Days were long and hard after his father’s death in The Great Depression; his brother practically raised him in a tiny house in the near outside of Portland. Engelbart roamed through woods and read quite a lot with his brother. His mother, Karen O’Leary was very depressed after being widowed and inspired Douglas to do anything he could get his hands to. Carter then went on to attend Berea College in Kentucky. In 1900 Carter returned to Douglas High School to become a teacher and eventually became a principal. Carter served as the principal up until 1903. Ambrose Bierce was born in a farm (in Horse Cave Creek), in Meigs County, Ohio and grew up in Kosciusko County, Indiana. In 1859, Bierce joins the Military School of Kentucky, where his stay was cut short prematurely because of an accident, supposedly intentional that ended up by setting fire to the establishment. At the beginning of the American Civil War, on April 19, 1861, Bierce enlisted in the 9th Regiment volunteer infantry of Indiana, then he earned the promotion to captain. But he still wanted to be a military pilot so he contacted the only black serving in the congress and he got him a spot at West Point in New York. But at the school he faced challenges no one in at the school would talk to him, sit with him and eat, and no one was his roommate. But he graduated 35th in his class of 278. After that he got second lieutenant he became one of only 2 every black officers in the army the other one being his father.

One story that many of his fans do not know about is that him and 9 other boy scouts were to receive an award from then President Theodore Roosevelt for selling so many U.S. Bonds. He was the last boy in line to receive a medal but the President only had 9 medals to give out. His father came from a long line of Southern military-loyal men, tracing back to British Norfolk. His mother’s family were wealthy Marylanders, accustomed to an easy lifestyle. His father Upton B. Sinclair, poor as he was, looked for a way to make a living. Given the time period during whence cotton, tobacco, and alcohol secured a foundation in the South, his father started a business as a wholesale liquor salesman. His father’s business moved him to Baltimore, where he met Priscilla Harden, who would become his wife. The couple had very little money, causing strains on the marriage. His father sought an escape in the thing that failed him – alcohol. Sinclair’s mother abhorred liquor, and would not even drink tea or coffee, seeing anything of the like as sinful. Priscilla Sinclair’s religious background heavily influenced her standard for her son, and Sinclair adopted many Protestant beliefs. Frequently, she would send him to her family’s home in hopes of removing him from his father’s drunken stupor. Her family too helped in molding young Sinclair, especially by instilling a love of education and of wealth. Soon, Sinclair began to realize the vast differences in the social classes of his own family and his mother’s.
