For the YouTube analysis paper, a clip from a show called Shipping Wars that aired on the channel A&E will be discussed. Shipping Wars consists of independent contractors who make their living on bidding, moving and hauling oddly-shaped and oversized loads for customers via a website called U-Ship.
U-Ship is a huge site that has access to over 800,000 contractors that can provide instant quotes for whatever shipping desires one may have. Customers can go online and post the items they need moved. When they post their items, they post details such as; where the item is, where it needs to go, what the item is, and most importantly the deadline that the contractor would have to meet. In return, the contractors bid against one another competing

The middle man in logistics is often called a freight broker, freight brokers are notoriously known to independent drivers as being greedy by taking a larger proportion from the drivers potential income, as well as being knowledgeable about the actual load details like deliver time frames and even as silly as it may seem, the location. U-Ship is highly beneficial to most that use it due to the fact that, often those involved are just the driver and the actual client. There are no major corporations, no freight brokers and most importantly no fuel surcharges, no minimum pay loads, no demerge time and no dispatching office that a customer may have to tolerate in order to get their items …show more content…
Issues such as; full disclosure of the actual details, incorrect dimensions provided by the customer, a change in the deadline, discrepancy with the agreed upon pricing. Contractors advertise their companies by using their equipment such as, trucks and trailers that they use to make deliveries. By making these deliveries those who just so happen to be in the area can see, so a general audience is their primary function. The contractors can team up together to deliver a load and meet a time line like the instance displayed in the clip with this particular episode. Their cost of production can often be split in instances where a load is split by carriers so; building a personal network with those who they hold a common ground with can prove beneficial. As you can see in the clip, not every experience is a pleasant one for the customer or the contractor. Many contractors have years of experience in this field while, some contractors do not, this can prove costly when mistakes are made and those mistakes can carry over to whoever they contractor had decided to team up with. For many of the contractors listed on U-Ship, their reviews are what will drive future clients to book their services. A lot of the time the contractors will set up personal pages, telling their clients about them and the services they provide. Many contractors take pride in the jobs they do some
Based on the textbook and my understanding, whenever there are negotiations between a procurer and a supplier regarding a competitive bidding, the first thing that might be favored is the scope of the project, meaning both will sit down and discuss the entire project prior the work begins. Meanwhile, during the negotiations, evaluation criteria should be clear, and stated and defined. As the evaluation is based on the criteria stated and the procurer can request or ask the supplier’s opinions on certain specifications and where things can be improved.
Furthermore, this was kind of funny, because as a kid I was amazed at how Amazon ships customers’ packages in the fastest and the most cost-effective way. As a kid, I remember asking my parents “How does Amazon do this?” and I remember them saying that I will need to major in a topic that will help me understand this process. Every time I ordered an item from them, I would think about the process of obtaining the packages using robots, packing the items safely, and then shipping them off to customers. This is an example of logistics and efficiency at its finest. As a junior, I still do not understand this process fully, since I am currently taking IDIS 240. But, by the time I graduate, I hope to fully understand this process.
In the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, continuing through Madison’s term, the United States initiated a policy to retaliate against the seizure of ships by the British and French. These three dominant nations entered a period between 1806-1810, known as Commercial Warfare. The Commercial War was a response by Americans to maintain their right of neutral commerce. The Acts by the United States, the Decrees by the powerful Napoleon I, and the Parliamentary orders, throughout the period of Commercial Warfare directly led to the start of the War of 1812, and helped build the commercial future of the United States.
Socialist John Reed was against the United States of America to be involved in the treacherous World War I. In “The Trader’s War,” Reed comments on Hitler’s condescending ideals of wanting to create an even bigger capitalist country. However, as Reed dislikes what is going on with Germany, he also opposes of the U.S in taking part of the war. America’s reasons of taking part of the war was to fight for democracy with the French. “More nauseating than the crack-brained bombast of the Kaiser is the editorial chorus in America which pretends to believe—would have us believe—that the White and Spotless Knight of Modern Democracy is marching against the Unspeakably Vile Monster of Medieval Militarism,” (pg 76). In this passage, Reed is also commentating
The Competitive Forces are: The biggest competitor is Fed Ex, and they cannot compare. UPS did 2.5 times the volume through its sophisticated delivery machine.
As the United States economy struggles through a sluggish time with the stock market dropping and unemployment rising, being competitive in the job market has become extremely important among professionals. Engineers are no exception. For most engineering firms, being competitive and successful requires obtaining design projects offered by companies in other fields. These projects can range from designing heating and ventilation systems for office buildings to water systems for cities to computer networks for businesses—the list of possibilities and disciplines is extensive. To get these jobs, engineers must make a bid proposal for the project. Bidding involves estimating the entire cost of the project, including the designing and building processes, as well as the materials and labor. Usually, the company with the lowest bid and the best plan gets the job. The ethical issue in this process is determining the cheapest building materials and construction procedures possible without compromising public safety.

The Unreliable Narrator “Reliably” Depicting Trauma: A Comparative Analysis of Jungian Psychology and the Unreliable Narrator in Contemporary Short Fiction. Contemporary writers of short fiction depict trauma in a way that allows the reader to fully invest in a narrative with a more concise and intentional story arc surrounding the conceptualization of trauma. This is often depicted in short fiction as close up snapshots of difficult moments in a person's life, mainly through abuse, death, and neglect. Within these stories, the unreliable narrator is an imperative tool that demonstrates the complexities of the human psyche in distress. Through a close reading and analysis of Irvine Welsh’s “Catholic Guilt”, Helen Simpson’s “Every Third Thought”, and RZ Baschir’s “The Chicken”, scrutinized under both a cultural

The Intermodal Shipping Container is a large steel box that was created to transport goods by train, truck, or ship for around the last 50 years. The pioneer of this revolutionizing box goes is a man by the name of Malcom McLean who began his transportation interest with his trucking company (McLean Trucking) that he built into one of the nation’s largest. From there, he developed the steel container in 1956, which replaced the previous loading and unloading method known as the “Break Bulk Method.” The Break Bulk Method was a much less efficient method where all goods are loaded individually using bags, boxes, drums, crates, or barrels instead of unified large containers. This method definitely being much more time consuming and risky with respect to increased theft or damage.

Award-winning branding consultant Simon Mainwaring once said, “More and more companies are reaching out to their suppliers and contractors to work jointly on issues of sustainability, environmental responsibility, ethics, and compliance.” While several people think private military contracting is a low standard job, others disagree. Private military contracting is a job involving being handy in combat. Many people may ask how a private military contractor is different from a regular soldier. Several people choose private military contracting over the military because it is more convenient for individuals and provides a satisfying salary.
Sea freight is more efficient and less damaging to the environment for moving a heavy load, based on emissions per ton of weight, than air freight. Expensive and relatively light items may justify using air freight to transport them, especially when the delivery time is short and distances traveled are large. Reducing the lead time, which is 4 to 8 weeks for sea freight, reduces inventory costs in a supply chain. It also shortens the time needed to introduce a new or upgraded product. As an example, in the case of a quality problem in a new product, an organization has limited choices such as recall, rework, sell at a discount, or scrap the existing inventory, all of which represent financial losses to the organization. Using air freight and
..., 2013). As these contractors are risk-averse, they will drop out in the first phase leaving only the most efficient contractors to compete against each other. Furthermore the inclusion of a premium, offers less incentive for collusion as contractors are more inclined to deviate from a cartel to receive a higher payoff. Although theoretically feasible in a controlled environment, in real life there are laws and regulations that protect firms against collusive practices. In the case where the client may suspect collusion is a real possibility, AMSA offers the most effective collusion deterrence. However administratively it may be difficult to implement phase 1, where the price sequentially drops as the tender process takes several months with contractors rarely interacting with each other compared to an auction where the bidders are together and bid in one sitting.
