The question that I was asked to write about was Should Chuck Norstadt be spending time with Justin Mcleod? In my opinion I strongly agree that Norstadt should’ve been spending time with Mcleod. I believe that when Norstadt spent time with Mcleod it really helped them both in a special that they both desperately needed. In the end of the movie It leaves the viewers to believe that they should’ve been spending time together and that it was a very special thing that Norstadt and Mcleod had. One reason on why I believe that Norstadt needed to spend time with Mcleod is because in the Movie it showed said that Norstadt father was a Drunk with severe mental issues because of his alcoholism and ended up in a mental asylum where he committed suicide. Norstadt does not figure this out until he catches his sister Gloria and her boyfriend messing around in her bedroom. His sister gets so furious that she screams at Norstadt telling him the truth about his father and where to find the evidence in their mother's nightstand drawer. Earlier that Mcleod tells Norstadt how he gets his burns on his face and on his body from a car accident with one of his students in the car with him who died and trusts Norstadt to not tell anyone. Norstadt got mad at Mcleod that same day because Mcleod caught Norstadt …show more content…
plagiarizing his essay he was instructed to write for Mcleod. So Norstadt went to go hang out with his friends on the beach and they ask him about Mcleod and how he got burned and in anger he tells them how he got the burns and how there was a student of Mcleods who died in the car accident. His friends quickly spread the news of what happened with Justin Mcleod. The night Gloria has told Norstadt about his father Charles as a dream about his father standing outside of his window drunk screaming at him. He's saying “ What did you tell them Charles” and repeats its over and over again in a yelling slurred voice. This is supposed to represent how Mcleod is a father figure because it's his father yelling at him about how charles thinks is what Mcleods reaction is if he figures out he told people his secret. Another reason why Justin Mcleod should be spending time with Norstadt is because Mcleod has not spent a lot of time with other people because of how self-conscious he is about his face being burnt and doesn’t come out in public very often. It's good for Mcleod to talk to Norstadt because it improves his social skills and improves how he handles social situations. I think this also ties into Mcleod being a father figure because both Mcleod and Norstadt have issues social issues with other people. I think Norstadt hasn't learned those social skills very well because he never had a father figure to be there for him and help him with situations like that. The evidence in the movie is the progression of Mcleod and Norstadt social improvements throughout the movie. Throughout the movie Norstadt and Mcleod open up to each other and learn to trust each other and are able to talk about personal stuff about himself. In the movie we get the feeling that Norstadt has a very hard time trusting adults because his mother has married several men and they all seem to leave or die at some point and none of them were a good father figure for charles.
I think it's good for Norstadt to talk to an adult like Mcleod because he a strong independent and trustworthy adult. Right off the bat Norstadt instantly begins to put his trust into Mcleods hand because Mcleod knows that Norstadt’s mother doesn’t know that he’s spending time with Mcleod but he doesn’t tell his mom to gain his trust. I think this is very important for Norstadt because it helps gain back his trust for adults that he lost a long time
ago. In conclusion I think it was very important that Mcleod and Norstadt found each other and were able to connect. Mcleod acting like a father figure to Norstadt in my mind was very important. I believe that having a father figure is very important in everyone's life. Especially for Norstadt because he need good father figure after all that he's gone through. In my life my father has been a huge help with everything tht has happened for me. When it comes to deep personal issues or questions I know that im able to talk to my father about whatever it is that's bothering me. A father figure is very important to everyone because without having one it can change how they view other adults and how they have trust in them. In conclusion I think it was very important for Charles Norstadt to be with Justin Mcleod because of both of there issues that they both had and both faced together and defeated.
For instance, “Can you imagine how those white kids would feel whenever they took the court? How long would it be before they internalized the lie that there is something about being white that makes you inherently inferior when it comes to hoops…?” (Pitts, “Don’t Lower the Bar”). Not only do these questions cause the reader to speculate about possible answers, but they also touch the reader’s emotions. The audience can put themselves in the position of the athletes and feel the way they might.
In the opening chapters, the story hadn’t picked up growth as much as I hoped. The main characters lived in a refugee camp and had considerably harsh living conditions. In my viewpoint, much of the beginning consisted of descriptions of the scenes and dialogue which were mostly irrelevant to the storyline, except for their origin story and the death of their mother. Though, when the journey from the camp to Kikima began, the story’s development accelerated, making me more engrossed in the book. Beyond that, I think Eric Walters did an excellent job not being repetitive with the description of the continual scene of the settings, the laborious walking and its toll on the two, since that would’ve driven my interest away.
Their ship crashed in an iceberg and all of his fellowmen died except him. This was the time he was very confused of what to do knowing that he’s the only one left. He made a way to survive and throughout his experience, he met a polar bear which he named Nancy. She is Allan’s companion throughout his stay in the arctic place. She became a reason of his joy and she also gave him a reason to live and continue to not give up even the situation gets harder the longer he gets staying there.
could have done a better job in explaining the plot. Facts were thrown in throughout the story
Primary Audience Outcome: I the want the audience to understand why there should be no controversy on who is the best basketball player ever.
The sexuality of the boyfriend and the mother could be better. The relationship seemed to the author to be of the mother giving the boyfriend sex when she needed something done around the house. They should also be using condoms. The boyfriend if he is not with her than he is with the other women that he has kids with. Hopefully the older 2 kids are using condoms all the time if they are having sex rather than following the example of the mother.
Ultimately, it is up to the reader to choose what the real meaning of this story is. At one point or another, one has encountered, either through personal experience or through observation, a teenager who believes that the world is plotting against them. The angst of older siblings, peer pressure set upon them by their friends, the need for individualism, and the false pretense that at fifteen years of age, they are grown are all factors which affect the main character in this story. Oates is accused of "producing too much" (676). This story is no different.
Mitchell Stephens is attempting to deal with the grief and angst of the townspeople, while at the same time, deal with his own problems and difficulties with his daughter Zoe. He obsessively retells the story of when his daughter was bitten by a black widow, and he had to assume complete control over her life. The scene in the car on the way to the hospital is shot from his perspective only. However, in the previous scenes where Zoe is sh...

A silence it was her turn to fill up… I was dismissed
Oates takes us to a journey of rebellion as the protagonist sorts through self-created illusion in order to come to terms with her own sexual inexperience. Connie’s desires for attention from the opposite sex, her vanity and immaturity blind her to think of the real intentions of guys, in this case Arnold Friend. A character that many critics argue is real, yet, others argue it was created by Connie’s mind.
Douglas Light said that our imagination is better than any answer to a question. Light distinguished between two genres: fantasy from fiction. He described how fantasy stimulates one’s imagination, which is more appealing, but fiction can just be a relatable story. In the same way, Books and movies are very different entities. In the short parable Doubt, the readers are lured in to the possibility of a scandalous relationship between a pastor and an alter boy. The readers’ curiosity is ignited because they are not given all the details. Therefore, their mind wanders further than the plot to create a story and characters that acted on one’s imagination; thus, the story became entertaining- flooded by the questions of what? Who? How? By which the reader can only answer. At this point, the readers create their own movie in a way. They will determine important aspects: how the character speaks, looks like, and reacts. Whereas, in the movie, the reader has no choice but to follow the plot laid out in front of them. No longer can they picture the characters in their own way or come up with their different portrayals. The fate of the story, while still unpredictable, was highly influenced by the way the characters looked, spoke, and presented themselves on screen. The movie leaves little to viewers' imaginations. In order to be entertained by literature or art, the viewer needs to feel that they can use their imagination and not be confined to a plot that reveals all.
Oates drew the character of Connie very well - she possesses many of the qualities that teenaged children share. According to developmental psychologists, adolescents become highly critical of siblings, and peer relationships take precedence over familial ties during these years (Feldman, 455). These traits are apparent in Connie’s unflattering description of her older sister June, “…she was so plain and chunky…” (209) and the fact that Connie spends many nights out with friends, but refuses to attend an afternoon picnic with her family (211).
There is also a sentence I did’t understand. “All the boys fell back and dissolved into a single face that was not even a face but an idea, a feeling, mixed up with the urgent insistent pounding of the music and the humid night air of July.” After checking I understand that this is when Connie is dreaming about boys and this sentence shows that how much Connie cares about the other boys. This sentence also hinted that Connie will eventually be seducing by the good-looking and cool
Also, the Nigerian Barge incident was left unexplained in the middle of the movie, leaving unanswered questions. 6. due to her family leaving to attend a barbeque. Like Chet, Connie also has to rely on herself to overcome her obstacles, such as the threatening Arnold Friend. Stegner and Oates both use this plot point in order to establish that their characters cannot rely on their family for help or protection, which emphasizes their transition to adulthood. In Stegner’s depiction, the purpose seems to be the successful overcoming of obstacles that a child, specifically a boy, has to go through in order to become a man.
