Is The Electoral College Needed? Did you know that five times throughout US history the candidate with the popular vote has lost the presidential election? This has happened because our government has an electoral college. The electoral college is a system where people of a state vote for which candidate they want and depending on who the state votes for the members of the electoral college for that state put their votes in for the candidate the state wanted. The problem with this system is that the candidate can lose the popular vote in the election for president and still be elected because they got more electoral college votes. When the United States have presidential elections candidates usually spend a lot of time in small states and swing states because winning them gives you a big advantage. This is a problem because this means certain states have more power than other states. A example of this problem is that California has 55 electoral votes while wyoming has 3 but wyoming's electoral votes are far more important than california's. Another reason smaller states are more important is because in a state like wyoming they get a electoral vote for every 194,717 people while a state like california gets a electoral vote for every 705,454 people. And for these reasons small states have more power in a election than bigger states. The second reason the electoral college should be abolished is that it is a old and outdated system. The electoral college was created in 1787 and then later changed again in 1804 since that time the world has progressed a lot (History.com). The electoral college was created in a time where information wasn't readily available to everyone so the system helped a lot when picking the next president but now that information is available everywhere it seems to be a pretty useless function of our government.
