Nascar…. When you think of moonshine you think of the hillbillies in overalls fireing up grand daddys still in the b ack forty. It may come to a shock to you when you learn that nascars the billion dollor enterprise with 100,000 cars that are engineered to be as fast as they can be. Its hard to belive it all started from shine runners. During the great depression millions of gallons of shine were in need of distribution. This is where the ridge runners came into play. The shiners needed a way to get there shine from the stills to the stash houses…. The cops at the time had stock cars and if you could out run them then you wre free. You can only get in trouble if you are caught in the act….. the backwoods shiners started to build cars that would out run the cops. This was the beginning of nascar….. Mike Devlin September 30, 2013 the shiners would soup of a car and use it to out run the cops. They ridge runners knew the back roads and mountain trails better then anyone. With the help of there cars and the knowledge of the labyrinth of roads the ridge runners began to out run the cops. This then started the bragging. Each ridge runner believed they were the fastest driver in the mountains. They began to have competions to see who was truly the fastest. One of the most famous drivers was a man by the name of Junior Johnson. He was a shiner who had been caught and had spent a year in prison. He got out of prison and went back into the fast money life sytle of running shine. In his prime he was considered the fastest man on the ridge. He later made his way to nascar in 1955 and went on to win over 50 races. He then retired in 1966. In 1933, Prohibition was repealed, however the shiners did not quit dtheir reckless ways, they contin... ... middle of paper ... ...days of moonshine wood was used to kindle a fire to heat up the still. This became a red flag for anyone looking for moonshiners. Its very hard to spot the smoke from a still in the dark of the night. Most people would think moonshine started after prohibition when there was a federal law against liquor …. the Americans still wanted a way to get there fix. Shiners were born… The making of moonshine is a process that has been used since before prohibiton, when there was a federal law against the making, selling, and transporting of alcoholic beverages. The Americans still needed a way to get there fix, so moonshiners were in need. More and more people began to make moonshine to earn some extra cash on the side. From outlaws to small business owners moonshine seemed to run deep in the south. They started in the backwoods of the south and began to make the shine.
