During the end of the seventeenth century and early eighteenth century a socio-political shift occurred. Sensibilities transferred from the logic of the Enlightenment, or Neo-classical Period, to those feelings and emotions of the Romantic Age.
During the Enlightenment authors such as Moliére & Swift used reason and rational to present their ideas. They address broad socio-political issues with their writings. Moliére in his satirical work, Tartuffe, focuses upon hypocrisy within the clergy. He uses Cléante to voice his argument of logic against Tartuffe throughout the play. Swift, in A Modest Proposal, uses shock therapy to motivate people into action with anger and wrath. Swift still uses the philosophy of the Enlightenment; his narrator provides sound, well-considered arguments and logic in sharing his proposal. And Swift, himself, provides us with an actual list of proposed solutions under disguise. Both authors attempted to bring about a change in society by reasoning with their audience.
When the Enlightenment ended and the Romantics took hold, logic gave way to emotions. The Romantic Poets relied upon their feelings and were driven by their passions. They were inspired by nature and by the imagination. They focused upon the uniqueness of the individual, not broad socio-political issues. Rousseau’s Confessions perfectly exemplifies the change in sensibilities. The piece focuses directly upon is unique, individual life. He relies completely on his feelings. His thoughts and longings center around his whims and fancy, not upon logic. He states that it is only objects for which he yearns which tempt and sometimes lead him to thievery. He would not consider stealing actual money, which he could use to purchase the desired items. He prefers to let the impetuous passion guide his actions. He makes tracks for Paris which he “had heard so much praised” without any money or means of support or even any real plan for such (674). Rousseau claims that he is unable to simply sit and write what comes to mind, the train of thought process. He states that his writings under such circumstances result in dense and verbose ramblings of which “[his] meaning is difficult to make out” (672). He finds it tough to organize his thoughts and opinions without adequate time to arrange his mind. Another prime example of Romantic ideals is William Woodsworth Lines Composed Above Tintern Abbey. Woodsworth delightfully captures for the reader the beloved place of his youth. Only with the reflection of age does he realize that the natural beauty lied within his imagination and the warmth of his memories.
Unlike previous centuries, the eighteenth century was the dawn of a new age in Western Europe where intellectuals thrived, science was honored, and curiosity was encouraged; and the framework of how civil society was changed as a whole. From the dawn of the Enlightenment Western European culture was changing due to the revolutionary new ideas that were changing. With the social change going on, political change was as ever evident as time went on. With these changes rooted in social change went out, the effects of the Enlightenment can be seen over 18th century Western Europe and beyond.

In Jonathan Swift’s satire, “A Modest Proposal”, Swift writes about the starving people of Ireland in the early 1700’s. He makes a wild and absurd proposal to help remedy the problems of overpopulation and poverty. Swift wants to make a political statement by using the “children” as satire to grasp the attention of the audience - the English people, the Irish politicians and the rich – and make them aware of the political, moral, and social problems. In “A Modest Proposal”, Swift’s arguments are presented effectively by using pathos (emotional appeal), ethos (ethics and values), and logos (logic reasoning and facts).
It was their greatest weapon against injustice, and this fact remains true today. A person’s tongue is sharper than any double-edged sword. It can start a war, just as easily as it can prevent one. With Jonathan Swift’s and Oliver Goldsmith’s similar ideas, they tried to portray the injustice and corruption of the upper classes through satire poetry. Their desire in life was to ease their own poverty and to instruct and please the reading public through their literary masterpieces. Through the creation of a pompous, highly educated and sophisticated proposer, in Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal, the targeted audience, the absentee landlords and parliament of England, and the reader naturally identify with the proposer. The proposer’s rigorous logic, serious and cynical tone deduces the ghastly proposition of cannibalism for economic, political, moral, and nationalistic gain. However, through the targeted audience’s identification with the proposer, Swift is able to propose the ironic humanity of his satirical proposal and thus indict colonial landlordism in Ireland and in Enlightenment ideals. Swift’s proposer’s tone is used for both the ostensible and actual purpose of the proposal; through the adherence to the ideals of the Enlightenment, which would be that of the targeted audience, Swift is able to critique the ideology of logic and rationality as fundamental to morality in the proposal.

This thematic choice is what partially fuels Rousseau’s decision to deploy the sentimental novel form. Rousseau places sentiment as the “guide” of man (JOTHN 262) and the characters in this novel use the sentimental language to proclaim their virtuousness and bolster their ideas about the relationship between society and human beings, particularly when the matter of St. Preux being socially unacceptable as Julie’s suitor is discussed in the novel. The epistolary format works well to showcase this because the language of intimacy and emotion which is what Rousseau uses to gain empathy from the reader which in turn will make the latter more amenable to the radical ideas deployed in the text, such as Lord Edward Bomston’s decrying of nobility when he urges Julie’s father, Baron L’Etrange to accept St. Preux, a bourgeoisie intellectual as his son-in-law (JOTNH 139). Thus Rousseau defends his writing to his publisher in the second preface, by telling him that a love letter “from a truly passionate Lover, will be desultory, diffuse, full of verbose, disconnected, repetitious passages…The strength of the sentiment may not strike us, but its truth affects us, and that is how one heart can speak to another” (JOTHN

In some satires, as in Swift’s own A Modest Proposal, the use of absurd, blatant exaggeration is intended to capture an indolent audience’s attention regarding the social state of the poor. Yet even in such a direct satire, there exists another layer of meaning. In regards to A Modest Proposal, the interchange between the voice of the proposer and Swift’s voice introduces another medium of criticism, as well as the opportunity for readers to reflect on how well they may fit the proposer’s persona. In such as case, the satire exists on multiple levels of meaning—not only offering conclusions about moral problems, but also allowing the audience to an interpretation of their place among the criticism.
Rousseau’s Confessions are a recounting of past events in his life, and throughout, Rousseau attempts to resent his “unique” personality. In this attempt, he includes numerous descriptions of people and things that he has an affection for. It is through the vivid descriptions of his affections, Rousseau reveals his affections are the driving force in the creation of his identity. Discerning one’s loves as the driver of personality allows Rousseau to paint a clearer picture of his true self; as, this system based on affections allows him to replace vague concrete language and descriptors with actions of a person that readers are able to draw broader conclusions from.
