Should Baseball Ban the DH?
The designated hitter rule has positively influenced Major League Baseball since the American League adopted it in 1973. Not only should it be upheld in the American League, but should also be adopted in the National League. The DH rule allows a designated hitter to bat for pitchers in the batting order.
One of the biggest reasons that the DH should be used is that pitchers can’t hit. Who would you rather see, Manny Ramirez, who had a batting average of .327 last season, or Randy Johnson, who only batted .127. The majority of baseball fans would rather see a batter that can hit the ball instead of a pitcher swinging and missing.
The commissioner is in favor of abolishing the DH, but there is one problem. “The problem is that the all-mighty players’ union loves the DH because it creates an extra roster spot and enables good hitters to hang on for several years after their prime.” If the players want the DH rule then we should keep it. Why get rid of something that the players don’t want to get rid of. Japan and the National League are the only two places not using the DH.
Another reason to keep the DH is that it does allow good hitters to keep playing baseball. Without the DH position, the careers of many great players would have been cut short. Hall-of-famer Eddie Murray and future hall-of-famers Harold Baines and Paul Molitor finished their careers as designated hitters. Eddie Murray and Paul Molitor were able to reach 3,000 hit plateau thanks to the DH rule, and as a result fans were able to watch them in action for years after they otherwise would have had to retire.
It’s almost certain that the Seattle Mariners’ Edgar Martinez, who is 40 and still hitting .331 this past season, would no longer be playing in the Major Leagues if the designated hitter rule did not exist. According to a 2002 Sports Illustrated article, “This man is an athlete, as pure a hitter as they come, and he still contributes to his team.” It is unfair to players like Martinez to abolish the DH rule.
Critics say that it takes away from the way the game is supposed to be played. The rule, actually brings out the pureness of the game. It lets the hitters concentrate on hitting and the pitchers on pitching.
When asked to name great hitters, fans would probably mention the likes of Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Ted Williams. It would not come as a surprise if they forgot to include the Georgia Peach, Ty Cobb, on their list. The reason for their forgetfulness stems from the era in which Cobb played. Beginning his career in 1905, Cobb played baseball through the period dubbed “the dead ball era.” During this era (1900-1919), players hit marginally fewer homeruns than players from other eras. The reason for this homerun shortage resulted from the baseball used at the time. Indeed, the ball had no life. Loosely wound, one baseball often served throughout an entire game. Moreover, larger ball fields also kept the homerun totals down (“1900-1919”). Legal pitches also included the spitball, a terrib...
Baseball has been of the longest living sports in our world today. The game started with the idea of a stick and ball and now has become one of the most complex sports known in our society. Several rules and regulations have been added to help enhance the game for everyone. Although baseball has endured several issues during its history and development of the game the game has still been a success throughout the world.
***Peter: You raise a good point. I didn't mean to downplay home runs. Instead, I was making it clear that 35 home runs are not as valuable as 35 stolen bases. Using last year's averages for the 30 major league teams, when Joe Player steals a base, he gets one of 103 steals. When John Player hits a bases-empty homer, he raises his team's average .00009, scores one of his team's 773 runs, one of its 738 RBIs and one of its 182 homers. As I said earlier, drafting a team of speedsters doesn't make much sense, but why not grab a 40-steal guy who can single-handedly jack you up five roto points? Besides, few basestealers are one-category guys anyway. Most are power-speed threats (30-30 guys) or score well in batting average, steals and runs.
Since the inception of the first Major League Baseball (MLB) game, played on May 4, 1871, bats made of wood have been the tradition in baseball. The creation of metal bats occurred in the 1920s, but not actually used in play until 1970 when they were introduced into Little League youth baseball. Even though all levels of players from children to professionals seemed to prefer the new metal bats, MLB prohibited their use. Safety, skill level of the players, cost, level of entertainment provided, and tradition are all arguments used in the controversy between whether Major League Baseball should allow metal bats or continue using wooden ones.

...as fulfilled part of its duty by banning Rose for over 20 years; it has failed to acknowledge his on the field contributions. MLB has the duty of honoring the greatest players in baseball and those who are record setters; clearly Pete Rose fits into both of these categories. As the holder of multiple MLB career records as well as being considered one of the greatest players ever, Pete Rose has clearly made his mark on baseball. Thus, it is MLB’s duty to honor him for his accomplishments. MLB must now fulfill its second duty and reinstate Pete Rose so he can be acknowledge for his on the field play. With Kantian ethics, MLB’s sense of duty to the game requires the punishment of Rose, as well as the acknowledgement of him in the hall. With the time spent banned MLB has fulfilled one duty and must now allow Pete Rose in the hall to fulfill their duty to the game.
These are mainly associated with pitching and hitting because these activities have the highest degree of chance, and fielding does not. When a player has a great home run, he will try to do the same thing he did prior to that home run. He may eat a taco or wear a long sleeve blue shirt, or wear dirty underwear. Clearly the rituals and superstitions of baseball do not guarantee anything in reality. However they do provide their believer a sense of control, and the added confidence they may need to
June 28, 2018. Alexander Cartwright’s new set of rules formed the basis for modern baseball. The rules included a diamond-shaped infield, the three-strike rule. And tagging runners by throwing balls at them was not allowed in his rules.
Derek Jeter, one of the greatest shortstops of all time, once said, “There may be people who have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do- and I believe that” (“Jeter”). Sometime later the same man also said, “Your image isn’t your character. Character is what you are as a person” (“Jeter”). Jeter was obviously a guy that believed in hard work all the time, but also realized that he had to be great off the field as well. There have been some spectacular shortstops in the history of baseball, but none greater than the likes of Barry Larkin, Derek Jeter, and Cal Ripken, Jr. They all changed the game in one way or another, but every single one of them had great leadership abilities, a knack for coming
Therefore, I urge you, for the sake of leveling the playing field in baseball, making the game more exciting, cleaning the name of the game, giving the fans more appreciation, and to give additional funding to MLB, to take into great consideration the proposal that I have presented to you, and realize the long lasting effects it will have on the game of baseball for years to come.
The Syracuse Chiefs are a minor league baseball team located in Central New York. The core of Chiefs’ games are composed of six components, including game form, players, fan behavior, equipment and apparel, venue, and personnel and process. The rules and techniques of baseball are what makes this sport differ from every other sport product. Over the years, the game of baseball has made several changes to its rules. In the early years of the game, batsman were allowed to request the pitch be thrown high or low. As time passed, the rules changed to creating a strike zone. This rule called for a higher level of skill in both the batters and pitchers, making the game more attractive to fans.
Over time, the importance of the All Star game has shifted greatly. It used to be played for the sole reason that fans could watch the best players in the league compete against each other on the same field. The outcome did not matter because the final score did not affect any team’s season. In 2003 there was a change to a rule in the All Star game. It was decided that the winning team, either the American League or the National League, would be granted home field advantage for the World Series.1 The new rule triggered a lot of controversy and it is still being debated to this day. There are some people that agree with the change and there are some people that disagree. The Major League Baseball season is 162 games long and I believe

Major League Baseball is no different. The league has also become very active in the IT world. It is used in almost every single aspect of the game, as well as the business. If you look back at baseball through the ages, it is easy to see just how much it has changed. The trick for Major League Baseball was they knew they had to advance to keep up in today’s world.
One reason for not banning dodgeball is kids get excited when they play. this activity is great for children. When children get excited in a physical activity they start to work out more and more and get more exercise. Working together is good because they can work as a team to succeed on taking down the other team. The reason why working together is good because you can have good relationships with those children and maybe later hang out with a person you probably never saw before and make more friends.
