“In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, by Richard Connell, a man named Sanger Rainsford goes on a trip, head for the Amazon. He later then jumped off the boat because he saw a large island that is said to be a mystery. He meets a man, known as General Zaroff. He later explains a game that Rainsford does not like, but he decides to play the game. Rainsford use his cleverness to defeat Zaroff and wins the game. Rainsford talks to Whitney about a large island that is know to be a mystery. It is called “Ship-Trap Island.” They are both on yacht on the way to the Amazon. “Off to the right, somewhere is a large island”. (Page 13) Rainsford then wakes up and hears 3 gunshots coming from somewhere. He climbed onto a rail trying to figure out where it was coming from. He later lost balance and fell of the boat and he tried to cry out but he was hit by the water. “He lunged for it; a short, hoarse cry came from his lips as he realized he had reached to far and had lost balance”. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. Rainsford is a hunter. He was on a yacht that crashed and he was the only survivor. The island that he swam to was named “Ship Trap Island.” This where General Zaroff lived. He is also a hunter. He has hunted anything you can think of. Even… people. He has the survivors from the ship wrecks “play” his “game.” The survivors go out into the jungle and General Zaroff goes out and finds them. They have three days to survive. If they don’t get caught in those three days, they win. If they lose… they are killed. This happened to Rainsford. Rainsford, thankfully, won the “game.” He shot General Zaroff after his win.
There are many similarities and differences between the story “The Most Dangerous Game” and the episode of Gilligan's Island that we watched. Some similarities include: someone is being hunted, the setting is similar, and both victims get away in the end. In Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford, an avid hunter, is lost at sea, stranded on “Ship-Trap” Island-every sailor’s worst nightmare. Rainsford goes through a series of events that prove to be life-altering. Even though Sanger Rainsford went through many trials and tribulations, he never lost his intelligence, composure, or his bravery.

He becomes the next general of the island because he has a similar outlook on life as General Zaroff , and he has changed from not wanting to hunt humans to wanting to hunt humans.

To begin with, the setting for “The Most Dangerous Game” is very fitting. The author, Richard Connell, picked the best place to set the story. Reason being, the mansion is on a large island that is feared by everyone. Also the mansion, on the outside at least, looks scary. Since it was dark out and there were cliffs surrounding the house, there was a scary shadow that was cast down. While on the yacht, Sanger Rainsford, the main character or protagonist, came across this island and asked for the name. His friend Whitney replied, “The old charts call it ‘Ship Trap Island’,” (Connell). Ship Trap Island is the name of the island. It doesn’t sound like a happy place to be but it is the dark and violent thoughts and feelings that come with the title, which perfectly fits the theme of the story.
