A man, once curious, thought highly of and condoning cold blooded murder. Has no found a new love of killing people. A murderer, loving to see people in pain from the suffering of dying or getting injured, creating a hole with sharps stakes for people to fall into, and feeding a powerful person to hounds. He is no more obsessed with hunting animals, but hunting humans. This man is now the general of Ship Trap Island. Rainsford becomes the next general of Ship Trap Island. He becomes the next general of the island because he has a similar outlook on life as General Zaroff , and he has changed from not wanting to hunt humans to wanting to hunt humans. “ Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure. I am strong. Why should I not use my fist? If I wish to hunt, why should I not? I hunt the scum of the earth---sailors from tramp ships--lascars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels--a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than a score of them.” “He shinned excitedly up a tree and looked back. His pursuers had stopped. But the hope that was in Rainsford’s brain when he climbed died, for he saw that General Zaroff was still on his feet.”(Connell, pg 30 & 39 ). Here we see the views of both General Zaroff and Rainsford. In the first quote we can infer that General Zaroff does not care about what he hunts just like Rainsford. That can be inferred because he says life is for the strong and the weak of the world are here to give the strong pleasure, he is basically saying that he is strong and he is on earth to hunt the weak because nobody cares about them. We can also infer that he does not care about anything else because he says he hunts the scum of the world. He means that he hunts minorities because they mean nothing to society. In the second quote we can see that Rainsford really loves hurting people just like
A human being develops and grows throughout their life through many challenges and sometimes it takes an event in one’s life to change a person. In the novel “The Caine Mutiny” by Herman Wouk, is a novel about Willie Keith, a chubby and well educated son from an upper class family who joins the Navy. Willie goes into the Columbia University School of Journalism, which has been converted for the war effort. He is almost rejected because of his physical reasons of not being fit, but his Princeton background saves him from being rejected. As soon as he stepped in this navy life and went through a long journey with the navy crew , Willie became more independent, responsible and courageous.
Ship-Trap Island is a long dreaded place. Rainsford is a hunter that falls off his boat into a rocky sea wakes up in late day on the shore of Ship-Trap island. On the island, is an immense jungle and a Death Swamp. Night was trying to see “through a blanket”. The sea broke upon the rocky shore. On the island there was an enormous building on a high bluff. General Zaroff welcomed Rainsford but later threw him out into the vast jungle to be hunted. Rainsford travelled around the island fighting for his life. Around the jungle and swamp, Rainsford set three traps for General Zaroff. One was called the Malay Mancatcher. He balanced a dead tree on a living tree. One the trigger was set off; the dead tree fell on the shoulder of the general. The second one was the Burmese Tiger Pit. He dug a large hole and filled it with stakes, then covered the hole with grass. One of the dogs died in the pit. His final trap was one he learned in Uganda. He tied a knife to the end of a young tree and tied it back with a plant. The knife killed Ivan. After he finished his final trap, Rainsford ran to the edge of the cliffs and jumped off into the rocky ocean. Later Rainsford appeared in General Zaroff’s bedroom in the mansion and ended up killing him, and Rainsford slept in his large, comfortable bed.
He was caught by a malicious man who hunted men for pleasure. Rainsford was quite good with handling it though. Although there was a lot of stress and pressure being put on him he did some quick thinking and set up traps around the island, like a Burmese tiger pit, to capture the malicious man. He had determination to stay alive and get off the eerie and horrid island so he could see civilization again, that was his
In the game, General Zaroff arms everyone on that crew with a knife and a pack of food and each and gives them a three-hour head start. When three hours has passed, General Zaroff hunts them down with a pistol of the smallest bullet size and range, and if someone who is being hunted stays alive for three days, they win. If a person who is supposed to be hunted refuses to play, they are whipped. If they are close to winning, General Zaroff brings out his pack of vicious and ruthless dogs, and because of the general’s unfair method of this cruel game, he has not lost one game after playing this for countless years. When General Zaroff explains to Rainsford that he will hunt again the next day and he wants Rainsford to hunt alongside him, Rainsford cannot bring himself to participate. Since Rainsford is not hunting, he ends up being hunted, and he wins. This short story applies to the first interpretation of “Character is what you are in the
TMDG is a gothic tale of a famous hunter, who had an accident at sea, named Rainsford. He swims his way to the shores of an island that is populated by another hunter, by the name of Zaroff, and his henchmen, Ivan. Rainsford is greeted with five star hotel hospitality until Zaroff brags
In Sandra Benitez’s novel, A Place Where the Sea Remembers, we get to know the lives and struggles of the residents of a small town in Mexico. Each character faces a conflict that affects the course of his or her life. The conflict I chose was the conflict that Marta was with her child and how her anger about the child made her do things she wished she could take back. It all starts with Marta and her sister. Marta is pregnant and thinks she can't take care of the kid so she wants an abortion. Then once Choyo Marta’s sister husband found out he insisted to take the kid once he is born. So then Marta decided to take care of the baby until it was born but then after time went by the husband of Choyo said that he wouldn't be able to take the kid because he was already going to have a child with Choyo. Once Marta was told this she let her anger get the best of her which then lead her to
Literary villains are all around us. For instance, Voldemort from Harry Potter and Darth Vader from Star Wars. What makes a villain? They will go through anyone or damage anything to reach their goal. No matter how small or how tall they are, anyone can be a villain. One of the worst literary villains is Erik Fisher from Tangerine, written by Edward Bloor. He is a liar and a thief. Those traits are what makes the best villains. Throughout the book, Erik shows that he is a villain through his vile and offensive behavior, his need for power, and his insanity.
When world renowned hunter, Sanger Rainsford ends up marooned on an island, he finds himself in an unimaginable word. A world full of murder. He must find a way to save himself and the ones around him. Rainsford is the lesser of two evils he may have a passion for hunting but unlike General Zaroff he has limits, Rainsford kills Zaroff to save himself and many future victims.
Some people you meet can have a major impact on your life and change it for better or for worse. Rainsfords (a man who likes to hunt dangerous animals) life was greatly changed in both a good way and a bad way by a man who lives on a tiny island in a big house named General Zaroff. Rainsford ended up on this island after he fell of a yacht he was on to go hunt an animal somewhere else but ended up swimming his way up to the shore of an island. But after about a day of being on the island Rainsford was being hunted down. While Rainsford was trying his hardest to survive on the island he was on he found a way to escape to the mainland where General Zaroff was to try and get a way off the island back to civilization. The points in this story will be somehow related to my thesis statement in ¨The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Zaroff teaches Rainsford how it feels to be like the hunted and not the hunter.
We are introduced to the protagonist and main character, Sanger Rainsford who is a big game hunter and a WW1 veteran. The story starts off with a conversation between Whitney and Rainsford discussing the island, so we can understand the reputation it holds.
When Rainsford falls off of the boat, he has to try his best to stay afloat until he can find something to latch on to. He swims vigorously until he reaches Ship-Trap Island. "Jagged crags appeared to jut up into the opaqueness... dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliffs." It is midday and he is just searching for a place to rest when he runs into Ivan, the astonishingly large guard of the island. Zaroff, the owner of the island, joins in on their conversation about hunting. The conversation is interesting to say the least. Zaroff says, "You'll find this game worth playing…your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" Zaroff is trying to point out that he finds interest in hunting humans, and he wants to know if Rainsford will rise to the challenge. Rainsford is left with a choice to make; will he fight Zaroff, or will he decline and get killed by Ivan. The choice in this situation is pretty self- evident.
There is a lot of suspense in this story and some foreshadowing that leads to it.The first thing we read is that Sanger Rainsford yacht is near an island called Ship Trap Island. We are told that sailors are very afraid of the place. A second bit of foreshadowing comes a bit later when Rainsford talks about hunting. He says that no one cares how the hunted animal feels. This foreshadows the fact that he will become a hunted animal himself.
The novel, Shelter by Harlan Coben is a book regarding a boy discovering a mystery that was hidden from him. The protagonist of this book is a teenager named Mickey Bolitare. Mickey witnesses his father’s death so he is now living with his uncle Myron. His life falls apart, but then he encounters Ashley. Ashley is a new student in school like him, and he soon forms feelings for her. Ashley was the reason why his life was bearable; until she disappears without a trace. He would not take the chance of letting anyone else leave him because he's lost too much already. On his search for Ashley he meets the Bat Lady ( a old elder woman who everyone fears) who tells him his father is in fact still alive. Mickey refused to believe this because he witnessed his father die in a car crash they had. This information influenced him to break into her house and he discovers a symbol that remains symbolic throughout the novel. The symbol was a butterfly which connects to his missing friend Ashley and his
Rainsford shows that he is a dynamic character because he sees hunting in a completely different view. Rainsford is the main character in “The Most Dangerous Game”. In the beginning of the story he’s on a ship with his friend, Whitney, and they’re going on a trip to hunt jaguars. After that Rainsford flew off the ship and swam to an island called Ship-Trap. He met this man who owned the island and his name was, General Zarroff. The general made a deal with Rainsford. The General was hunting Rainsford because he was tired of hunting animals and wanted a more challenging task. When Rainsford is hiding it says, “Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there,
As Zaroff goes out searching for Rainsford, Rainsford is very frightened because he does not want to die. So he uses some skills that he knows about trapping animals which in this case the animal is Zaroff, but before that he goes on top of the tree. “Rainsford’s impulse was to hurl himself down like a panther, but he saw that the general’s right hand held something metallic-- a small automatic pistol”(11). As he saw the pistol he stayed hidden until the general went home for some rest. As the general went home Rainsford created this booby trap, which if general crossed it a huge log would hit him. When Zaroff came back from his rest, he trips the trap and gets hit in the arm and leaves to treat it. Therefore, a person might not be who they seem to
