I do not totally agree, nor do I totally disagree, with the point about grammar that Kyle Wiens’ argues in his article. As an employer, Wiens has the right to make any of his potential employees write a grammar test and deny jobs to those with poor grammar. In my own experience, I notice that people who have poor grammar skills tend to be less meticulous in their work, just as Wiens suggests in the article. Good grammar is virtually paramount for businesses such as the ones owned by Wiens, which are heavily language based. As well, especially in the new millennium, quality workers and employees are becoming increasingly harder to find among the expanding, figurative sea of qualified post-secondary graduates. Thus, I agree with Wiens’ policy of making all of his potential employees write a grammar test. His policy seems like an effective way of determining the best possible people to hire.
According to Kyle Wiens, a person must be able to know proper grammar in order to stock shelves or labeling parts (Wiens, p. 500). Wiens is a businessman and writer who is also the founder of iFixit and Dozuki (Wiens, p. 499). He provides an abundance of claims stating why he doesn’t hire people with bad grammar. These claims include good grammar makes a good business and reduces overall mistakes at the workplace (p.500). The reason that I think schools should not include a language is because not all people will be able to learn enough to make it useful in the real world. To make it useful in the real world you would need to be able to understand when being spoken to and be able to respond. This for most people takes a lot of time and dedication. Most of all though they would need a craving to learn that language. For most people to succeed in something they need a craving to accomplish it or to learn it.

A large part of an English teacher’s job deals with helping students find their own voices amidst the many teachings of their parents and peers. A student’s voice can be their values, their interests, and their perspectives of the world in which they live. Their voice can be their critical questioning of the many situations they face, whether in a text, the school cafeteria, or a park after school. It is the job of an English teacher to aid in finding this voice through their writing. It is by putting words and thoughts down on paper that a student can sometimes feel comfortable enough to take risks and find their true voices. Although traditional grammar instruction has long been thought to improve this skill, this is no longer the case. Instead, by providing a classroom environment in which students are immersed in classic literature from many genres including poetry, short stories, and novels, students will learn how to harness grammar for their own purposes of finding their voice in their writing.
Susan Adams and Kyle Weins have both written articles on the importance of using good grammar in the workplace. Each article gives numerous compelling reasons why this is a good practice. Susan Adams’ article first reason for doing so is in regards to how other people would view someone who uses bad grammar. She brings out that someone’s image can be damaged when they have improper speech habits; consequently their chances of advancing at work could be limited. Second, she shows how using poor grammar could cause a manager to view an employee as unorganized or unable to perform more advanced tasks. There is no question of whether or not grammar should be taught because it is detrimental when learning a language. However, there are ways that grammar can be taught and utilized more easily than others. Providing students with an explanation, clear use of the specific aspect of grammar, and ways to practice, grammar can be digested much more easily. It is important that students understand why they are studying something and what importance it holds. As a student and as a teacher I understand that it is easy to be overwhelmed. A human being can only take in so much information in one sitting; this is key information to know especially when teaching grammar because it can be very intense to some.
