Is plagiarism worth the risk of being known as the student with no academic honesty? Meaning when a student enters a room the teacher is automatically focusing on that students assignments because the student is known for cheating or plagiarizing. Plagiarism is the action of copying others’ work that is not your own and saying it is. Plagiarism can be likened to the example of Dylan stealing Brads valentines card, and giving it to Sally. Any type of plagiarism that is used can lead to suspension, firing, or expulsion. Research discusses the consequences of plagiarism by stating, “The consequences of plagiarism could seriously endanger your academic career because your record will follow you: should you be compelled to leave your course of study, you will find it extremely difficult to obtain a place elsewhere because no college or university will want a student who has proven themselves to be dishonest and unworthy”.(ScanMyEssay) These consequences become negatively impacted on your life, especially when trying to find a job or applying to a university. Plagiarism can be committed in several ways. The writer may willfully commit this crime or may do so unintentionally. With the advent of the Internet, and the dissemination of copious amounts of information online, cases of plagiarism are now increasing. Computers have enabled lazy students, workers and even lecturers to copy information from web pages or electronic books. The danger here is that in some cases, they may reuse or incorporate chunks of information into their work without giving credit to the online reference source at all.
The impact of plagiarism can be a self-destructive for a student. On the other hand, plagiarism may cause an instructor to feel betrayed and disrespected by a student.
In order to properly learn more about plagiarism, it is important to appreciate the process of distribution and creation of ideas in the university. All knowledge is developed from preceding knowledge. As we read, revise, execute, research, and collect perspectives, we are building on other people’s thoughts. While drawing on other peoples thoughts and ideas, we manage to develop our own. In this base therefore, students should not shy away from using the work of others. Plagiarism, or the unaccredited use of another's work or ideas, has become more and more of a problem in recent times than it was in the past. According to statistics found in a survey conducted by the Free Press, 58% of high school students let someone copy their work in 1969, but by 1989 this number had risen to 97%. The expansion of the World Wide Web and the number of people accessing the Web on a regular basis has caused an epidemic of plagiarism in this country, especially among students. This is a serious problem that must be addressed because many students feel that if they are not getting in trouble for cheating, than it is okay.
I was sanctioned for plagiarism in the final paper of the Regulatory Affairs course RA783. The plagiarism included using quotation and outside sources without citation and using a section of the previously completed assignment from a different class. Although without the intention of plagiarizing to complete the final paper, I hold 100% responsibility for breaking the student code of conduct at SDSU and for ignoring the rules on plagiarism. I could have prevented the violation by being disciplined to follow the rules, which would have helped me change my actions. I could also have prevented plagiarism by not harboring any attitude of getting lucky by hoping my actions would go undetected by the instructor because I will be caught. Lastly, I should have been completely honest and strive to write new content for each assignment regardless of the circumstances because plagiarism is the most serious violation.
The better educated you are, the better off you are socially, and economically. Having a degree is, in general, a good indicator of your level of education. To get it some students study very hard. Others, on the contrary, prefer to take some shortcuts that seem to be easier for them. Those, not so much interested in acquiring a solid education, simply want to plagiarize to pass their classes, to get that degree. Plagiarism spreads out through any level of our education system. It even extends beyond that limit to reach almost any aspect of our society. This paper will discuss the different types of plagiarism. Before getting deeper into that discussion, we will start by explaining the word plagiarism.
Plagiarism is a very serious issue because it can affect the learning of many students. For example teachers and principals in an academic institute are very strict towards this matter so, it can lead to many consequences such as suspension, failure or even the risk of being expelled from a school and possibly even a school board. To avoid these consequences it is important to avoid plagiarizing, which can be a very hard thing to do for people who consistently rely on someone else’s work. Gasman also mentions the importance of plagiarism free work. The internet facilitates such behaviors because of the vast content offered, but students must be aware that there are severe consequences to plagiarism, such as being permanent expelled from the university with a permanent record of plagiarism. Plagiarism can have a permanent effect not only in a collegiate environment but also severe consequences when getting a job. Many employers have access to background information, and they are likely not to hire those who plagiarized because they do not want the image of their business to be ruined or even face a lawsuit because of plagiarized work. The last thing a student can do to avoid plagiarism is to check over their paraphrasing and quoting to make sure that they haven’t missed anything that may make their paper violate the plagiarism rule. Always cite sources used to gather information and sources used to incorporate graphs, tables, and etc. into the paper.
Plagiarism is a serious offense and a growing trend in our society today. Some may associate plagiarism with the idea of taking someone else’s writing and making it their own. In fact plagiarism involves anything that is copied or taken and said to be of your own work. Dictionary.com defines plagiarism as “the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work, as by not crediting the author”. In fact this definition covers all types of cheating and misrepresentation of ones own work. There are many numbers and statistics that can be found on the amount of individuals that have admitted to cheating. Perhaps the most astounding number is one that was reported by Moeck in 2002 aloft of 40% of higher education students commit academic dishonesty. This number I’m sure has grown since this report and will continue to grow with the development of the Internet. There are a number of ideas and strategies that can be employed in order to stop this ever-growing phenomenon. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.

It revolves around society’s ideas of intellectual and private property. It is considered to be a form of cheating. Often times in elementary schools and high schools, plagiarism is discussed as bad but is not actually prevented. Teachers often do not detect plagiarism and even when they do, sometimes it is ignored.
