When examining On the Rainy River by Tim O’Brien from a reader-response perspective it becomes clear that contrary to popular belief courage does not come from engaging yourself in dangerous situations, it comes from not letting anyone come between you and your morals and beliefs. O’Brien found peace when he fled, and he felt miserable, like a coward when he caved in and went to war. Through careful analysis, my mind interprets the text in a way that shows how you are not brave for doing what you are forced to do.
Thank you Viola for your detailed comments about the HUAC committee activities that created a devastating situation for the film industry. The issue with communistic events indeed interfered with the lives of many and destroyed the careers of actors, especially those who firmly refused to cooperate with that committee. The film Spartacus is one of the most successful films in the history of Universal Studios not only in terms of box office appeal, but it also received six Oscar nominations and was accredited for breaking the Hollywood blacklist. This film was based on Howard Fast's novel, which narrates the story of professionals who refused to collaborate with HUAC committee officials.
Here, Lt. Cross has burned the letters and photographs of Martha. This quote reveals much about not only Jimmy Cross, but also the other soldiers. Jimmy had been using the fantasy of Martha as an escape from the harsh realities of war. However, he became so engrossed with the fantasy of Martha that he started to neglect his duties as a leader. As a result of Jimmy’s negligence, Ted Lavender dies. Jimmy feels guilty, and decides to burn all the things related to Martha. However, Cross realizes he cannot make the guilt disappear by burning it. Even though the burning was just a gesture, it shows that Cross is ready to take responsibility of his soldiers and be a better leader. The quote is important because it conveys the adversity soldiers face when trying to deal with the realities of the war and the fantasies of comfort after the war soldiers dream of. O’Brien is trying to tell the readers that soldiers find the actuality of war quite obfuscated.
The short story, “The White Umbrella”, illustrates the story of a Chinese family. The mom works a lot to give the kids nice things.. The theme of the story is that all good things come at a cost. The author conveys the theme in a lot of ways. These ways include repetition, imagery, and action that the main characters take.
"No-no-no!" Allie cried out in anguish. She took Jay's hand, more to keep her steady than for comfort, then struggled to her feet, pulling Jay with her.
"I'm immobile from the waist down," she says calmly, she sees him start to panic.

In this essay, we will explore a couple films made in the last decade which were structured over a heavy infrastructure of paranoia and conspiracy themes. Often times, these movies feature one individual who daylights a controlling, malevolent force, often by a government agency or a small group of cunning plotters. Then, the protagonist will attempt, often with success, to destroy or interrupt the opposing conspirators. From the anti-masonic movement at the end of the eighteenth century to the McCarthy witch-hunt in the last century, we see that the conspiracy thinking has infiltrated popular culture. It appears in films since the cold war and continues in today’s hit movies, whether comedy or drama.
Cynthia kneeled over Allison's body with her face missing. ¨Cynthia what the fuck are you doing,¨ Luke screamed. Cynthia turned her head slowly, her bloodshot eyes
“Yeah,” she whispered. Rubbing her temples and starting to feel the floodwaters rush over her toes she almost wished he was there to knock her out again. “Right,” Lily said, remembering Rick had hit her. More than once if remembered correctly.
