“Shiver” is the first book of the Trilogy, “The Wolves of Mercy Falls”, written by Maggie Stiefvater. The trilogy explains the growth of Grace Brisbane’s and Sam Roth’s passionate relationship. The storyline begins, with 11 year old Grace, who is being attacked by wolves. On the brink of death, she is rescued by a comforting wolf who has unusual yellow eyes. From that day forward, she patiently waits for the comforting wolf to emerge again from the woods behind her home. Several years later, Grace is still waiting to see her wolf again. By now, the townspeople have gotten fed up with the appearance of wolves in their small town. As a result of the wolf activity, the community immediately decides to hold a hunt. Grace dramatically stops the hunt by falsely stating that her friend is out in the woods in hopes of saving her wolf from death. She succeeds, but when she arrives home, she finds a wolf injured on her back porch. As she approaches the wolf, she realizes that it is the same wolf that she has been searching for ever since it saved her from death when she was 11 years old. She instantly attempts to help the injured wolf, but as she does the wolf undergoes a change and is now Sam, a human. society there is in Mercy Falls. As the story continues, we learn more about Sam’s insane life.
The things we learn about Sam and the wolves, is that they don’t always stay human or always stay wolf. During the winter, this small handful of what you would think are just ordinary people, shift into wolves due to the cold weather. On the other hand, when it gets around summer time, and the weather starts heating up, the wolves shift back into humans and repeat this cycle as years pass on. However, over the years of shifting back and forth, their time slowly decreases for them to remain human. Eventually, a person who shifts back and forth from wolf to human will permanently become a
wolf. The story proceeds, and so does Grace and Sam’s love for eachother, but as the weather starts to cool, they face an ongoing fear of being separated again. Sam constantly feels as if he could shift at anytime, and almost has multiple times throughout the story. All of a sudden, Sam and Grace’s fear becomes reality, Sam shifts back into a wolf. Anxious and baffled, Grace watches as her wolf escape to the forest unknowing of what she will do next. Overall the storyline continues of Grace and Sam’s love and struggle, which leads to the second book of the trilogy.

The wolf girls struggle to reconcile this new way of life with the way they were raised and push back against this forced assimilation. While this story is fantasy based it can be interpreted as historical criticism in regards to the wars between European settlers and American Indians. Aliken to the wolves, Native Americans have a unique culture that is carefully intertwined with nature. In the late 19th and 20th centuries Native American children were forcibly taken from their homes and forced to assimilate to a white American world within Catholic schools. “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” is symbolic with the assimilation of the werewolf girls into human culture of how Catholic boarding schools and the American Government forced

It is often said that a dog is a man’s best friend. In Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Crossing, a deep affection and fondness are established between man and animal. In a particular excerpt from the novel, Cormac illustrates the protagonist’s sorrow that was prompted from the wolf’s tragic death. As blood stiffens his trousers, the main character seeks to overcome the cold weather and fatigue with hopes of finding the perfect burial site for the wolf. McCarthy uses detailed descriptions and terminology in his novel, The Crossing, to convey the impact of the wolf’s death on the protagonist, a sad experience incorporated with religious allusions and made unique by the main character’s point of view.

How would you feel if everyone around you is slowly dying off with no way to stop anyone from dying? That’s what everyone has to deal with in Fever 1793, a book by Laurie Halse Anderson, which teaches a lesson about following your heart and always to never give up. In my opinion, this was a really good novel; because it was both informative and suspenseful while letting the reader get a 1st person “view” of the yellow fever infected Philadelphia. The story focuses on the main character Mattie, who is stunned at the shocking number of fatalities. When her mother falls ill, too, she finally realizes that she must seek refuge in another place. Here, the troubles just keep on piling up in one catastrophe after another, until she has no choice but to head back to Philadelphia…. Read the rest of the story to find out what happens to Mattie!
Authors can communicate through their words to make people feel certain emotions. In the book, The Pearl Harbor Diary of Amber Billows by Barry Denenberg taught me a lot about what really happened during Pearl Harbor. The facts that Barry Denenberg taught me about Pearl Harbor were accurate, you can tell he truly did his research before writing his historical fiction book.
A young, red-hooded girl walked through the woods all alone. All of a sudden the Wolf popped out of nowhere. What was Little Red to do? Was she to trust the Wolf? That has been the conflicting turmoil in both of Red’s stories. As a gullible young girl in Charles Perrault’s “Little Red Riding Hood,” Red blindly believed the Wolf. “I am going to see my grandmother,” Red told the Wolf (Griffith and Frey 10). That naïve nature caused Red to seem young and clueless. Negative consequences arose form Red’s cluelessness, causing Red and her Granny to get hurt. The lesson learned from Little Red in that story was not to trust strangers. Throughout “Hoodwinked, Red took on a different attitude about her situation. Red took action and assaulted the Wolf when he approached her. She found the Wolf to be untrustworthy and was qu...

The environment it was placed into was one of the causes for change, and another was the role it played for humans.
