Football Football brings tremendous joy around the world but is it right for our high schools? Football brings a sense of unity in our schools but is it worth the effects it causes. Football should not be allowed in our high schools for many reasons: football is dangerous and could leave players with lasting health issues, it’s costly, and it takes away the real purpose of school. First and foremost, football is one of the most dangerous sports to play in high school; in fact, it’s more dangerous to play in high school than in college. A study has shown that, “…estimated high school football players suffered 11.2 concussions for every 10,000 games and practices, whereas college players, the rate is 6.3.”(Frontline) Another reason, which makes football so dangerous in high schools, is that most high schools don’t have standard medical testing for football players and have no standard requirement for medical personnel for the team. (NPR) Most importantly, …show more content…
For example, “United States spends more tax dollars per high-school athlete than per high-school math student.”(Atlantic) Why is so much money being spent on sports rather than education in schools? Some high schools would rather cut back on teachers and education resources than, to cut back on the money spent on football. Such as a Texas district, they laid off employees, closed a middle school and moved its classes, and sealed of science labs all to cut costs, but no cost cuts were made to their high school football team. (Atlantic) The money that is being spent on for football is more outrageous than we could have expected, a fifteen year school principal stated that one football season cost his school 150,000 dollars, with that money they could of kept teachers and spent it on educational purposes. For this fact, football should not be allowed in our high schools, it is just too costly for the schools, and the money should be spent
Football is one of the most popular sports in the United States, and it’s viewed as the most exciting and intriguing American sport. Many football players have highly affected the lives of their fans; they are looked upon as role models and they are admired and worshiped by many. Football’s biggest event, the Super Bowl, brings in many viewers each year. Football attracts many people of all age groups and its widely played in high schools, colleges, and professionally. It seems like any normal sport—but is it safe?
Are young children putting their health and even their lives at risk if they partake in the sport of football? Some claim that the American sport is far too dangerous and the risk of concussions and injuries far outway the pros of the physical sport, while others insist that technological improvements and new regulations have made the sport safer. Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history and education at New York University, argues in his paper, “We Must Stop Risking the Health of Young Football Players,” that football is a sport that is too dangerous for the youth. He states his belief that technological improvements in helmets and changes in the rules of the sport have had little effect on reducing injuries and that nothing has worked.
High school football. Is it still just a relatively harmless school activity played amongst students in high school or has the tide turned and the game become out of control? In the state of Texas the game has taken a turn for the worse. Coaches threaten to kill players and use physical force in punishing them. The game is no longer what was simply a sport to entertain the students when pursuing academics. Chartered 727's for away games. Homes repainted in team colors. Parents relocating so their child can have the best "football" school. The game is not what is use to be and in small towns across the state of Texas a Friday night ritual has chang...
Football is an extremely violent game not only in the physical part but also in the mental part of the game. Players are coach to be vicious on the field. they are taught to get mad and take their aggression out on the other player. Which can be dangerous when two or more players are trying to hurt(intentionally or not) the other player by hitting them hard. High school sports are dangerous because rese...
As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life. In contrast to the positives, high school athletics can be seen in a negative light. “Concussions [from athletics] cause structural brain damage” (Solotaroff 7). Even though nobody is said to get a concussion in Friday Night Lights, they are very frequent in football and in other sports today. They occur all the time in football.
Football is not a dangerous sport for high schoolers to be playing. It is played to show others what great team work is all about. Football will always have hard hitting and injuries involved. But it is a great way to get into a good college. Great warm-up exercises before a game are great way to be ready for the game.
I am in favor that college football should not be banned. This sport is such a big part of many males, and a few females’ lives. This sport has caused many injuries, but so has baseball, basketball, or even cheerleading. Football provides many scholarships for young men who otherwise would not be able to afford college Also football teams gives individuals a sense of confidence, and a place they feel that belong. There are football players that get their encouragement to get up everyday, because of their love for this sport. Also a team is like your family. When I was on the dance team at my high school, a team feels as if they are your family. These are just a few reasons I feel that college football should not be banned.
Since football’s inception, it has been considered a manly sport. Young boys have been encouraged by their parents to participate in the game. For many boys, it is considered a rite of passage. However, football is a dangerous sport. A study conducted by the Center for Injury Research and Policy found, “an estimated 5.25 million football-related injuries among children and adolescents between 6 and 17 years of age were treated in U.S. emergency departments between 1990 and 2007. The annual number of football-related injuries increased 27 percent during the 18-year study period, jumping from 274,094 in 1990 to 346,772 in 2007” (Nation 201). These reported injuries include sprains and strains, broken bones, cracked ribs, torn ligaments, and concussions. A concussion usually happens when a player takes a hard hit to the head or is knocked unconscious on the playing field, and if not diagnosed and treated quickly, a concussion can result in death.
Football is possibly too dangerous of a game for young boys and girls to be playing. I am not talking about all forms of football, but more specifically tackle football. Yes, football may possibly be one of America’s loved sport because of the brutality that it consists of; although I believe that there should be an age where kids should start playing such a horrific game. At the age of ten young boys, and girls, should be worrying about who they are going to be playing with outside at recess. Kids should not have to be worried about their friends having to miss school because of a concussion, or worse him or herself.
How dangerous is high school football? That’s a question that a lot of coaches get asked. In reality they can not give a correct answer. Personally I believe that every sport is dangerous but, if you play the correct way it could be safe. Every sport has its tricks and ways of doing things the correct way. You can assure anyone that the sport their child is playing is safe, because there is always a stronger, bigger, faster player than them. Personally I believe football is a demanding sport that requires a lot of strength, and stamina.
High school football may be dangerous but it is also a life altering experience. From what these boys can do out on the field to what they can become in life and all the things they can accomplish, putting it in peoples head that it is a dangerous sport is ridiculous. Yes, football can cause some serious injury but those chances aren’t very high and what are these boys going to get out of life if they never take that risk? Then end up asking themselves, “what if?” These boys should not let anything get in the way of what they want to do because even if they fail
Football is a relatively dangerous sport. In the game, the whole body is open to taking shots from opposing teams every play, but the most dangerous area to be hit is the head. Hits that lead to players having their heads
Imagine it is a Friday night underneath the lights, in October, and you are walking into a stadium packed with fans cheering. But the only noise you can hear is the sound of your cleats hitting the pavement as you are marching up to the field, and the only thing you see is the other team and the end zone. It is such a stimulating feeling, it is unforgettable. Now, you may think I am talking about an American football game, but I am not. I am talking about a rugby match. Believe it or not, football derived from rugby. Differences are in rugby, there are no pads, the ball does not have laces, fifteen men to a side, and above all else, it is an international sport and it is safe compared to football. How come if it is safe, and it is a worldwide sport like soccer, why is it not a school sport like football is too many high schools and colleges across the country? Rugby needs to be a school sport not only because it is safe or it is international, but because it builds character in those that need support, teaches people how to work as team, and to expose what real brotherhood is.
In stadiums, parks and fields all across America, many youth participate in a journey through defeat, heartbreak, hard work, and success. Practicing for hours, rain or shine, to be able to snag that game winning touchdown in the back of the endzone. Although football comes with many risks and dangers, I strongly believe that kids and teens should be allowed to play football because it promotes leadership, teamwork, and requires significant amounts of exercise and cardiovascular activity, and other contact sports are just as dangerous.
“Imagine going out to eat and ordering a salad, only to have the waiter tell you that you may not have it, that you must have the soup instead. How would you feel? The choice between soup and salad is benign one, but it demonstrates a characteristic of human nature: we don’t like to be forced into decisions we’re capable of making ourselves. We resist compulsion. God has never approved of using force.” Sports shouldn’t be a required part of elementary education in the United States because everyone should have a chance to make a choice. It’s unfair to force someone to do something that he or she doesn’t like.
