Should Drugs Be Decriminalized?

After taking this class I can have an educated discussion with people about the war on drugs. I do think drugs are bad and people should avoid it as much as possible. I personally avoid alcohol and tobacco and I am not particularly fond of tea, coffee or other caffeinated drinks. I believe in having a healthy lifestyle and I am particular about putting anything into my body. Since I am conscious about my own health I cannot recommend that other people jeopardize theirs. I would in fact warn those who are predisposed to addiction, like parents or family members struggling with addiction to avoid drugs but even then education is key and they should be aware of the risks. Just saying 'don't do it', is a scare tactic which might not be most effective. In an ideal world, drugs would not exist but unfortunately we are not living in an ideal world. Some people will always try drugs and some will get addicted irrespective of whether they receive education or not. However we can minimize risks and save lives by teaching people how to live with drugs safely. …show more content…

I think most people when arguing about drugs confuse decriminalization with legalization. Understandably, most people would be skeptical about legalization of drugs, assuming drugs would be allowed to be sold in supermarkets like alcohol and tobacco. I think it is critical to educate people what decriminalization means, what its implications are and how it would provide crucial help to people fighting their addiction. Rather than locking them up for long periods of time, the government can provide services for them so they can manage their addiction in a safe environment without fear of prosecution. I think this was one of the outcomes that the course was able to achieve, that highlighted not only the drug issues but also the policies that our government follows and how it can be
