Shot Put as an Interesting Sport
Throwing events in track and field have become very popular with high school and middle school students over the past few years. Shot put is the most recognized throwing event of them all. In the event the participant attempts to throw a metal ball as far as they can. Competitors take their put from inside a seven foot circle into a field marked with boundaries referred to as sectors. Many athletes who are interested in throwing, might enjoy the chance to throw, but do not know where to start.
There are two technical views to throwing the shot put: the spin and the glide. Both of these techniques have the participant use the ring to gain momentum and then put the ball into the field. The common factor between these two forms is that they both end up in a position referred to as the standing position or the power position. Learning this position is the perfect place for a beginner to start. The following steps describe how to execute a standing position to a right handed thrower. The same steps will apply to left handed throwers, but the relative directions will be reversed.
To begin the throw, athletes must learn proper placement of the shot put in the hand. To start, hold the right hand out as if you were giving someone a high five. Keep the fingertips toward the sky and the hand flat. Place the shot on the bridge of the hand. The implement should sit on the knuckles that separate the finger and the palm. For the best support of the ball, keep the fingers as close as possible with the thumb toward the back of the ball. Shot put technique is an unnatural feeling which our bodies need time to get used to. Adapting a well planed lifting regime will also help out in the long run. Exercises that work on explosiveness and quick twitch muscles are best.
Shot put is a great sport that many can enjoy. Whether you are throwing as recreation or as a serious, professional athlete, throwing the shot put can be pleasurable and entertaining. For years it was thought that the golf swing was a solid piece of movement without any differentiating variables. Vast expansion in technology over the last 20 years has produced more information on the biomechanics of the golf swing. “ Golf Biomechanics applies the principles and technique of golf mechanics to the structure and function of the golfer in an effort to improve the golf technique and performance” (Hume P., Keogh J., and Reid D. 2005) Biomechanics, “The scientific discipline that applies mechanical principles and to understanding movement.” (Hume P., Keogh J., and Reid D. 2005) allows scientists to observe a golfer’s swing to near milliseconds to the point of impact. This is much more precise to previous measurements used such as video recordings, outlines, etc. Understanding how the swing works by breaking down the movements within the swing through visual aids emphasize the opportunity for a better swing and in turn, better golf. Studies of biomechanics within the golf swing have shown the sequential separation from torso to pelvis, disproving the original theory of a solid swing with continuous motion known as the X-factor. Before understanding how the biomechanics of the golf swing works with the X-factor, the basics of the swing must be established.
Golf is a game of honor. The furthest ball from the hole must be hit first to try and get it in. In match play, if the a player gets a double par they must pick up the ball and move on to the next hole. In golf, a player compete against an opponent to see who can hit the ball in the hole, the least amount of strokes. The athlete must endure mild to intense workouts to become good at the sport. The most important aspect to work on in golf, is the swing. The athlete must focus on their golf swing to perform optimal swing mechanics. This is because the players consistency for 18 holes “depends on a stable golf swing” (Pedersen). While swinging a club, a person can work at least 16 different muscle groups in their body, so training these muscle groups will help their overall ability. When one throws a baseball properly they are using there entire body to generate a large force to propel the baseball. A general throwing position starts with a person rotated 90 degrees from there target with there throwing arm 180 degrees from the target and parallel to the ground. The person then starts rotating their body back towards their target while there throwing arm starts bending until it is almost 90 degrees to their elbow, while the arm is bending at the elbow the throwing arm is rotating such that the arm rotates back almost 180 degrees from the target. Meanwhile the person is leaping forward with the leg that was initially pointed at the target while there other leg is planted into the ground. The person is bending at their waist and the other arm is rotating into their body. Around the point where the driving leg strikes the ground the throwing arm is rotating foreword at a tremendous angular speed and the person lets go of the ball. At the point where the ball is let go the persons body pulls the planted leg forward and the throwing arm finishes its motion towards the driving leg.
Broer was the first to call attention to the similarity of movement patterns used in seemingly dissimilar activities such as the baseball pitch, the badminton clear, and the tennis serve. Objective evidence of such similarities between throwing and striking activities within each of the three major upper-extremity patterns; overarm, sidearm and underarm. The representative activities from these categories across throwing patterns also showed great similarity in the muscular action of the lower extremity. Atwater distinguished between the overarm and sidearm throwing patterns in terms of the direction in which the trunk laterally flexed. When lateral flexion occurred away from the throwing arm, and overarm pattern was used; lateral flexion toward the throwing arm indicated a sidearm pattern. The underarm patter is distinguished by motion predominantly in a sagittal plane with the hand below the waist. Each pattern involves a preparatory movement referred to as a backswing, or windup, followed by the establishment of a base of support prior to the initiation of the force phase and ending in the follow-through. The base of support in the direction of the force application; forward and backward is a distinguishing feature of skill level. It has been well documented that more highly skilled individuals have longer strides. Once the base has been established, the more proximal segments begin the force application phase while the more distal segments complete the backswing.

In his follow through, his arms have already completed their rotation. The last movement should be pronation of the right arm which allows a full follow through. Matt’s right arm is is not supinated upon contact therefore he is allowed little pronation in his follow through. His swing ends with chest and abdomen not fully rotated. This causes problems. When Matt’s chest and abdomen do not complete their rotation his arms can’t complete their follow through. This can cause the right shoulder and latisimus dorsi to stretch even further and can lead to strains in those muscles. In game type situation the chest and abdomen not fully rotating will affect the power of the swing, and quickness of the batter’s start towards first base.

A sport that many people spend their whole lives playing or watching used to not be exactly what is today. To start off, Now, we come to the tee-box where we put our stretching and breathing into effect creating the positive mentality, followed by a few quick practice swings. You then tee-up the ball, making sure the ball is lined up with the center of the face of the club. Then, you line up your shot and swing away, sending the ball flying down the middle of the fairway, creating a sense of euphoria. Next, we approach our second shot, making sure to choose the correct club according to the distance from the green. Once again, you line up your shot and swing, letting the ball coast and land on the green, as close to the hole as you possibly could. Now, comes the trickiest part which is reading the green. You grab your putter, then step back and squat, all the time trying to visualize the ball path. You, determine then were you should line up your putt depending on the break which is in the ball path. It is a game that takes time and effort to master, but can prove to be a great, relaxing sport that anyone of all ages can play.
When I was younger, I’d always worry about not being able to reach an object or be able to score a goal in sports. Especially because of my short height, I’d have to find creative ways in order to achieve these things. Projectile motion is just a fancy way of describing the efforts I had to go through in order to throw a basketball into the hoop at a certain height, or hit a golf ball at a certain angle in order to aim it.
