“If writing is Thing, then censorship is No-Thing,” (Rushdie). Censorship takes away creativity from authors. It also takes away the power of the author to express their full imagination. Writers want to talk about creation, and censorship is anti-creation. When people are writing, they don’t like to think about what they should or shouldn’t be writing. They would rather let their imagination run free, but they cannot do that because censorship is stopping them from doing so. This transfers over to Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck’s book was censored because of the use of profanity and morbid and depressing themes. This book has been highly debated on whether it should be banned in schools.
Censorship is when a book is prohibited due to obscene behaviors. Books are often banned because of profanity, sexual themes or racial themes. Some examples of popular books that were banned or that people tried to ban include: To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies and Harry Potter. A lot of parents argue that the books have no use to children and that they shouldn’t be read. Other people argue that you could censor all

They find themselves in a small town working on a farm. It tells the story of the hardships that Lennie and George went through in an attempt to be successful. When times get tough at the end of the novel, George has no option but to shoot Lennie. The ending of the novel played a big factor of why it was banned. It wasn’t super graphic when Steinbeck explained what happened, but just the fact of what happened was what made people want to ban the book. The book was written by John Steinbeck, who was born in 1902 and died in 1968. Steinbeck was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature. He grew up in Salinas, California with no brothers or sisters. His mother was a writer, who of which sparked his love for
Have you ever read a book or an article in a magazine that you wouldn’t want your children to read? “A banned book is one that has been censored by an authority—a government, a library, or a school system. A book that has been banned is actually removed from a library or school system.” (Brogan Brunner)Some reasons people want books to be banned is because they have profanity, racism, murder, and sexism. Some reasons people don’t want books to be banned is because of the first amendment which is freedom of press and speech. They also think people should be able to read what they want. Some issues in Of Mice and Men are it has racial slurs and racism. It has a lot of profanity which some people don’t like to read and murder with euthanasia. Overall of mice and men should be banned from the schools.
People ban books for dumb reasons that make absolutely no sense. Another is dumb religious reasons. Ministers and educators challenged it (it being the wonderful wizard of oz) for its “ungodly” influence and for depicting women in strong leadership roles They banned the wizard of oz because it showed girls in a leadership role (what?).This is really important because they are banning a classic book because the princess was a thing that people got really people got upset with it. “Others accuse the novel of attacks on religion, the disabled and women.” Lord of the flies (“http://www.banned-books.org.uk/sections/corrosive”). Once again PC police have come again to shut down another book that is actually pretty good. Also once again imagination is not encouraged. Don’t ban books for religious reasons that are not valid. Finally racism (that is not racism). “"A review of the book in question shows it to include pervasive vulgarity and racially insensitive language,"(The Hate you Give) Hindt said.” The story is about the struggles of a black girl in a racist environment (wouldn’t this be considered anti-racist). They can basically just ban whatever book they want. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark
There are multiple reasons why a book can be banned or challenged. Book banning causes the removal of materials in schools and libraries due to “inappropriate” content. The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold, was banned due to sexual content and language.
Books that have shaped America are slowly starting to disappear. Many of the previous social norms have fallen out of fashion, and because of this reason numerous books are beginning to become banned. Blasphemy, racism, sex, and violence are all ethical reasons for books to be censored.
The book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is an amazing and educational book, but some people think it should be banned! In this book two migrant workers named George Milton and Lennie Smalls travel together in the 1930s looking for work. Lennie has a mental disability that causes him to act as if he was a child. George is Lennie’s friend that takes care of him and helps him with finding work. George and Lennie leave from a town called Weed to find work as ranch hands in the Salinas Valley. The men share the dream of owning a farm house and their own land some day. When they get their new jobs they meet the other workers named Candy, Slim, Carlson, Crooks, the bosses son named Curley, and Curley’s wife. Then their dream seem like it is closer than ever…until something makes it disappear completely. As you can see this book is very interesting, so i believe that this book should not be banned.
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck shouldn’t be banned and should be allowed to be read in classrooms that are 8th grade and above. Of Mice and Men is a superb example of what the youth of America should stray away from in the future, so no future generations will have to live like the characters George and Lennie do. Of Mice and Men hooks the reader at every turn and the reader also can learn from it. Although some disagree and believe it should be banned, there are many reasons why it shouldn't be. Of Mice and Men demonstrates the language that many Americans use, the history is realistic and accurate, and it displays the effects of peer pressure.
Censorship, as defined in the dictionary, is, in the case of a book, to take out things thought to be objectionable. Censorship is far more than that. This mere word prohibits us from all things
Banning a book on the basis of profanity is merely a superficial reason of those who wish to limit beliefs that do not coincide with their own. By excluding a novel from a high school curriculum in order to shelter students from profanity, is an attempt to do the impossible. Profanity is found everywhere. According to TV Guide, "Profanity is uttered once every six minutes on American primetime television...
John Steinbeck was born February 27th, 1902. He was born in Salinas, California. Steinbeck’s father was a hardworking man, and he worked several jobs to support John and his siblings. These jobs included managing a flour plant, and serving as a treasurer. His mother Olive Hamilton Steinbeck was a schoolteacher. Steinbeck had three sisters. He had a pretty happy childhood growing up for the most part Steinbeck was not the most outgoing person. He was really smart but he was shy....
Books are banned for many reasons but more times than not it is because of the sensitive information found within the novel that agitates the reader. As long as people have been able to develop their own opinions, others have sought to prevent them from sharing. At some point in time, every idea has ultimately become objectionable to someone. The most frequently challenged and most visible targets of such objection are the very books found in classrooms and public libraries. These controversial novels teach lessons that sometimes can be very sensitive to some but there is much more to challenged books than a controversial topic. What lies within these pages is a wealth of knowledge, such as new perspectives for readers, twisting plots, and expressions that are found nowhere else. For example, To Kill A Mockingbird, contains references to rape, racial content, and profanity that have caused many to challenge the novel in the first place. The book was banned from countless
Of Mice and Men is a book that should not be prohibited. This book has been used in classes for assignments and projects. The book does have foul language, but the kids have been exposed to these words, whether they have heard it at home or at school. According to Chicago Tribune, “Adolescents and preteens are swearing more publicly than ever, especially at school…” This is showing that kids are already cursing. When they are reading the book, the words are nothing new to them. They have already been exposed to these kind of words.
Steinbeck got the inspiration to write this book in the summer of 1922 through his experience at Spreckels Sugar Company Ranch. He worked there with Filipino and Mexican labor. The landscape of the book was familiar to where he worked. He worked in an oasis type river and renamed the location to a place called Soledad which meant solitude (Hays)...
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain, 1884. The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger, 1951. Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell, 1936. The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1925 (www.bannedbooksweek.org). All of the books mentioned in the last sentences were books that “shaped America,” and were in some way or another banned or expurgated by taking all of the explicit words, and content, out of them. In doing so, the people who made the decisions to ban the books, or otherwise take out the content, greatly decreased the viewpoints that the author was trying to conceive. I believe that, unless the reading is for children under the age of, say, 13, then books like the aforementioned ones above, should not be banned or censored at all. Sometimes you have a rare case, like mine, where kids skip a few grades, and are really ahead of their class, and still a little immature, but if they are in a certain grade, they should be allowed to read, and understand what the author was originally trying to portray before the “people who think they know best” go and censor the author’s initial intent.
This article addresses some of the reasons that censors attempt to remove books from the curriculum: Many censors feel that works are not age appropriate for students.
Hence, censorship is essential in society to eliminate discrimination on basis of race and gender, protect children, maintain stability and restore what censor sees as lost moral values. Censorship occurs when expressive materials like books, magazines, movies, videos, music or works of art are restricted to particular audiences based on their age or other characteristics. http://www.ala.org/oif/intellectualfreedeomandcensorship.html) Censorship is not a recent development. It wasn’t imposed properly or there weren’t strict regulations before.
