Should Athletes Be Allowed to use Performance Enhancing Drugs? Athletes are some of the most admirable, respected, and fascinating beings in the world. They gain the hearts of fans by not only being entertaining, but displaying physical excellence on a consistent basis and performing at high levels in front of anxious crowds. From Michael Jordan to Michael Phelps, there are plenty of athletes who’s journey and dominance in a particular sport connect people in a way only sports could. Would you look at these athletes any different if they used a substance that supposedly enhanced their physical performance? A substance that was meant to help them do what we all love to watch and gamble over. There has been an issue in modern sports about this. More and often there is news about a player having their statistical milestones be deemed invalid, or even obvious Hall of Famer level players being left out because of allegations of using performance enhancing drugs. This leaves us with a great question. Should athletes be allowed to use performance enhancing drugs? Although PEDs may seem like a relatively new issue, athletes have been using substances to enhance performance since the …show more content…
time of the original Olympic Games. It used to be somewhat of a norm amongst high level athletes, and it definitely wasn’t considered cheating. There have been all sorts of drugs used to help athletes, from cocaine to HGH. Only in the 1970’s did it become known as unfairly beneficial to competitors, and dangerous. In 1975, anabolic steroids were officially banned by the International Olympic Committee. The US Anti-Doping Agency, formed to regulate drug use in Olympic sports, wasn’t made until 2000. Other sports organizations and leagues soon followed suit. There have been hundreds and hundreds of cases where Olympians and other pro athletes have lost medals and titles because of evidence of sometimes just very faint amounts of a banned PED. For instance, Martini Hingis, a former number one ranked tennis player and five-time grand slam champion, tested positive for cocaine in Wimbledon and was banned from tennis for two years. She retired from the game, swearing she had never used the substance. The amounts of cocaine found in her urine were so small, they would have passed a U.S Military drug test. There are other cases like Mark McGuire and Barry Bonds, two Hall of Fame level baseball players who had their whole legacy tarnished and stripped from them because of them admitting to using some sort of performance enhancing drug. Ken Caminiti, the 1996 National League MVP winner, claimed that during his career he was sure that at least 50% of Major League baseball players use steroids. Of all the athletes that have been criminalized or have their great careers discredited over banned substances, there seems to be a reoccurring theme. They all say they would still have accomplished those things without the drugs. I agree, and as a college athlete myself, I see that to reach those type of levels in a sport requires things that no drug could ever do to you. This is one reason I believe performance enhancing drugs should be allowed. PED’s would also be more properly used if they were legal and regulated, which wouldn’t make them unfair at all. When discussing what’s fair and what’s not, it is important to consider other aspects of athletic development, such as training, coaching, practice facilities, etc. Every athlete doesn’t get the same coaching; which athletes would agree is monumental in a player’s success. Every athlete doesn’t get the same training, which is a big way these athletes become who they are. None of these are regulated or banned. If I have an experienced coach or trainer whose won championships or has worked and developed other great players, I would have an obvious advantage over someone who learns their skill from someone that never even played that sport at a high level. If I have access to a world class facility with all sorts of training tools and a weight room, I’ll at least have a little advantage over someone who can only practice their skills a few times a month. Fact is, the playing field has never been level when it comes to sports. The notion that everybody has the same chance at winning is a misunderstanding. If anything, the legal use of PED’s would do nothing but help even it out. Another misconception about performance enhancing drugs is that they somehow make you win.
This is completely false; performance enhancing drugs are not magic. They may help improve your body in terms of muscle, but that is a very little piece of the puzzle when it comes to having success is a sport. Being good at a sport requires skill, focus, mental strength, composure, hours on hours of training, some natural talent, and several other things you can’t obtain by taking some pills. If PED’s were legal, they would be good for minor performance and body improvements, that would help athletes in ways that would only make the games more competitive and entertaining for fans. But there isn’t a drug on this earth that will turn an average player into a great one off the sheer effects of a
PED. Many people against performance enhancing drugs would say that they are unsafe and do more damage than good. It’s true, athletes sneaking PED’s from unauthorized dealers and taking improper dosages can be very dangerous. Legalizing them would change that. There would be professionals subscribing to PED’s to the athletes who are more informed on how they should be taken. This way athletes stay safe while also legally improving their bodies to their liking. It just doesn’t make sense for athletes to be banned from performance enhancing drugs. As long as they have been used, PED’s have only been a small element in making the sports world better. If we are concerned about maintaining equality throughout athletics, then PED’s are one thing that would bridge the gap. And to those concerned about the nature of the sport. Let’s face it, there is only so much a drug can do. Being a great player in any sport requires a lot more than what PED’s cold ever offer. Let’s look to change the stigma behind performance enhancing drugs, and try to prevent any more hard working, talented athletes from having their careers tarnished because of a teeny bit of help.
Performance enhancing drugs affect so many people that don’t even realize it. Fans of the game, coaches, university leaders and of course athletes are the major groups of people that can be affected the most from the usage of performance enhancing drugs. Numerous studies have stated that an athletes drug use in sport could be credited to a complex interaction of personal and environmental factors (Judge). Athletes hold themselves to high standards for themselves or maybe even family members they must provide for. Athlete will do whatever it takes to strive in their sport because in most cases personal success can lead to better opportunities such as the National Football League or maybe even the National Basketball Association. Overall, individuals can be affected in a positive manner through the use of performance enhancing drugs. Furthermore, the use of performance enhancing can do nothing but help athletes. Also, some college athletes need performance enhancing drugs more than others. Not every athlete comes from a well provided family and knowing that can plaque athletes to where they’ll do whatever it takes to be successful. With this in mind it would totally be unfair if only one or a couple of athlete used enhancing drugs however if every athlete were granted the right to use performance enhancing drugs there
For those who've never heard of the term PED's, Performance enhancing drugs are any supplements that are considered to allow one perform better in their respective sports ,such as anabolic steroids and HGH( Human Growth hormones). The effects of these supplements can range from expediting muscle to increasing one's stamina. PEDs began to become the center of controversy when the I.O.C set up a medical commission to oversee the fight against doping, which ultimately lead to the ban of PED's in professional sports. Stemming off from the I.O.C...
Performance enhancing drugs are not fair in sports. First off, they are a form of cheating. Most athletes work in the weight room and sacrifice their time. They work hard to use their natural talents and abilities, PED’s give the players an undeserved and unfair edge over his or her peers. “It is not fair to those that are naturally talented or work hard to remain in shape for another to come in and take the spotlight because they have decided to take the easy route” says a individual from Debate.Org. Along with giving the player a trump card, so to speak, it gives the whole team an advantage. Therefore, the whole team or organization is now cheating! “Hard workouts can not have the same benefits as PED’s, this makes the users have an advantage.”
The use of performance enhancing supplements has long played a role in athletics, especially after the utilization of drug testing was introduced during the 1972 Olympics.
Finally, Performance enhancing drugs will help the athletes out but in the long run it’s not good for the human body. My main reason for this topic is that doping in sports shouldn’t be allowed because not everyone wants to put their body in danger knowing they want to be a better player but they know it wouldn’t be good in the long run. For example, Dr. Pipe There is large numbers of case reports of premature cardiovascular disease and stroke in individuals who have used anabolic steroids. Later on in life when they get older it starts to tear down the body and people have problem walking and just doing everyday things.
...quences to be greater. Performance enhancement drugs are always going to be around, but if we don’t get a control on it now, the effect it could have years down the road could be much larger than it is today (Jonathan Finnoff 293). People are only getting smarter and with that the drugs are going to become more effective and stronger than ever before (294). Both professional and non-professional athletes are turning towards PED’s as a way for them to perform better. This act isn’t only wrong, ultimately it is classified as cheating in which can have a major effect on human bodies during times of performance and also in the future. The future of sports is only going to continue to grow and athletes are going to become better, but let it happen naturally and not because you have popped or injected an illegal substance, in which is banned by he World Anti-Doping Agency.
Have you ever wondered how some athletes have gotten so good at a certain sport? Have you ever thought about what they did in order for them to get this good? For some the answer is simple; workout and train. But for others the answer is different; the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. There are some people that argue that steroids should be legalized and allowed in professional sports. Other people argue that steroids should not be allowed. Today I am going to state my opinion and justify my reason. Steroids should not be allowed in professional sports because it can be very dangerous to the athlete’s health, it is a way to gain and un-fair advantage and it can be dangerous in both social and physical aspects.
Every athlete dreams of becoming the best player in their sport. For most athletes, this dream was created in their childhood watching their favorite player perform at great levels to achieve success. Most athletes will stop at anything to achieve success, even if that means breaking the rules. An athlete whether the biggest, fastest, or strongest, will always look for something that will give them and extra edge over everybody else, even if that means performance enhancing drugs. With new records being broken day by day, I believe performance-enhancing drugs should be legal in all professional sports.
In sports many people think it is ok to use Performance Enhance Drugs to be the best player of all time.Performance Enhance Drugs are substances used to improve any form of activity performance in humans. For example, Bruce Irvin the defensive end with the seattle seahawks, and Daryl Washington the linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals. It is not just football players , baseball players also like, Cody Stanley from the St. Louis Cardinals. Many people use them, but the end up getting caught and suspended from playing. You are basically cheating your way to fame.People should not use drugs in a sport to become better because,These drugs have an effect on having a long term of health, could lead to overdose, and if you get caught you most
Many Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition can date back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher and recover at an increased pace. Many athletes are pressured into using PEDs by coaches or managers and are not thoroughly educated the harmful health issues that can come along with taking performance-enhancing drugs. A rising issue is if performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports. I believe that in any professional sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes should continue to be banned because this rule will help to keep athletes from abusing these harmful drugs.
...t these drugs are catastrophic and cause so many diseases and sicknesses that should not happen to an athlete. Athletes will be looked at as superheroes and children would not want to idolize a player that got to where he is because he did drugs. A child wants to look up to a player that beat the odds and worked harder than everyone else. If Performance Enhancing Drugs were legalized and allowed in all professional sports, there would be a lot of deaths, and player that have diseases caused by the drugs they took. Also High school and college players would begin to take it because they would feel like that is the only way to get to the pros. And lastly players would hurt themselves and their teammates and fellow players. PED’s have a lot of potential but not yet. There are too many health defects and we do not want our “heroes” to die from a disease caused by drugs.
Performance Enhancing Drugs All of the debate and information about performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) leaves people curious about the way these drugs affect one's body. The competitive urge to win is already big for most serious athletes. PEDs creates extra unfair competition, health risks and unfair advantages. The use of these drugs is becoming more common. Performance enhancing drugs should be illegal for athletes and others to use.
In all professional sports in the United States, the use of PEDs are prohibited. However, there is only one acceptation to that rule. If an athlete is injured, prescriptions to certain drugs which are used in recover are allowed. These drugs may consist of certain chemicals that enhance muscle grow. Some athletes have used this to their advantage and have got prescriptions to these drugs for their own personal benefits, will other athletes are using it for recreational purposes. This, however, is not the only way to obtain PEDs; there are also other ways such as buying them from an underground market. Athletes with the intention to cheat will take the risk of using PEDs, since if they are successful they will achieve fame and money.
Drugs and Athletes Drugs have became a major problem within athletes. There are two different types of drugs athletes are using: recreational drugs and performance enhancing drugs. Athletes ranging from high schoolers to professionals and olympians are all using these drugs. In my opinion I feel as if you are an athlete you should not be allowed to use any type of drugs. I believe even if they say the drug might make you faster or make you perform better it is still hurting or tearing down your body.
Many people believe that drug use in professional athletics is not a serious problem, however it is more widespread and serious than people think. In professional athletics the use of drugs is looked upon as somewhat of a serious problem, but is also very discrete and low key. Every once in a while one might see a prominent figure in a certain sport being reprimanded for the use of some outlawed drug, however this is just one of the many who happened to get caught. Athletes today seem to find no moral problem with using performance-enhancing drugs, or in other words cheating. Also many of them feel that because they are "stars" there should be no repercussions for their illegal activity.
