School is hard, but it is necessary to be successful in your future career.School can be hard especially when you have a different gender affecting your ability to learn. Boys and girls have been shown to achieve higher test scores when in a same gender class. Without the uneasiness of having an opposite gender in the same room, students could feel comfortable to share their thoughts freely. But will separating boys and girls in a classroom actually help students learn? Will it prepare them for their adult career?
When male and females are together in school, bullying can take place. Many boys believe that teasing girls while they are with their friends can help them become “the funny one,” but it leads to confidence issues with the girls. Girls have sensitive feelings and boys think they can disregard those feelings and call girls multiple names. Also, boys would not feel obligated to make fun of the girls so they can impress their friends. Getting a boy to be nice while he is with his friends is like a peaceful war. Is it possible?

Girls feel apprehensive to eat at lunch and also play in physical activities if there are boys around. Most girls feel too awkward to eat in front of guys because they are scared that they will get something stuck in their teeth or get food on their face. There could even be a reduction in fighting with same genders. Girls also feel comfortable enough to be able to play a sport because they know that no girls will judge them if they mess up. Students say that when gym class is unsegregated, the boys are rough and immature, and they do not want the girls to play with them. Because young boys are more active they often are disciplined, while girls are often quieter and naturally become a teacher’s favorite. On a more personal level, it has been my observation that up until the junior high level both boys and girls are actively engaged in sports, but once the boys start to get bigger, the adults in the society become apprehensive about allowing mixed gender play. I feel as though society has a tough time embracing the possibility that women might get hurt if they play sports. It is at this point in a student's career that a great division occurs, all of a sudden innocent games become strictly regulated and boys and girls are separated.
In the world of sports it started off that girls could never play sports and then in 1972 a public law called Title IX came to existence which allowed girls to play sports but not with boys. Today the question is asked should girls play on boys’ sports teams? One would think that girls should not play with boys on a sports team because boys are just naturally taller and stronger than women and they would dominate the girls in a fully contact sport. Another may think that if a girl is truly capable to play on an all boys’ sports team, then she should not be denied the opportunity to try out for an all boys’ team. Some other people may believe that sports at younger ages should remain co-ed because boys and girls body types are still similar, but once boys and girls are in high school sports should separate based on gender. Females and Males are equal but not in physical stature, having a girl on an all boys team will negatively change the dynamics/flow of a game, having the best girl player on an all boy’s team will hurt the girls’ sports teams. So sports should strictly stay separated between males and females.
There is a long history of single-sex schooling, in which males and females attend specific classes or schools only with members of their same sex. This separation of genders may be done for educational purposes or in combination with other factors, such as social interactions that occur between male and female students. There is some support for the idea that single-sex schooling can be beneficial, especially for outcomes related to academic achievement and more positive academic aspirations (Lee, 2008). Although, there are many benefits of children attending single-sex schools, evidence shows that sex segregation can also gender stereotyping and legitimizes institutional sexism (Kennedy, 2000).
However, having students in a co-ed setting is more realistic for our growing society today. Understanding and identifying that the opposite sex may cause a distraction while learning; however, having a diverse classroom where input from both genders can bring learning to a whole new level. By segregating students into a same sex class setting, this does not allow the opposite sexes to learn, grow and respect each other. This form of educational institution helps students to focus on their academics without the distractions of the other gender. Historical data from Harvard University and other institutions, suggests that single-gender schools are more beneficial to a students’ education than those of co-educational schools. (David Tyack and Elizabeth Hanslot, pg.14) Co-educational schools distract students from getting the most out of their education. The students are being distracted by the other gender, due to examples such as, sexual harassment and the inappropriate appearance and dress code of students. Single-gender schools can help teachers to gear their instruction to a specific gender, rather than generalizing it to please both genders. While co-educational schools can assist students to be interactive with the other gender, single-gender schools can be more beneficial towards a students’ education.
Sending a child to a gender based school, is a very big decision to make. The decision is so big, that looking at what research has to say about the topic could alter one’s decision to send their child to a gender based school. “Educators must apply different approaches in teaching make, and female students” (Gurian). This is said by Gurian, because he also believes that boys and girls learn differently. “Social pressures can be gentler and your child can learn at his own pace” (Kennedy).
I think that putting guys and girls on the same teams for track, golf, and tennis. Some sports that I think are unfair to put guys and girls on the same team are football, baseball, and boxing. Some sports that could go either way are soccer, basketball, and martial arts. Since girls don’t have testosterone like guys they don’t have the strength that guys do so they are not as strong and more fragile. I think if girls play with guys there would be way more injuries for both genders.
It seems that single-sex education perpetuates gender stereotypes and promotes gender bias among students (Taylor). Gender-separate education requires schools and teachers to create gender-oriented courses, facilities, and learning environment. As a result, sing-sex schools exacerbate sexist attitudes and “feelings of superiority toward women” (Guarisco). It is fair to argue that the best way to achieve gender equality is to promote rather than eliminate interaction among girls and boys. However, girls in the sex-mixed class receive less attention from teachers than boys, which may lead to gender bias. More precisely, boys always have disciplinary issues, such as interruption; teachers have to pay more attention to boys’ behaviors in order to proceed the lecture more smoothly. Girls may feel less important and supportive in male-dominated classes; boys may think that males are smarter and far superior than females. Single-sex schools can address both girls’ and boys’ issues of gender stereotypes directly and accordingly. Male students may be freer to engage in some activities they have not considered before in mixed schools. For example, boys feel pressure to follow some non-macho interests when girls stay around them; however, the all-boys schools eliminate their pressure toward gender stereotyping to pursue music, dance, and drawing. Single-sex schools would help boys explore and develop themselves. Also, girls in sex-separate schools show more confidence and power (Guarisco). They could receive full attention from teachers and express their opinions in science classes without worrying about the boys’ banter. They may realize that they are as important as boys. Many countries and people around the world have different thoughts on If male and females should play on co-ed sport teams. Females and males should be able to play on the same sports team if they want to. Coming from playing multiple different sports over the years. Females and males can both benefit from playing on each others sports teams. All of the sports I have played over the years for example Soccer, Lacrosse, Swimming, Track, and Dance only 2 have been co-ed and the rest separated. The two sports that weren’t separated were Swimming and Track which were co-ed in middle school but in high school swimming is separated. When I was apart of those two teams I felt like everyone always had a good time and the meets were always a blast. The team's overall were both undefeated so both male and female worked hard and worked good together.
Imagine your life with only members of your gender. Not all the time of course. Just during your school day or even part of your school day. Same sex classrooms would make that imagination your reality. Before you turn down the idea, because god forbid you go a few hours without seeing a cute boy take a moment to learn about all the benefits same sex schooling can provide. Most students are against same sex schools. They want to flirt with the cute guy in math or ask the shy girl in history for a pencil even if they already one. Same sex classrooms provide a multitude of benefits, because they promote better behavior, higher grades, improved self-esteem, and are able to cater to student’s needs.

However, Single sex schools are very bad because it affects children attitude, they will find difficulty in communicating with their colleagues in college as they were secluded and didn't interact with other sex in school. Boys and girls should know from a young age how to deal with the opposite sex, instead of facing that when they become adults, and don't have experience on what to do. Bullying is a major problem and needs to be prevented. A bully is defined as aggressive behavior or to harm a person repeatedly overtime. School bullying can start anytime from elementary to high school. Over 5.7 teens in the United States are involved in school bullying(about.com). Boys tend to be more physically bullied as girls are more prone to being bullied verbally. According to the National Conference of State Legislature, boys who are often bullied can be five times as likely to be more or severely depressed and four times more likely to be suicidal. Girls are three times more likely to be severely depressed and eight times more likely to be suicidal. Some children are afraid to go to school, which can lead to poor grades or lack of concentration. It is hard for students to focus at school when they are worried about their bully. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to school violence.
The teacher tossed a Styrofoam basketball to the outstretched arms of a fifth grade boy. Catching the ball was the incentive for the boys to point out missing conventions in a paragraph. The teacher projected a paragraph on the board with omitted punctuation for the students to add. The other boys in the class watched him as he went to the board to add the missing comma and then tossed the ball back to the teacher.
