Once Kathleen was out of jail, she reclaimed her son and moved to Indianapolis. such a young age. During Manson’s childhood, he was neglected. Manson was sent from town to town trying to find someone or something that could suppress the bad behaviors of the young boy. Manson began to resent his mother because she had tried to put him into a foster home and never put him as her top priority. At the age of fourteen, Charlie Manson had already rented his own room and began to live on his own. In order to support himself, he began work very odd jobs and steal. After everything his mom had put him through, she turned him into the city's juvenile center (Roberts 30). While being sent from town to town, Manson lasted a total of three days in Boys Town until he ran away with an accomplice, Blackie Nielson. The two ended up robbing a store and getting arrested in Peoria, Illinois. Once sent back to Indianapolis, he attended the Indiana Boys School and ran away eighteen times before he was arrested in Utah. From Utah, he was sent to the National Training School for Boys in Washington, D.C. and then served jail time (Roberts 30). After being released from jail, Manson met the ‘love of his life’ or so he thought.
He married a local girl named Rosaline Jean Willis, in West Virginia, after only a few months of knowing each other. She soon became pregnant with their son and Manson then fell back into stealing cars. He had been sent back to jail in Los Angeles before the baby had been born and missed the birth. In order to be closer to her husband, Rosaline moved to California (Roberts 30). Manson’s mother heard news of a grandson, Charles M. Manson Jr, and immediately moved close to Rosaline to help take care of the child. Once released in August of 1958, his mother and his wife were nowhere to be found. While in California, Manson got arrested for many accounts of car theft and pimping. Manson was convicted of forging government checks and served a ten year sentence in 1960 (Roberts 30). After being released, Manson traveled around San Francisco panhandling in the streets, singing his music, and attracting a plethora of runaways during the center of the ‘Summer of Love’. Many times in his life, Manson stated the fact that he could be more famous and bigger than the Beatles if he was given the chance. Surprisingly, Charles Manson was obsessed with the Beatles. (Brewer). After Rosaline disappeared from the picture, he married a woman named Leona Rae "Candy" Stevens. Leona became pregnant and completely disappeared. Their child, Charles Luther Manson, is often reported as "allegedly" existing due to Leona’s successful disappearance (Paradise). After two wives disappeared, Manson began to have sex with multiple women at the same time. He is said to have so many kids that he really did not know exactly how many and who they even are. Manson the leader of a cult called The Family. The Family was a group of people that were astounded by the admiration that Manson gave them. Many of “The Family” members became pregnant from Charles Manson. The women in the cult were very much in love with him. The girls said he has a majestic and magical voice. They loved Manson because of how good he made them feel. He made them feel like they were worth something and could accomplish so much; something they had never felt before in their normal lives (Roberts 31). The Family was a huge group of Charles Manson followers.
They thought Manson was a God and would do anything he wanted. Manson tried to remove all the things he did not like about the conventional society they lived in, also known as “hang-ups”. Charles Manson was a strong believer in the race war that was beginning. “He prophesied that a race war would erupt destroying all major cities and decimating the white population, and that he would rise up from the desert to rule over the remains of the human race” (Brewer). Manson believed there were many Beatles song that were made as a warning sign and a war call for all
people. The cult members were also frequent users of LSD, whenever they could get it and would play childish games. The games would include people acting as cowboys and cowgirls while on the ranch. The people in The Family were lonely and insecure people who needed a father figure in their life. The members did not have very much of an ego to begin with. The way he took full control of the people was by stripping down their ego and replacing it with himself. A member of the cult, Susan Adkins, said “I never questioned what Charlie said. I just did it.” (Roberts 31). A major hang-up to involve most girls was sex. Manson was very persuasive and brutal when he needed to be. The women that joined the family quickly accepted the idea of having sex with him and any other member of the cult, on demand (Roberts 31). Along with many other things, Manson preached about how women needed to be totally submissive to men. The women in the family were always thought of as Manson’s property. The women were offered to visitors that could potentially help Manson. “[Manson] could be any role you wanted him to- a father, a lover, a little boy, anything” said Sandy Good.

As typical human beings we all want to know why someone could randomly take the lives of several innocent people all at one time. It is frightening and scientists figure if they can figure out why, then it can be prevented in the future. The documentary, Mind of a Rampage Killer, tries to solve the mystery and really dive deep into the minds of people who could potentially create such a horrifying situation. Through the use of ethos, logos, and pathos, this documentary concludes that every killer had something in common; they all struggled with mental disorders, depression, or outbursts of violence, all stemming from early childhood or an internal battle throughout growing up, some could have even just been born with a violent rage.
