High school students having to do community service. I do not think kids should have to do it they should have a choice if they would want to do community service or not. Why would you make it required. The teachers always ask what we want to do after we graduate and community service is probably not gonna be one of those.
People that get in trouble with the law are required to do community service. I think we should make it a punishment for the students if anything or if that is something that the students are wanting to do but I still do not think that high school students should be required to do community service. The students that want to volunteer for it I think that's great for those students but the people that do not want to participate
Imagine a typical teen, they have a job, homework, sports, and other extracurriculars. They don’t get home till late at night and they are exhausted. This teen can take much more and thankfully they are about to graduate, but wait the school wants them to fit in one hundred of community service into that schedule in order to graduate. How on earth is this busey teen suppose to do that with all that they have going on? Students should not have to do one hundred hours of community service to graduate high school.
If schools wanted to encourage community service then they shouldn’t force students to do it. Schools should let students know about volunteering opportunities and possibly let them sign up for the school so that it is easier for them to do so if they want
Lastly, graduation is a big part of anyone’s life, and disallowing it can be devastating, especially for a very small problem. If a student works countless hours getting straight A’s every year, they should not be denied graduation because they didn’t work service hours at their local laundromat. Forcing community service hours is completely redefining what graduation is, since it used to be that the student excelled enough in each subject to get the passing grades, which isn’t the case when students are concurrently forced to do worthless
President John Adams once said, "There are two kinds of education. One teaches you how to earn a living. The other teaches you how to live” (Adams). I agree with Mr. Adams and I think colleges should provide both types of education. Calling for students to complete community service hours will build the grounds on which they build the rest of their lives. However, many people don’t even give community service a chance. They say they’re too busy, it’s not for them, or simply choose not to do it. At my high school, we were required to complete thirty two hours of community service for graduation; many students came to love it.
Graduation from high school is a rite of passage that signals passing from adolescence into the adult world. Life does not end after high school, but signals the beginning of many years as a contributing member of society. Many times, as part of this celebration, seniors have a tendency to skip classes and school days. School administrators frequently recommend that school boards adopt strict attendance policies for high school seniors. These policies limit their absences in the last month of school in order to be eligible for participation in graduation ceremonies. This policy statement will support greater leniency for requirements to participate in graduation ceremonies.
Instead of allowing dropouts to rely on government assistance, high schools should implement volunteer programs to keep students in school.
In order to be successful in school, there should be a minimum requirement for high school students to do four hours of community service a week. Community service not only benefits students when looking for scholarships, but also helps apply what they learn in school to the real world. Volunteering helps students expand and practice on skills they have learned in school such as leadership and teamwork. Students who do community service learn to develop leadership skills as well as teamwork skills and this allows them to succeed not only in school, but also in careers and more community involvements. Participating in community service also helps students learn how to solve problems on their own because it is a real life experience. Volunteering helps students be successful in school because it builds a sense of responsibility, confidence, and helps students with scholarships to succeed for their future. I myself, for example, am a high school student who has done volunteer work at the public library.
In the future teenagers will take advantage of not getting punished and will start to commit bigger crimes. They aren’t children anymore so if they want to act like adults they should be treated like adults.
If a child repeats a grade, does it cause more harm to the child? Repeating a grade can be tough on a child. In the United States children are retained for many reasons by teachers and principals. However, retaining a child would affect a child’s social and emotional development. Therefore, dropout rates will remain high until something is done to capture a child’s attention. According to the Taking Sides book 2.5 million students are retained each year. (Black & Perry , 2008) Furthermore, if this continues then more state dollars will be spent on a child who remained in the same grade. Therefore, should a child be retained once they became school agers.
Community service: What a wonderful opportunity for students! A chance for our younger citizens to learn responsibility, experience the satisfaction that comes with helping others and to acquire new skills.
Education is a tool that can be used for various purposes. Such an experience ought not to be restricted to a structural, schoolroom environment. Undoubtedly, academics are an indispensable element of the evolutionary experience of gaining knowledge; however, the formation of empathy and both communication and self-reflection skills is equally essential.
Having community service for detention instead of having students sit in a classroom, shows the student that the schools actually cares for them . By making the student active, and helping the community it shows the student that they care enough to interact with him instead of forgetting about them and leaving them in a classroom. When you do this it makes them unproductive and teaches them minimal. If detention is run through community service the supervisor can interact with the individual and talk about their behavioral problems, while being productive. This way is a more deep and personal conversation compared to one in a classroom where no one can talk. Some may say that in having them perform community service they don't get the full punishment,

Lastly, requiring community service in order for high school students to graduate gives the school district 's power to determine what is considered community service and what is not. Would the schools consider babysitting community service or would they only accept service done at community centers? Giving school districts the power to decide whether a deed counts as community service or not would most likely bring a lot of bigger problems into their districts. Community service really has no limitations and students can give to the community in a lot of different ways, not just what the school
Youth curfew laws are intended to protect teens from getting into trouble and being harmed by forcing adolescents to stay off the streets after a certain hour, but do they take away rights from teens at the same time? Youth curfew laws have been implemented across counties in the United States. One curfew law in Philadelphia (“American”) limits the times youth can be out varying by age and time from 8pm to 11pm. Mayor Nutter of Philadelphia reasons, “…which will help keep safe our citizens, especially our young people,” when speaking about the ordinance. Fines for violations of the curfew law include a $500 fine against the parent(s). Just like with all laws, people have been for and against curfew laws. These laws have been passed to control teen criminal activity, safety. Some argue that curfew laws take away rights from young people, while others say they cause issues with crime records by charging youth with breaking laws that have no criminal activities other than being out late. Others argue that curfew laws force teens to bond with their families, cause them to stay away from drugs and alcohol, reduce teen pregnancies, and over-all reduce crime rates.
