Heart disease claims 610,000 American lives a year accounting for 1 out of every 4 deaths in the U.S.. Other than cancer, heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. Yet for many people, the risk of developing heart disease as an adult can be prevented as a child. This can be done through regular physical activity. A 2016 study done by HealthDay shows that 90% of high schoolers don’t get enough daily exercise, and this habit carries over into adulthood. On the other hand, the 10% of high schoolers who do get the recommended amount of daily exercise, also carry the habit over into adulthood. To increase that 10%, kids should be encouraged to play sports before they reach their middle school years. This will physically and mentally benefit kids, all while teaching them important life skills. Playing sports on a regular basis can physically benefit kids greatly in many ways. The children could have quit because they did not like the disappointment of losing, or because they are exhausted from their parents pushing them too hard. If children are not active, then they will most likely become overweight, and if they have nothing to do in their pastime, they may turn to drugs and alcohol, which usually leads to a decrease of grades in school. A parent putting his/her child in sports gives the child something to do and keeps them fit. While not all parents are pushing for future Olympians, the fight for a sports college scholarship is competitive and parents may feel that their child will have a better chance of gaining one if he/she starts competitive sports early.
