The name of the book, Winner of the Pulitzer Prize is called To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. is very brave. When a group of men, who wanted to hurt Tom came to Atticus to talk. They didn’t want to hurt him, they wanted to hurt Tom, but if Atticus didn’t move out of the way they would’ve hurt Atticus. Jem, Scout, and Dill was at the jailhouse where the group of men were with Atticus. When Atticus saw the kids he had horror in the look of his face. “ In the midst of this strange essembly, Atticus stood trying to make Jem mind him. “I ain’t going,’’ was his steady answers to Atticus threats, request, and finally, “Please Jem take them home.” (Lee 204). This shows shows that Atticus was still brave enough to stand onto his feet and try to convince Jem to go home in front of everybody. As it goes for the jailhouse, A group of men came to Atticus and threatens him for defending Tom Robinson. Atticus stands up for him saying wait for the truth to be told. “Link that boy might go to the chair, but he’s not going till the truth’s told.’’ Atticus voice was even. “ and you know what the truth is.’’ There was a murmur among the group of men, made more ominous when Atticus moved back to the bottom front step and the men drew near to him.” (Lee 195). This shows that Atticus had to be true to himself and be brave to the the group of men and use his strongs words to defend Tom. I really meant that Atticus really cares for this black man. The second reason Atticus should take a stand because he had Integrity. It was at the trial, and it was for Atticus’s turn to speak to Mayella. As the trial was starting, Atticus started to call Mayella, “ma’am and miss,” for showing his politeness, but Mayella didn’t like it. “That’s just Mr. Finch’s way,” he told Mayella. “We’ve done business in this court for years, and Mr. Finch is always courteous to everybody. He’s not trying to mock you, he's trying to be polite that’s just his way.” (Lee 243). This shows that Atticus just wanted ti be polite to Mayella, like he does to everyone. He wanted to make her feel better. Whenever Atticus would walk by Mrs. Dubose’s porch, he would always be polite, even though how rude she is to everybody. He saw good in her in a different way people wouldn’t understand. “ I never heard Atticus say like a picture of what. He would tell her the courthouse news, and would say he hoped with all his heart she’d had a good day tomorrow. He would return his head, swing me to his shoulders in her very presence, and we would go home in the twilight. It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns, and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived.” (Lee 134). This shows that Atticus was still going to be the same person at home and in public, showing respect indoors and outdoors. Some might say Atticus should not stand up for Tom Robinson.
Atticus the lawyer wants to support Tom Robinson a black man, but people in Maycomb dislikes his decision, so does his family. There are all afraid he’ll get hurt from people who don’t like Atticus defending Tom. As again a mob of men came to Atticus threatening him about defending Tom. To Tom it looked like they wanted to hurt Atticus, and Jem is scared about Atticus. “ They were after you, weren’t they?” Jem went to him. “They wanted to get you, didn’t they?”...Then he said gently, “No son, those were our friends.”...I sought Jem and found him in his room, on the bed deep in thought. “Have they been at it?” I asked. “Sort of she won’t let him alone about Tom Robinson. She almost said Atticus was disgracin’ the family. Scout… I’m scared.” “Scared of what?” “Scared about Atticus. Somebody might hurt him.” (Lee 196-197). This shows that Atticus might get hurt for supporting Tom Robinson too hard. He’ll get hurt from a mob who already has warned him. However, Atticus shows Integrity to all people. He shows respect to everyone, either if their white or black. Atticus wants to help Tom Robinson and stand in the courtroom in front of everyone to show that he’s doing the right thing helping a black man, this shows how brave Atticus
is. Atticus should take a stand for Tom Robinson because he is brave and has Integrity. Atticus is not like other people in Maycomb. He will ensure to do anything and find a way to a person. Atticus shows Integrity to all people, he will show respect to everybody indoors and outdoors, doesn’t matter if their white or black. He defends Tom Robinson in a courtroom full of black and white people to show that what he’s doing is a right thing to do, to help a black man. Therefore, it shows how brave Atticus is. Atticus is a strong man in the book, To Kill A Mockingbird. He’s done an incredible and inspiring thing defending a black man, However people thinks he’s disgracing his family and doing something wrong, that might get him hurt, but Atticus still keeps his head high and shows such bravery in this journey.

Atticus Finch, a lawyer and single parent in a small southern town in the 1930's, is appointed by the local judge to defend Tom Robinson, a black man, who is accused of raping a white woman. Friends and neighbors object when Atticus puts up a strong and spirited defense on behalf of the accused black man. Atticus renounces violence but stands up for what he believes in. He decides to defend Tom Robinson because if he did not, he would not only lose the respect of his children and the townspeople, but himself as well.

To Kill a Mockingbird, a book written by Harper Lee, is a tale about Atticus Finch, a lawyer and father of two children, who is assigned to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape. During the events of the book his children, Jem and Scout, are taught virtues from Atticus. He taught them that one should be kind to your enemies by being sympathetic to Mrs. Dubose, a wicked old lady. He teaches them that one should always defend what is right by defending Tom Robinson, and that you should defend others from persecution by helping prevent Boo Radley from being brought to court. Effectively, he taught these valiant virtues by living them and maintaining them amongst persecution. Atticus confidently follows God even though he suffered for it.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a strong novel filled with innocence and human dignity. The most interesting and emotional part of the novel is the trial between an “untouchable” in the society and an innocent black man. Despite the overwhelming blatant evidence that the black man was innocent, the jury declared him guilty due to the extreme racism that happened throughout the course of the story. The most outstanding person in the trial is Atticus Finch, the defender assigned to defend the black man, Tom Robinson. Atticus’s actions in the trial proved to be intelligent and powerful, and a valuable clue to the outcome of the trial and story.
Atticus shows great compassion and tolerance when he stands up for the Negroes. He stands up and represents Tom Robinson because he believes that everyone should be treated equally in the court of law. He knows that because Tom was a Negro there would be a slim chance of winning. That fact never discouraged him though because he says that the main reason he is representing Tom is because, ' if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature'; (75). He recited a speech, which clearly states that Tom Robinson is not guilty. In that speech he says, 'our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal'; (205). He believed that prejudice and stereotyping is wrong and he tries to teach these morals to Scout and Jem.
Atticus should not give up his character, parental authority, and position in town to please the racist beliefs of others in Maycomb. Atticus cannot stand racism and says, "As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash. " Atticus should take a stand and defend Tom Robinson, to treat his children with valuable lessons and to keep his conscience clean. For these reasons, it does make sense for Atticus Finch to defend Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
Towards the end of To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus decides to represent a colored man by the man of Tom Robinson, who is being accused of raping Mayella Ewell, Bob Ewell’s daughter. Atticus believes that Tom is innocent, but he does not think that Tom will be found not guilty because of they way the townsfolk treat colored people. They treat them like dirt; like they are worth nothing. Atticus went ahead and represented Tom despite the fact that he knew the townsfolk would call himself and his children names and treat them disrespectfully. Even Scout’s relative Francis said rude things about them. “‘I guess it ain't your fault if Uncle Atticus is a nigger-lover besides, but I'm here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family-...’ ‘Just what I said. Grandma says it's bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he's turned out a nigger-lover we'll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb agin. He's ruinin' the family, that's what he's doin'.’” Atticus set a good example for Scout and Jem. He had a difficult decision to make, but he chose what he thought was
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is ultimately a story of despair, ignorance, and hate. The tittle itself portrays a profound message of killing which does not convey a message of hope but rather a connection with despair and despondency. Throughout the novel instances of shattered innocence, injustice, and abiding by the greater opinion have added to the case of despair and dejection. This is shown through themes, matters and the characters throughout the course of the novel.
Atticus was incredibly courageous taking on tom Robinsons case against the prejudice of Macomb County and he shows incredible courage when he says, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try and won." He wants the people of Maycomb to hear the truth about Tom Robinson, "That boy may go to the chair, but he's not going till the truth's told." Chapter 15, Page 146. He was against the whole white community including his own sister practically said that he was a disgrace to his family Atticus tells scout when she asks him why he is taking the case he says "For a number of reasons. The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.

It is true that Atticus would lose the thoughtful reputation that the town has given him. When Miss. As the court cases ends and Tom is declared guilty and the blacks do what they can do to show their respect to Atticus. “Miss Jean louise stand up your father 's passing” (ch.21, pg.283) Atticus has lost the case and many friends that day. Atticus changed the racist society of Maycomb by defending Tom Robinson in his trial. By acting as Tom's defense Atticus, an influential member of his community, is standing up for an oppressed group in his society. In the quote ." . . If I didn't take this case (Scout) then I wouldn't be able to hold my head up, I wouldn't be about to tell anyone what to do, not even you and Jem." the reader can understand that Tom's case is significant to Atticus. He knows that it will shape his community, that a serious change will be a result from the trial, and if he did not accept the trial no one else in Maycomb would help Tom and the rest of the African-Americans in the community. Atticus also changed his community by standing up against the majority and defending a man he knows is innocent. In the quote " Link, that boy might go to the chair, but he's not going till the truth's told . . . and you know what the truth is" Atticus is facing a mob of his peers (Lee 148). The reader can conclude the he is willing to risk his own safety and reputation to bring justice to the trial, no matter who is in the way. Atticus shows great compassion towards the blacks and makes sacrifices by defending Tom, which is another way he helps change his community. His compassion is displayed in the quote " (Courage is) when you know you licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win but sometimes you do" (116). Atticus was going to see his case all the way through, if the result was positive or negative, under any circumstance.
