Future Pro Athletes Deserve Better Hebert Escobar Keiser University Future Pro Athletes Deserve Better College sports can be as competitive and demanding as any professional sport. Students are required to contribute deeply into their sports. Which means a high demand of money, effort, and time is necessary. Unlike professional athletes, college sportsmen are not compensated economically. In other words, it is not fair because college attendants are competing at a professional level and are not allowed a salary. Therefore, our future pro athletes deserve a monthly compensation in order to keep them focused in their particular sport. On a day to day basis, college sports participants are asked for more and more. Luckily, schools provide all the sport equipment. At the same time, colleges do not provide extra training or training equipment that they might need to improve physically. For example, if a college basketball player acquires some sort of income he can use it for a training camp or specific program to be in a improved physical condition. Training equipment is expensive, which is why a salary for these athletes is needed. Due to the fact that students have to commit one hundred percent into the specific sport, this leaves the athlete with no energy to focus on any other …show more content…
All the training leaves the athlete with no strength or will to also maintain a job. It is hard enough to attend college, on top of that having a sport as an obligation can be extremely difficult without economic support. Schools are recognized for the athletes that participate in them and are constantly being paid for doing good or bad. Therefore, for students to be compensated is extremely helpful. At the same time that students are not getting paid, all the staff in the sport have a salary, which leads for a lot of students to drop out of their particular
Those who play popular and highly competitive college sports are treated unfairly. The colleges and universities with successful sports like football and basketball receive millions of dollars in television and ad space revenues, so do the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which is the governing body of big time college sports. Many coaches are also paid over $1 million per year. Meanwhile, the players that help the colleges receive these millions of dollars are forbidden to receive any gifts or money for their athletic achievements and performances. As a solution college athletes ...

Abstract: Collegiate athletes participating in the two revenue sports (football, men's basketball) sacrifice their time, education, and risk physical harm for their respected programs. The players are controlled by a governing body (NCAA) that dictates when they can show up to work, and when they cannot show up for work. They are restricted from making any substantial financial gains outside of their sports arena. These athletes receive no compensation for their efforts, while others prosper from their abilities. The athletes participating in the two revenue sports of college athletics, football and men's basketball should be compensated for their time, dedication, and work put forth in their respected sports.
Athletes everywhere complain and gripe about how little money they have. What they don’t realize is, it’s not just them. Most college students do not have a sufficient amount of money that they can buy whatever they want. It is outrageous that athletes believe they are entitled to accommodations because they play sports. To play a sport at the collegiate level is a privilege (Top 10 Reasons College Athletes Should Not Be Paid). Students that participate in athletics should not receive any payment because they are receiving tons of benefits, free tuition, and this would extend the talent gap.
Today there are over 450,000 college athletes and the National College Athletics Association (NCAA) faces a difficult decision on whether or not college athletes should be paid. Many people believe that they should and many believe they should not. There are several benefits that college’s athletes receive for being a student athlete. Why should they receive even more benefits than their scholarship and numerous perks?
Ever since college students started playing sports, back in 1879 when Harvard played Yale in the first collegiate sports game, the question of whether college athletes should be paid was addressed. From that point on athletes, coaches, and college administrators have brought forward points agreeing or disagreeing with the notion of paying college students. The students argue that they deserve to be paid due to the revenue that they bring for the college and because of the games they play and the championships they win. At first the idea of paying college athletes was out of the question, but now the argument has gone from a simple yes or no to a heated debate. Since college athletes are given a free education, they should not also be paid.
College athletics is a billion dollar industry and has been for a long time. Due to the increasing ratings of college athletics, this figure will continue to rise. It’s simple: bigger, faster, stronger athletes will generate more money. College Universities generate so much revenue during the year that it is only fair to the players that they get a cut. College athletes should get paid based on the university’s revenue, apparel sales, and lack of spending money.
The debate on whether college athletes should be paid to play is a sensitive controversy, with strong support on both sides. College athletics have been around for a long time and always been worth a good amount of money. This billion dollar industry continues to grow in popularity and net worth, while they continue to see more and more money come in. The student-athletes who they are making the money off of see absolutely none of this income. It is time that the student-athletes start to see some of this income he or she may by helping bring the National Collegiate Athletic Association. There are many people who do not think this is in the best interest of the student-athletes or Universities, but that being said there are also many people who are in favor of the change.
There is currently a major issue in today’s college athletics. Universities and the NCAA make billions of dollars while some student-athletes go hungry. There is a huge debate over whether or not student-athletes should be paid as employees of their respective colleges. Personally, I don’t believe players should receive full-time salaries, but Universities and the NCAA should be required to increase the value of the scholarships that they award to student-athletes. By requiring that colleges provide athletes with an additional $2,000 per semester as part of their scholarship you can greatly increase the well-being (welfare) of the students.
One of the strongest arguments against student athletes getting paid is that many people feel they already are getting paid, through their financial aid package. Sports Illustrated author, Seth Davis, states in his article “Hoop Thoughts”, that “student athletes are already being payed by earning a free tuition. Which over the course of four years can exceed $200,000, depending on the school they attend. They are also provided with housing, textbooks, food and academic tutoring. When they travel to road games, they are given per diems for meals. They also get coaching, training, game experience and media exposure in their respective crafts” (Davis, 2011). This is a considerable amount of income. While the majority of regular students are walking out of school with a sizeable amount of debt, most student athletes are debt free. Plus they get to enjoy other benefits that are not made available to the average student. They get to travel with their teams, t...
In today’s society, one of the big controversies with sports is, should student athletes be be paid a salary? Some people believe that they should be paid and others would completely disagree. Even though they technically are being paid, they really are not. The only type of way the athletes would be paid is through financial aid or if they have a job. Only their education is being paid by the school. Although some people believe that they should be paid, it would not be a good idea at all. So college athletes should not be paid at all because they are basically being paid to study and play a sport.
College athletes should be paid! College athletes are often considered to be some of the luckiest students in the world. Most of them receiving all inclusive scholarships that cover all the costs of their education. They are also in a position to make a reputation for themselves in the sporting world preparing them for the next step. The ongoing debate whether student athletes should be paid has been going on for years. These athletes bring in millions of dollars for their respective schools and receive zero in return. Many will argue that they do receive payment, but in reality it is just not true. Costs associated with getting a college education will be discussed, information pertaining to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and benefits student athletes receive. First, I’ll start with costs associated with college and most of all why student athletes should be paid!
For example, when the professional football player attends a summer camp, practices during the week, and plays one game a week for 17 weeks, a massive salary is paid for the services rendered by these athletes. When a college football player attends a summer camp, practices everyday during the on season and plays one game a week for 13 weeks, they do not receive so much as a little monetary compensation for their services rendered. College athletes are required to put in a massive amount of hours just as professional athletes are required. “But the hours detailed in the NLRB report total 1,750 hours a year”(Isidore). If a college football player devotes as much time as a professional football player spends, consequently a college football player deserves a stipend for the work he produces. Playing sports hours on end snatches away time from academics and this makes it impossible to acquire a job. In place, their job should be to play their sport for their college and their sport should be treated exactly like a job. Not only are they limited to the amount of hours they receive to study for their major; they don’t necessarily receive the major they wish. “Athletes don 't have free choice of what major they take if the classes conflict with practice schedules” (Cooper). Although college athletes play a college sport, they receive no extra money out of it and they might
In many states, athletics in the academic system, are a big deal. Usually, the athletic department is what brings the most attention and revenue to the smallest of schools, to the largest. A topic of discussion that was brought up to my attention when March Madness began, was whether or not student athletes should be compensated for their hard work on the court or on the field. Many believe full ride scholarships should be enough, but not every athlete gets full ride scholarships. When determining whether a student athlete should be or should not be compensated, there are many factors to take into account.
