnessed how my friends thought attendance was a big joke. My classmates would always show up late or not even bother to show up. Participation points weren’t a big deal in Hope Academy since all of our classes were online. It didn’t take long before the school started to enforce strict rules. If one doesn’t want to attend school, shouldn’t show up. I feel that mandatory attendance is outrageous. One who wants to learn will find a way to receive an education. Mandatory attendance just gives the trouble-makers an opportunity to waste everyone’s time for those who really want to learn. To sum up, mandatory attendance shouldn’t be allowed. Some of the brightest young students at this school are faced with a growing problem. In class there are disruptive and downright rude students who do not contribute to the learning environment. These bad students are a terrible influence to the rest of the school community, those who don’t care about their education are more likely to get involved with violence and gangs. Some of these students are simply “un-teachable” and are a waste of time and space, overcrowding the school and ruining its reputation. We must heed the saying “A rotten apple will spoil the whole barrel.” After all, what will become of these worthless people in the future? I hereby suggest a proposal to eliminate all of these social ills, make use of high school dropouts and the like, and better our society in the process: Excluding those with learning disabilities, disruptive, non-contributing high school students with low GPAs and test scores should be enslaved to do physical labor, if prisoners do not work hard enough, they will be executed.
I had the opportunity to interview with the school psychologists on our campus. She currently holds a master’s level degree in psychology and has worked for the district for 10 years now with 3 of those years at this location. Discussing what she does on a regular bases she explained how she reaches out to contacts within the community to help parents and children with unresolved issues to help them find answers. She creates activities that help to nurture a better lifestyle for these families. I discussed with her in length about these events and she described them as a social environment conducive to a higher quality in learning, social interaction and family lifestyle. The reason for planning these events in our campus is because of the lower demographics and the campus considered a special class of schools which are known as Title 1 which receives more aid than other campuses.

In order for the Middle School to receive their minimum attendance numbers, in order to receive additional funding, each student who does not attend school is required to attend school one day in January and one day in February. The children seem well educated in this system, and probably see the requirement enforced by the school to only attend two days of school, as just another thing which shows that the system and the adults within it care little about them and their education. I think the truant students probably feel as if no one truly cares or believes that they are capable of having any type of future other than one of crime and violence. How are the students supposed to feel hopeful for the future, when they are constantly bombarded with the message that people see no hope for them.
